I think Noteboom & Brian Allen are doing an excellent job upfront. The depth at guard is my biggest concern. I’m still not solid on Austin Blythe. He is a good technician though. He Maneuvers defense of lineman around well. He gets over powered easy.
Here is Austin Blythe on his back legs trying to block. Not great form. Just saying I’m not a big fan & this doesnot help change my Perspective of his play. My point is I believe he is the weak link the last 4 games of the season & playoffs. He played real well against Dallas though.

I attended two practices and am again going today. Who impressed me most?
Henderson..amazing acceleration and great hands. This guy will pick up the slack.
Weddle always talking to teammates…great communicator.
Gurley not limping at all and Kupp looks ready to rock.

Gaines may be short, but he is wide. I think he and Sebastian-Day will spell for each other on run/pass plays. Gaines is a big boy, and he will be a roadblock in the middle. We don’t need him to get push up the middle (though he certainly does that!!); we need him to just clog the middle.
Rapp looks good, but I’m a bit concerned that he’s often just standing around instead of communicating with the ones in the secondary—Talib, Peters, Weddle, and Johnson. With his helmet off, he really looks like a lost little high school kid, but I think he’s going to factor in pretty well.
David Long is a true technician. His athleticism doesn’t really jump out at you, but he had really good technique. He got beat on a crisp five-yard slant by Michael Thomas, but I think that’s because he was on an island and his responsibility was not to get beat deep. He came in and made the tackle right after the catch was made. On another play, he was isolated wide on Robert Woods, and he was able to knock the ball away. He did a really good job of using the sideline to squeeze Woods before reaching out to bat the ball away. I am VERY excited about David Long.

Kolone actually looks okay. He is a strong guy.Evans & Edwards are moving around a lot.Looking forward to the preseason.Bill Johnson is gone , so the D’line Is going to bring in a different mind set. Wade adapts well
to different types off fronts.I saw Marquis Christian in a lot.
The rookie Taylor Rapp did not show much except a little on special teams. Did not pick up on Nick Scott. There were a couple sleepers out there.
The Rams Depth is pretty good.

Aaron Donald stands above the rest in drills
When looking at the stats and film, it’s easy to see why Donald is regarded as arguably the best player in the NFL. But if you watch him in practice drills, you also get the sense that he’s simply on another level. Whether it’s his explosiveness or power when coming off the line and hitting pads, Donald stands out.
Jared Goff picked apart starting defense
Not much has been made about Goff’s performance in camp thus far – it seems to be relatively quiet on that front – but he apparently had a nice performance on Day 4.
The starting offense has often gone up against the second-team defense, but on Tuesday, Goff faced the starters. And he did not disappoint.
Battle brewing at punt returner
After cutting Pharoh Cooper last season, the Rams are still seeking a consistent and reliable return man. JoJo Natson was the primary punt returner last year and he has a chance to maintain that position. The Rams haven’t settled on a player on punt returns and there are several guys in contention.
According to team reporter Myles Simmons, undrafted rookies Nsimba Webster and Alex Bachman also returned punts Tuesday.
Natson has the most experience, but he also had some fumbling issues in the past. If Los Angeles wants to make a change, there are a few candidates to replace him.
Micah Kiser has yet to lock down starting job
Simmons reported that Hager worked with the first-team defense in the first drills of practice. He’s been rotating with Kiser at inside linebacker next to Cory Littleton, so Kiser has yet to earn a starting spot – as many expected him to.
The Rams aren’t going to hand the job to him and he’ll have to earn it, but Hager does seem to be in the running to replace Mark Barron. The preseason will be important for this position battle because it’s one of the few that has yet to be decided.
Tight end is a position to watch
The Rams have two very capable tight ends in Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett and it doesn’t seem like either one has “won” the position battle just yet. The Rams are going to use both players regardless of who looks better in camp, and on Tuesday, they both made standout plays.
Higbee caught a pass in the back of the end zone for a touchdown, while Everett hauled in a pass on a crosser and turned all the way upfield for a big gain.
If either of these players can turn into a reliable and consistent receiver, the offense is going to be that much better.

