Last year to this year… Boom was better than anyone we have this year, in terms of his ability to handle change and step in to different spots quickly. But after him? In comparison I think this year’s depth is better because you have Edwards looking like a steal and Evans improving every game, plus some others like Kolone and Brewer playing earlier snaps vs better competition and holding their own.
Where we have probs is center. Neary got trucked last game, and we don’t have a young guy like Allen sitting back there learning.

John Franklin-Meyers was very impressive rushing the passer, making some nice moves en route to a few pressures, including the lone sack of the night for his team.
Mike Thomas had an impressive night in a game that didn’t have much offense. On the Rams’ second play of the game, he scorched the Denver secondary on a hitch-and-go for a 51-yard gain. Thomas also made an acrobatic catch near the sideline, ending the night with 76 yards through the air.
Rookie Takeaways
Dakota Allen might have been the most impressive player on the Rams’ defense tonight. He made plays in the run game, rushing the passer and in coverage. He finished with five tackles and included a pass breakup to boot.

1) Clay Matthews insists he isn’t bitter, that he has no ill feelings toward the Packers. He says playing for the Rams “feels like this is where I’m supposed to be”…2) But Matthews says the Packers essentially told him to get lost just before free agency, and it caught him off guard. “I was kind of taken aback, because I thought I’d always be back there, whether it was at a cheaper price (or not)…”

Luck is not some pansy who just didn’t want to rehab. My guess is rehab wasn’t helping and he couldn’t get fully right. Those attacking Luck should probably talk to him. I would also add that until people see what NFL training rooms look like on day after game and while players are rehabbing injury they have no idea the amount of physical toll the game takes on players and how hard it can be to come out relatively healthy on the other end.==

Understand the context, this guy is a dude that Goff liked and followed in College, so there is a level of comfort.
Some of the cussing is gratuitous, but the football stuff is gold.
For example, talking about New Orleans game (NFC Championship), with the crowd noise, the helmet malfunction then his first pick he said he was amazed because he came to the sideline and “Could NOT care less” about the pick”. He was amazed at himself that he wasn’t even worried about it. He said it didn’t “even trigger” as a problem.
He talks about learning this concept of “PACE” in high school: Performance After Critical Error (PACE) and how critical that is for the QB. Talks about situations where this has applied.
This is a really good interview and so different from the others because Goff is comfortable with this guy and knows he has time to give details.
He talks about the Rams trading up for him and asking him to show up at the same time he was to throw out the 1st Pitch at the Giants game and wondering if he could move the interview. He runs through all the behind the scenes draft process which is fascinating, using Luminosity games and strange questions asked at the combine.
He talks about the SB Loss and owns up to his own shortfalls and how he deals with it.

I was out at training camp the first two days and my observations were just that the defense appeared to be super fast across the board but was impressed mostly with Fowler he looked like the number 3 overall pick in the draft which he was. I have a feeling that he is going to be special this year, and that the inside/outside pressure we get with Donald Fowler and even Matthews is going to be incredible.

I’m bullish on the defensive line depth. Assuming everyone stays healthy on the O-line, and that 7 guys dress on game day, I think the strides Edwards is making creates comfort and that Demby/Evans & eventually Neary will battle for that 7th spot on game day.Ogbonnia Okoronkwo and a young group of linebackers and defensive backs are creating depth and confidence on a deep #Rams roster.

“My reaction is what a great player he is. I’m sure that he’s been going through a lot of things to make this decision. You feel for him, you feel for his team and his teammates. He’s the epitome of class. He’s been a great player, great competitor. I don’t know enough to really have any more of an opinion other than I have a lot of respect. He’s been a great player and I hate it for our game to lose such a great player due to injuries when he’s only been playing for so many years. But, he certainly has made his presence known in this league.”

