vWell they didn’t have any motivation against the Bears last week either, and yet took it to them. I just think that team is a reflection of Shanahan and they like to compete. A spoiler victory preventing the Rams from sweeping the division would probably feel good I suppose.

The 49ers will be without two of their most promising young offensive players when they close the season against the Los Angeles Rams on Sunday.
Running back Matt Breida (ankle sprain) and rookie receiver Dante Pettis (knee sprain) won’t see the field again until 2019, coach Kyle Shanahan said Monday.
The news came as no surprise after the two left Sunday’s loss to the Chicago Bears in the second quarter. Breida has dealt with his injury since September.
Pettis sustained a knee injury on a punt return against the Chargers in Week 4, which slowed his rookie campaign until becoming the team’s most productive receiver over the past month. Shanahan said Pettis sprained his MCL.
Breida will finish his second NFL season with 814 rushing yards while averaging 5.3 yards per carry, fifth among qualified rushers.
“Matt’s had a very impressive season,” Shanahan said of Breida, noting he “started out great” after starter Jerick McKinnon sustained a torn ACL a week before the opener. “And I think Matt stepped in right away and played like a number one back. … He got hurt early on, and he battled every week to get in there and play for us.”
With a healthy Breida next fall, Shanahan has high hopes for San Francisco’s running game with the expected return of McKinnon. Shanahan is also excited about the return of Raheem Mostert, who broke his arm in early November during a four-game stretch in which he averaged 8.9 yards per carry while filling in for Breida.
“We learned a lot about a lot of our running backs this year,” Shanahan said. “Not just Breida, but also Raheem. We went into this year just with Raheem mainly as a special-teams guy. The games that he played in, where he got a go at running back, he did a hell of a job.”
Pettis leads San Francisco with five touchdown catches. He’s second on the team in receiving yards (467) behind Pro Bowl tight end George Kittle (1,228). The second-round pick from Washington logged 371 yards and four touchdowns over his past six games.
Marquise Goodwin, the team’s starting “X” receiver, spent two weeks away from the team to deal with a family matter, which led to an increase in Pettis’ snaps. His recent play indicates he’ll be a key component in 2019, when Jimmy Garoppolo is back under center.
Shanahan, who admitted in recent weeks to being tough on the rookie, was asked what led to Pettis’ late-season surge in production.
“I think he just truly had go through it to understand the urgency of the NFL and just all the stuff that you have to go through to get open on a route,” Shanahan said. “Dante’s had success everywhere he’s been before. I know he expects to have it at the NFL level, too. I think it takes a while for a guy to learn maybe why he isn’t having (success).
“Dante’s a hard worker. He does everything you ask. But I think it took some time to realize hard you got to go on every single route. How exact you have to be with your technique with your feet, how aggressive your hands have to be.”
Veteran Pierre Garçon, 32, isn’t a lock to return next season. He was shut down this month to have arthroscopic knee surgery, which could mean the 49ers rely heavily on Pettis to improve.
“Hopefully, (Pettis) learned a little bit of the success he can have the harder he goes. He’ll take that into his offseason,” Shanahan said. “… He’s going to get better or worse, and we’re going to need him to get better and we need him to get better every day. As long as he works, I think he will.”
Shanahan also said tight end Garrett Celek (concussion), Goodwin (bruised calf) and defensive back K’waun Williams (knee) will be re-evaluated before practice Wednesday.
The players were given Monday and Tuesday off for Christmas. Coaches spent Monday at the facility to prepare the game plan before spending Christmas with their families.

I think Aaron Donald clinched the Defensive Player of the Year award Sunday with a three-sack day in Arizona. He’s got 19.5, and should win the sack title with room to spare. On Sunday, he set the record for most sacks in a season by a defensive tackle. Now, against the Niners and inexperienced quarterback Nick Mullens in the regular-season finale, Donald will need 3.5 sacks to break Michael Strahan’s record of 22.5.

Seahawks coach Pete Carroll got a richly deserved extension on Monday—contracting him through 2021—which makes this a good time to take a good look at how he’s breathed new life into his program over the last year, with Seattle headed back to the playoffs without Richard Sherman, Kam Chancellor, Michael Bennett, Cliff Avril or Earl Thomas. Part of it, of course, was knowing when to part with established stars, and that his program needed to reestablish the culture of competition and physicality it was built. Another was the reworking of the coaching staff, and in particular the hires of offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer and line coach Mike Solari. And then, there’s been the willingness to let talented young guys like Tre Flowers, Chris Carson, Tedric Thompson, David Moore and Poona Ford take their lumps and learn on the fly. The result has been a team that’s playing faster and with more purpose that the late era Legion of Boomers.
Those inside the building also credit returning core players like Russell Wilson, Tyler Lockett, Bobby Wagner, Jarran Reed, Frank Clark and Doug Baldwin for being torchbearers for the program.