First of all, I wish y’all had a chance to make it out to one of these open practices….the Rams have come along way since their first year back and just keep adding more to an already fantastic experience…shaded bleachers, kids zone, food court, beer garden, team gear store, stage for the legends, autograph booths, free swag, etc. the Rams truly are a first class organization
Amazing thinking back to 1994 when you could just walk up and watch practice on a beat up field with about 10-20 other fans…. no bleachers, no food, no fanfare, nothing. Times sure have changed as it has become a festival of sorts with thousands of fans, even on a Monday afternoonOk back to the day….Cool to walk into the main concourse and see all the legends there just hanging out, signing or on stage talking Rams. Not much of an autograph hound so I headed up to the fields to watch the players warm up and get some good seats. Got lucky by sweet talking to some little cutie at the season ticket members booth and she hooked me up with a “preferred seating” pass that was a sectioned off bleacher with free snacks and beverages….definitely a nice surprise.
Watching the QB’s warm up there is no doubt who the starter is as Goff just throws such a better looking ball with zip…Bortles looked good too, he’s a big kid. Him and Goff seem to be buddies as they were always hanging out and doing drills with each other …. at the end of practice they walked over to the southeast side of the fields and had a little battle of throwing the ball in the big yellow trash can….Bortles made one, Goff was close but didn’t get one in. Pretty fun to watch
Gurley, looks fast and no indication that he is hurt…looked great. Once again he ended his day on the juggs machine like he always does.
Looks like McVay finally might have found his Chris Thompson in the form of rookie Darrell Henderson … dude catches everything and is quite shifty. A short guy, but not little… can’t wait to see him in preseason
Not only do the Rams have three great WR’s, they now have four!!! Reynolds looks like a different player compared to last training camp…. he stole the show today by getting wide open on a long bomb with a perfect throw from Goff…. Woods dropped and easy TD in red zone portion, but he won’t do that in a game ever.
Not a lot of physical stuff as they were in shells as opposed to fully padded.
Fun to watch McVay do what he loves and that is coaching them up…he’s all over the place and always coaching.
GZ was booming 60 yarders right at us….and Hekk was drilling punts as usual

Everett and Higbee look like men amongst boys out there….they should both be improved in 2020

1) The Rams were in full pads for the first time this training camp on Tuesday. With that, the club had a couple different special teams drills that can make individuals stand out from the pack. The first was a punt drill, where coordinator John “Bones” Fassel set up a one-on-one type of drill with analogous positions on the punt team and the return team. Essentially, it was a man-on-man situation to see who could win each challenge.
2) As that was happening, JoJo Natson, Austin Proehl, Nsimba Webster, and Alex Bachman served as the punt returners — catching the ball from the JUGS machine. Running back Matt Colburn demonstrated his potential value by bursting down the field as a gunner more than once.
3) The defense began the first period of practice with a pursuit drill. Notably on the first-team defense, Bryce Hager was on the field as the unit’s second inside linebacker next to Cory Littleton. Hager and second-year LB Micah Kiser have traded days at that spot through the first four days of camp.
4) The defensive line and outside linebackers went to a smaller auxiliary field to go through some individual drills. There, both position groups had tho extend their arms against a sled, then move their feet in order to see exactly what direction the “ball carrier” (which, in this case, was their position coach) was going. Even defensive tackle Aaron Donald didn’t quite do the drill right at first.
5) For another defensive line drill, position coach Eric Henderson had the players stay low out of the chute but then find a tackling donut. The drill forces the players to both keep their pad level in a good spot while keeping their eyes up.

6) And one last defensive line drill — which Donald dominated — the players each had to touch a towel on the ground before knocking a tackling dummy over in the backfield.

7) During 11-on-11 drills, Donald and outside linebacker Dante Fowler got off the ball so fast on one play that they nearly took a handoff from backup quarterback Blake Bortles in the backfield. The pair of defenders absolutely ruined the play for the offense, and embraced one another in celebration near the sideline. Everyone knows what to expect from Donald, but Fowler has put tighter a nice camp so far.
8) During a starters vs. starters 11-on-11 period in the red zone, quarterback Jared Goff connected with running back Darrell Henderson for a touchdown over the middle. Then a play later, Goff hit wideout Cooper Kupp with an out route to the right for another touchdown.
9) Tight end Tyler Higbee also had a few nice receptions during Tuesday’s practice. Earlier in the day, he caught a pass deep down the middle for what ostensibly could have been a touchdown. Then Goff finished a two-minute drill with a pass in the back of the end zone to the tight end for a clear score.
10) In another two-minute drill, wide receiver Josh Reynolds elevated and caught a pass from Bortles on the right side of the field. Reynolds continues to use his frame in order to make plays throughout training camp.