“He (DT Sebastian Joseph-Day) had a little hamstring tightness. He’s really done such a nice job for us that, listening to (Senior Director, Sports Medicine and Performance) Reggie (Scott) and talking through that there was potentially…you’re going to leave him susceptible to maybe further injuring that. I think just based on all those things, we felt like that was going to be the best decision. We didn’t want to leave him exposed to further injuring that and that was what went into the decision. Had that not occurred, then we were still talking through whether we were going to play him or not. He’s done a nice job for us, but he still is a young player and that’s the reason why we held him out tonight.”

“We’re in the process of doing that. I think, in a lot of ways, some of these calls, we want to make sure that we understand exactly what’s being officiated and really be able to see it because sometimes you can’t really see exactly what was being called if you don’t get the replay. “He’s done a nice job and I think you see the athleticism, you just felt the suddenness and the explosiveness where he arrived and he arrived violently tonight. We’ll go back and look at the tape, but I thought those guys did a good job and it was good to see (DL) John Franklin(-Myers) show up as well.”

“I thought he (QB John Wolford) did a great job tonight. I thought he and (QB) Brandon (Allen) both – even though there weren’t a lot of points to show for it, I thought the offense moved under those guys’ leadership and got up and down the field pretty efficiently, had some sustained drives where they were able to get into a rhythm, get some plays off. I was really impressed with John. You look at the fourth-and-4 touchdown pass, sits in there, works through a progression. Then, even in the four-minute drive, to be able to have the presence and the athleticism, he keeps that ball, gets it to a second-and-short on an early down to really finish out that game. Really good poise by him. You could see, he got through some progressions tonight, was able to evade the rush when some guys came into the backfield and made some plays with his legs. You could see why he’s just a little baller, man, and he did a great job tonight.”

“That’s exactly right. It’s going to be a lot of tough decisions, but that’s a good thing. I think that’s a credit to really (General Manager) Les (Snead), his group and our coaching staff to be able to on-board and create some competitive scenarios and situations. You want it to be that way. I think the biggest thing at the end of the day that we want for all these players is if it doesn’t work out for the Rams, hopefully they’re getting a chance to showcase their skills and it works out somewhere else because there are going to be a lot of guys that, unfortunately, won’t be a part of this very shortly. This week will go by quickly, but, very appreciative of, really, just the way that these guys have consistently worked and I think there is some good, competitive decisions that we’ll have to have to make because of the way the guys are playing.”

“I think we felt like he has done a good job of really establishing himself as the clear number two. If it was a situation where he hasn’t played a lot of football – but when you look at, ‘Alright, what’s really to gain?’ Let’s start to get ourselves in the mindset and the mentality of, ‘Alright, what are we going to do towards the season?’ Because a lot of the stuff that we’re running – as you guys know – is very different than what we’ll look like in terms of concepts, different things that we’ll want to run and do. I think it’s important for he and (QB) Jared (Goff) to really get themselves in the mindset of getting ready for the season and starting to do some different things that we anticipate activating against the (Carolina) Panthers.”
(On what football means to him and why football has been successful and has grown in the last 100 years)
“I think people love it. Football is such a special game where you always talk about how it’s the epitome of a team sport. It takes all 11 (players), all the different lessons that you can learn are so much you’re able to translate into being able to handle the inevitable things that occur in your life. This game has been a true blessing to me and my family. I joke about it, but you love it so much sometimes you probably say, ‘Maybe you need to have a little bit of a life outside of it.’ The people you get to meet, whether it be the players, the coaches, the experiences that it’s presented. My grandfather’s history with this game and what I’ve learned, I could go on and on about what the game has meant to my family, but I think – more than anything – it teaches you lessons and it teaches you that it’s about people being a part of something bigger than yourself. When you’re around special guys like what we are here, you get excited about coming to work and you’re trying to do right for them. When you achieve the success collectively and you’re able to share in some of the moments in the locker room afterwards, there’s no feeling and there’s no other way you can emulate and mimic those types of situations and that’s one of the many things that I love so much about this game.”