The Los Angeles Rams defeated the Arizona Cardinals, 31-9, in Week 16 of the 2018 NFL season.
RAMS
C.J. Anderson went off for 167 yards on 20 carries in Todd Gurley‘s absence. It often took more than one defender to bring the big back down, and his fresh legs were easily able to handle the heavy workload. The Rams owned the line of scrimmage and ran for 269 yards on 41 carries.
Jared Goff had a solid day, as the Rams’ play-action passing was in full effect after establishing a dominant ground attack. Goff finished with a 118.1 quarterback rating after going 19-of-24 for 216 yards. His favorite target was Robert Woods, who had six catches for 89 yards.
Aaron Donald was his usual dominant self, as he notched three more sacks and a number of run stops. The Arizona line has had struggles throughout the season, and against the best defender in football, today was no exception.
Ndamukong Suh was also a force, as he scored a cleanup sack to go with two passes batted down at the line of scrimmage. When the Rams get a lead like they did today, the pass-rushing duo of Suh and Donald make it next to impossible for teams to come back.
CARDINALS
There aren’t many positives to take away for a Cardinals’ defense. They allowed 461 yards and were unable to get off the field as LA converted 6/9 on third downs.
Cornerback Brandon Williams struggled in coverage, surrendering a 39-yard touchdown to Robert Woods along with a 26-yard crossing route to Josh Reynolds. The Cardinals will look to address the cornerback spot opposite Patrick Peterson in the offseason, as they haven’t found a successful combination for some time.
Josh Rosen started out well, as he was able to move the ball early by scrambling. However, his lack of time and lack of open targets downfield eventually caught up with him, and it was clear throughout the third quarter he was trying to gut it out at far less than 100 percent.
Larry Fitzgerald had a nice outing in what could prove to be his final home game in Arizona should he choose to retire after the season. He was the only receiver able to create separation against the Rams’ defensive backs and threw a nice touchdown pass on a trick play in the first half.
Keys to the Game
Los Angeles
Anderson gave the Rams’ offense a nice boost after they came back to reality the past two weeks. The Rams will play next week for a first-round bye, and it’ll be interesting to see whether they rest Gurley considering Anderson’s performance.
Arizona
Donald was far too much to handle for the Arizona interior offensive line.

Cardinals claimed S D.J. Swearinger off waivers from the Redskins.It means Swearinger made it by zero teams, as the Cardinals had the No. 1 waiver claim. That’s not something you usually want to see when waiving a player. Swearinger is returning to Arizona after spending 2015-16 in the desert. Although prone to creating headaches for coaches, Swearinger has become a much more consistent player in recent years. He could be a 2019 starter for the Cardinals. That is the final year of his contract.

This was an adjustment I hoped to see. I think we should stick with it. Today felt right. Reynolds got some snaps, but the majority of our snaps came with Everett and Higbee. I think Everett is a bigger mismatch than Reynolds.
It’s true that Goff and Everett aren’t synced up and that Everett still makes some mistakes. But the trial by fire he’s getting should push him to get better. There’s no doubting his physical gifts.
TEs were flying off the board in that draft. It was an absurdly good TE draft. I doubt Everett would have lasted much longer. And the rumors were that we badly wanted Evan Engram. It felt to me like McVay wanted to get a gifted TE to run his 12 personnel. After drafting Everett, he realized he had further to go than expected and opted to go with an 11 personnel approach. I was a Kittle guy, but I couldn’t criticize the Everett pick. He was an extraordinarily gifted TE with sure hands. I still think that pick will pan out for us. Although, Kittle would have given us a quicker impact.

The Rams will have two starters day-to-day with their respective injuries as the team begins the final week of the regular season.
Running back Todd Gurley was inactive for the Week 16 victory over the Cardinals with a knee injury. Head coach Sean McVay said on his Monday conference call that the running back was feeling better on Monday, but that the team will continue to do what’s best for Gurley over the course of the week.
“It’s kind of the same place we were at,” McVay said. “He came in, was feeling good today. We’re just taking it a day at a time right now. … I know he’s done a nice job with his rehab. No real updates, but we’re just kind of going to take it day-to-day with Todd.”
Gurley has been dealing with left knee inflammation since the Week 15 contest with the Eagles. While Gurley went through a pregame workout before Sunday’s matchup with Arizona, it was determined that the best course of action would be for him to sit out.
“We want to do what’s best for Todd, most importantly,” McVay said. “And what’s best for Todd is also what’s best for our football team. We don’t want to do anything where we’re putting him in harm’s way.”
The Georgia product has 1,251 yards rushing and 1,831 yards from scrimmage so far in 2018. And despite missing Sunday’s contest, he still leads the league with 17 rushing touchdowns and 21 total touchdowns.
Also on the injury front, safety Lamarcus Joyner left Sunday’s game with an ankle injury. McVay said Joyner is also day-to-day.
“His ankle was good,” McVay said. “It’s going to be a day-to-day deal, but everything checked out pretty clean. Got that thing rolled up on a little bit, but I think the way he attacks his rehab this week, we’ll be day-to-day with him, but I expect him to be able to be in good shape. But we’ll see how he responds when these guys get back in here on Wednesday.”
The Rams players and coaches will be off on Tuesday before getting back to their regular schedule on Wednesday.

#Rams averaged 7.6 yards on 1st downs today. They had been dominating that down until last 3 weeks. Got back to it today, They also got back to running more on 1st than passing: 24 runs to 11 passes. First time in 3 games they were back to running more than passing on 1st downTo put it in perspective, they were under six yards per play on 1st downs against #Lions and under five against #Bears and #Eagles and were 57 passes to 34 runs in those games.
I felt like today the #Rams imposed their will on the #Cardinals. It wasn’t so much about who they beat – obviously, you have to take that into account – but more how they did it. And how they did it is how you have to do it in the playoffs.

In the chat I said the McVay Rams are undefeated when Donald gets at least one sack. That’s true but I gave you the wrong numbers on that. This is from before the game:
The Rams have a 16-0 record, since the start of the 2017 season, when Donald records at least one sack in a game. They’re 5-7 when he doesn’t.

Now, after the Cards game, it’s 17-0.
This does not count the 2 games he didn’t start in 2017. So he has played 29 games, and is now at 17 games where he gets at least one sack (and the Rams have won all of those).