I got hooked up with my job and spent the day in a VIP tent.
View ended up being both great and bad depending on the time of practice.
It was the first day in pads and there were some fun drills for sure. Special Teams was the most fun to watch for some good hitting.
TG3 was on the field but not suited up. Whit played the whole time. I had the OL near me for a while and paid special attention to Allen. I would say he looked almost as tall as Blythe, the two of them have a very similar build actually. Where Allen seemed to stand out was during a drill using the slides. He seemed to have the most punch out of all the linemen (Noteboom’s punched seemed pretty weak actually). I also watched him on 11 on 11 and he seemed to work really well with Goff, unlike others with Bortles etc who seemed to have some shaky exchanges. All in all, Allen is not my biggest worry, Noteboom looks good, but wondering about the lack of punch.
I noticed that Higbee was a man among boys when the TEs were working out, he just looks huge and great. He also seemed to be playing in front of Everett and had a nice TD catch from Goff in 11 on 11. I wonder if Higbee is holding off Everett and knows his spot as top dog is being challenged, either way he is stepping up and looks great.
There will be no QB controversy from what I saw today. Goff seems in a different league than Bortles and Bortles seemed in a different league than the other two camp arms.
JoJo seemed to get a lot of work as a starting WR and made a few plays. He also stayed after working on punt catches from the jug machine. He seemed to get a lot of play today and seemed to make the most of it.
The Goff connection to Cooks looked natural and great, but there was one pass to Cooks that was low and difficult but that I believe he should have had, His hands still seem to lack strength for those hard catches. When it is placed in stride it looks amazing and that happened more than once. Timing seems better than ever. Later on Goff to Woods seemed to take over and timing looked great there too.
Both Brown and Henderson looked spry and had some good runs. Henderson had a great catch going up for it and think he has a lot of catching ability.
Weather was great and it was really fun watching Brokers and Whit playing with their kids on the field after practice.
All in all, things moved pretty quick and it seemed like an efficient practice. Seems to me that the offense is ahead of the defense right now (which makes sense).

Every time I look up #Rams WR Josh Reynolds is doing something good. People talk about how good the trio of Cooks/Woods/Kupp is, but Rams are absolutely four deep in terms of top-end talentInteresting to watch all the various deployment points #Rams HC Sean McVay is launching his running backs so far in camp. Can tell you this: there is creativity in how he’ll make defenses defend the RB’s – and keep them guessing on pass/run use no matter where they line up.
Super impressive 11 on 11 period for Jared Goff against a first-team defense that was doing all sorts of stuff in front of him to confuse and get pressure on him. He responded by delivering three straight throws into tight windows.
The #Rams are throwing a lot at their young offensive linemen – including a mid-season form Aaron Donald – and they’ve responded well, including a strong day on Tuesday.
Interesting observation from #Rams Joe Noteboom to me on Matthews/Fowler/growth of others on D. line and what it means up front: “Now we have guys across the whole board. They can’t go to (A. Donald) because someone else gets free now. Even we aren’t sliding to AD every time.”

Another energetic practice. Couldn’t ask for better weather, upper 70’s with a nice breeze. We first got a look at guys taking punt from the machine. Austin Proehl, Jo Jo Natson, Nsima Webster, Alex Bachman all got a couple of turns. they had 5 gunners coming at them as the ball was shot to them from the machine. Jo Jo still has the best juke moves and is quicker than the rest. I rate Webster not far behind him. The others, meh. At the end of the drill, Jo Jo fielded 5 punts before he dropped all of them trying to field the sixth. (two in each arm and one between his legs).
Gurley dressed but held out. LB Okow not dressed, tight hammy, was told he should go on Sat. in scrimmage with Chargers.
I think McVay wanted a quieter first part of practice as most position groups worked on technique and situationals. they didn’t really start going at each other till after the second hour with 7 on 7’s.
7 on 7. Woods from Goff, Henderson quick out. Kupp quick out. Goff looking sharp, getting ball out quick. Rookie Long with a nice breakup. Everrett with play action TD. Mundt TD vs 1st unit D. Austin Proel from Brotles nice play action catch. Brown wiith sideline grab for TD from Goff. Higbee gets one over the middle in traffic.
On to Red Zone drill. 2nd OL Evans LT, Demby LG, Nearly C, Kolone RG, Edwards RT. Bortles moved the ball, tucked it and ran for yds on one play, Henderson screen from Goff for TD for 1st team O. Kupp TD over middle.
Here I had my first technical issue. My pen quit working. Everything is now from memory not much more though some 11 on 11 with a lot of good contact.
Kupp got a long pass from Goff, Brown got some good runs and catches. Bortles connected to Thomas for a nice gain. 1st team D got to Bortles couple of times. Jo-Day with a sack (He was with 1st team all practice, Gaines with 2nd D.
69 is Sebastian Joseph-Day and he’s been starting at NT with Brockers on his left and Donald on his right. Gaines has been starting NT for the 2nd team D.
Day and Brockers are about the same size. Both look in terrific shape and giving the OL all they can handle. I really like what I’m seeing from the starting DL.
Webster can field punts. If he can show as a WR in pre-season he might have a chance to unseat Jo Jo as 6the WR.
Great practice. players were intense and they don’t get to do any standing around. No fights.
I think they are all off tomorrow and go to Costa Mesa a few miles down the roed to scrimmage and practice with the Chargers They start at 10am and I plan to be there.
Thursday will be an early report. I’ll try and post as soon as I get home.