“I thought so. I felt like we protected better. We had a chance to let some things develop in the pass-game, got some decent runs off where we were at least in some second-and-6s, some second-and-manageables, where we were able to potentially keep your run-pass options open. I thought that was instrumental in really being able to sustain some drives even though it might not have shown on some of the points where we had to finish in the red zone. But, I thought overall the offense moved the ball pretty consistently all night and that was a result of the offensive line’s consistent play.”

I watched the end of Calvin Johnson’s career. I watched him walk into a locker room at 5 every morning, physically, emotionally & mentally anguished over the pain of his injuries. At Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum for the only time this preseason, the Rams defeated the Broncos 10-6 Saturday evening. The vast majority of L.A.’s starters once again rested, so those in reserve roles received lots of reps as a result.
Here are five instant takeaways from the exhibition matchup.
1) WOLFORD, ALLEN LOOK MORE COMFORTABLE WITHIN OFFENSE AS THOMAS AND GREENE CONTRIBUTE
With backup QB Blake Bortles – the starter for the Rams’ first two preseason games – resting, backup Brandon Allen got the start against Denver and looked comfortable across the series he played in.
His 51-yard completion to WR Michael Thomas on the Rams’ first offensive series got the unit off to a strong start, and he helped lead L.A. on a scoring drive capped off by a 37-yard Greg Zuerlein field goal.
QB John Wolford stepped in during the second half and found WR Jalen Greene for a four-yard touchdown pass early in the fourth quarter, capping off a 12-play, 52-yard drive that took nearly six minutes off the clock and gave the Rams a 10-6 lead.
2) PETERSON THE PLAYMAKER
CB Kevin Peterson inspiring preseason added a new chapter Saturday night, as he recorded his second interception of the preseason.
LB Dakota Allen’s tip of Broncos rookie QB Brett Rypien’s pass led to Peterson’s pick in the third quarter.
Peterson’s first interception came in the preseason opener against the Raiders, just over a year removed from suffering an ACL tear in last year’s preseason opener that cost him the remainder of L.A.’s 2018 campaign.
3) STARTERS’ DRESS REHEARSAL LIMITED TO JUST WARMUPS
Traditionally, week three of the preseason has served as the “dress rehearsal” for NFL teams’ starters. They usually play a couple of series, then exit the game to avoid the risk of injury prior to the regular season.
For the Rams, the majority of their starters suited up and participated in pregame warmups, then changed into street clothes prior to kickoff. Considering Rams head coach Sean McVay said this week that playing first-team defense was off the table for Saturday’s game, the move doesn’t come as a total surprise.
The exception was Bortles, who still dressed but did not see any action against the Broncos. DT Sebastian Joseph-Day, projected to start at nose tackle according to the team’s unofficial depth chart, did not play, with rookie Greg Gaines starting in his place.
4) HENDERSON WORKLOAD WATCH
After significant involvement in the passing game against the Cowboys, RB Darrell Henderson Jr. instead saw his script flipped and was more of a factor in the running game.
Henderson led all Rams rushers with 11 carries for 28 yards, his longest attempt going for nine yards. However, in the passing game, he only had one catch for four yards.
The former University of Memphis standout has 23 carries for 57 yards, plus eight catches for 37 yards through three preseason games.
5) THOMAS INVOLVED EARLY AND OFTEN
WR Mike Thomas played a big role in the Rams’ early offensive execution.
His 51-yard reception helped Los Angeles reach the Denver 11 on its first offensive drive. He ended the day with three catches for 76 yards, all in the first half. The former 2016 sixth-round pick’s performances through week 3 of the preseason have made a strong impression.

znModeratorWhen I was a Park Ranger, there was a stand of Hemlocks at the Dingman’s Falls section of the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area that had never been logged. The trees there are 400 years old and 6 feet in diameter, and Hemlocks are slow growers.