Josh Reynolds has some great plays today Goff found him over the middle on a dig route through a trio of defenders in the area, including Taylor Rapp, who recognized the play just a bit too late. However, I was impressed by his closing speed.
Cooper Kupp had a great deep reception from Goff on a play where they were lined up in a 1 x 3 formation. Kupp was the inside slot receiver on the right, and it looked like man coverage with a Cover-1 shell. Talib and Peters were in man coverage against Woods and Cooks to the outside. The defender (Marqui Christian or Robey-Coleman) on Kupp opened his hips at the snap and Kupp streaked down the seam for a wide open catch. Goff saw it all the way and hit him in stride, never even considering going elsewhere.
An interesting thing to note—I’ve seen our D play a lot of cover-3 with Robey-Coleman playing the deep safety and Weddle/Johnson/Rapp coming down into the box as a hybrid linebacker/safety type, usually over the tight end. Our offense has responded by throwing the mid-distance out routes and digs that the cover-3 are susceptible to.
Weddle and John Johnson have a very good rapport already, as they were trying to disguise coverages. Most of the time, they make it look like a cover-2 shell, but they’ll break off into a cover-1 or cover-3 at the break with Johnson typically going down into the box. Very exciting to see them test Goff, but even more exciting to consider what they’ll do to opposing offenses during the season. Weddle is going to freak up a lot of plays for opposing offenses.
Everett often lining up wide, and being guarded by Peters or Talib, rather than a safety.

I left early but have a few takes from camp today.
Everett looks leaner,stronger,faster. I think I saw Reynold make a real nice play. Copper Kupp made a play on an out. Cooks looks really quick. Wants to get physical in the middle. Nice to see. I think he might have bulked up.
My take from today is how freaking much Morgan Fox is going to mean to The Rams upfront. He is going to get a lot of reps. I thought he got some first team reps today ??
Troy Hill is looking sharp. He is such a solid special teams guy. I like him. Once again for fans saying trade & cut him. There is a reason he got a 2 year extension.
Hatfield made a nice play. He was wondering if it was a penalty, because I think he knocked someone on there butt.
Weddle made a nice play. I got him going by calling his name. Donald ran up & picked him up. Donald was having fun. In good spirits. He slapped Clay 5 after a QB sack. Going to be fun watching the Vets. Called Weddle an old man. He dresses in all long sleeves & pants.unlike Peters.
Speaking of Talib is just a solid CB.
I’m a big fan of Richards. Not sure he makes it, but he always shows up. Marquis Christian
got some solid reps today. Both blondes?? Lol.John Johnson is real good.
Malcom Brown is a flat out stud. He is all-around good.Speical teams,catching,out of backfield,blocking.
Justin Davies made a play. Aaron Donald after the play tried to dislodge it a few times. He was having fun with it.Ball security is a Ram things
Ram fans around are excited about Henderson. They say he is going to be fun to watch . Smooth.

Really nice day at camp, weather was great. It was youth day, big turnout, lots of kids.
I gotta say, seeing Donald in pads in the blue and white uniform, is quite a sight to see.
I was just coming to the conlusion that there’s really not much difference between in pads and not these days but though the difference may not be huge, it is significant. No tackling but felt like real football.
The offense won most of the time. Goff looks great, seems like he has more zip on the ball. Henderson continues to get a lot of reps. Thomas doing stuff with the 2’s so maybe he has a shot. Higbee seems to have taken his game up a notch.
I’m looking for big things from Fowler. He’s on the field early getting individual coaching and just looks really strong a focused out there.
The 3rd and 4th QB get no reps in team drills except after practice is over. I read this is to get them ready for preseason games in case anyone is wondering how we’re approaching preseason this year.

SIRIUS VISITS RAMS, SOME NOTES
Here’s what I heard so far….
Demoff said they studied the GSOT team that should have lasted 8 or 9 years, not 3. They try to learn from that every day so it doesn’t happen again.
Got a bit defensive about extending Goff when interviewer said everyone knows it’s just a matter of when. Demoff said not everyone just you.
Talking about Watts Rams new uniforms, Kevin said a lot of people are asking is that new look for the 2020 Rams. He paused and said you’ll have to wait and see.
Les said they let Saffold (who is a very good OG) go so they could keep all the young guys intact. Rather do 2nd contracts (like Havenstein) than 3rd contracts. They are planning ahead. That’s what Noteboom and Allen were about. Sounded like part of the lesson learned from GSOT collapse.
Gurley said he feels good. Only needs 2 weeks to get in the groove since he knows his body well and how it works in TC.
Holt and TG talked a lot about offseason travel.
Goff up next…
Torry predicted Goff would throw 40 TDs this year. Jared said he’ll try to hold up his end.
Goff said the narrative around Gurley is unfair. He said nothings changed with Todd. Same guy. Just had a little soreness down the stretch.
Goff talked about how smart Kupp is. How he reminded him about stuff at the LOS.
Said he worked with Allen last year when Sully had days off, so nothing new here.
Said he excited to see how the young guys play, especially Henderson. Won’t know how good he is until they get pads on. Also the young guys on defense.
Torry said Gurley looks good from what he’s seen. Said he knows what an arthritic knee feels like and it hurts. It’s mentally draining as well. Thinks Rams have right plan to keep Gurley fresh. He thinks Henderson will help, also mentioned Kelly being a help.
Torry said he likes Long, very good in man to man, watching him at practice today.
Donald said McVay is the reason he’s happy to be an LA Ram.
Torry was slobbering all over Donald. Said he has everything, reached the top, and doesn’t slack one bit, keeps learning every day. Said AD will be in the class with Deacon and Merlin. The all time great Rams.
Kupp said he needs to relearn nuances.
Said he thought Goff was great last year but sees a major step up from him this year. His command of the offense and understanding coverages.

On the upswing–
Les Snead, general manager, Los Angeles Rams: Early in 2017, Snead’s future in Los Angeles was very much up in the air. It was unclear how much say he’d have in hiring a new coach and whether that new coach could even choose to look elsewhere for a front-office partner. Fast-forward 30 months, and Snead received a contract extension through 2023 this week, alongside coach Sean McVay’s deal. Credit the Rams for believing this partnership can work, and credit Snead for adapting so seamlessly to the McVay era. St. Louis Rams fans don’t want to hear it, but this is one of the smoothest-running organizations in football.

IMHO, it isn’t about pre-snap communications and audibles when there are unexpected looks. The audibles are still pre-planned, practiced stuff. McVay has shown to be a great schemer and his standard fare will beat the crap out of most teams/schemes even when they know it’s coming. The crappy games (the magic sub 80 QB rating games that we read about on here ad nauseum), appear to me are when the standard fare doesn’t work based on defensive scheme, talent that minimizes our strengths, or shitty weather (hello Chicago).
The next steps are less on Goff (again IMHO) than McVay to be an in-game adjuster. Goff is fully capable of executing when there’s something successful to execute. In the SB, facing 5 man fronts and quarters zone behind, we kept trying our standard fare (outside zone run, intermediate/deep routes). Screens and dink-and-dunk might have countered that…kind of what the Pats did to us. Hey, we’re in trouble, let’s throw a 5-yd crossing pattern to Edleman. We also finally got beat when Billy B/McDaniels inserted the FB in the 4th quarter. Several back breaking runs off that adjustment.
And it’s not a formation thing, as if go to more 12 personnel solves it. (Although I’d like to see some roster flexibility to “go jumbo and say we’re running right at you, fuck you stop it.”). Probably a very minority opinion, but McVay growing as an in-game coach is more important the perceived short-comings of Goff, Gurley’s knee, etc. And he didn’t like getting schooled in the SB, so I have full confidence he’ll get it done.
