    Reporters are not allowed to watch team drill portion of practice so difficult to assess. But to this point, it does not appear they trust him enough. Perhaps that will be new wrinkle tonight.

    They will always be looking to add depth. Can’t expect line to not break down when QB is dropping back 68 times. And they haven’t really given line extended opportunities to block for Gurley.

    No. You have to remember that I covered USC from 2002-2014 so there was plenty of bizarre to go along with all the other compelling stories. But this is definitely an interesting storyline.

    Will Rams division dominance continue?

    For the first time since Sean McVay was hired, the Rams do not hold at least a share of first place in the NFC West. For the moment, at least externally, they’re no longer the favorite.

    They have a chance to change that over the next two games, head-to-head against the Seahawks and 49ers. And perhaps division rivalries are just the tonic they need following an embarrassing home loss to Tampa Bay.

    All the shortcomings they got away with against the Panthers, Saints, and Browns were laid bare at the Coliseum in Week 4. Chief among them, what’s the identity of this 2019 group?

    In a sense, the Rams are victims of their own success. When you score more points than any franchise in football over the course of two seasons – and do so in perfect run/pass equilibrium – there’s only one way you can go from there.

    At the quarter pole, it’s clear these are not the 2017-18 Rams. At least not yet; at least not offensively. And that’s fine! It’s a truth that doesn’t need to have negative connotations.

    Perhaps it’s time we stop comparing them to the two-time defending division champions of years gone by, and allow this group of Rams to figure out who they’re going to be and how they’re going to three-peat.

    Contrast in Styles

    The Seahawks have a future Hall of Famer at quarterback at the top of the MVP conversation as the calendar turns to October. Yet, they insist on being a run-first offense, and in fact were the only team in the NFL to attempt more runs than passes last season.

    Conversely, the Rams have an All-Pro tailback and a recent Offensive Player of the Year in Todd Gurley, but have thrown it on 65% of their offensive snaps so far.

    This isn’t the space to tease out all the various reasons why those dynamics are real. We’ll just point to the paradox and predict that despite their tendencies, both Seattle and Los Angeles will go as their superstars go.

    Rethinking Thursday

    Speaking of Gurley, his stance against Thursday Night Football is well-documented and widely-shared around the league.

    Nonetheless, the Rams have to convince themselves that they won the lottery with this TNF assignment.

    First and foremost, it’s early in the schedule and the Rams are relatively healthy, which is huge. Second, even though it’s on the road, it’s in the same time zone. Third, it’s against a familiar division opponent that played on the road last week. And finally, being in Seattle Thursday gives you a four-day head start on the 49ers, who host Cleveland in the final game of Week 5.

    Yes, for the third time this season, the Rams next opponent will play Monday Night Football before taking on Los Angeles.

    It may not feel like it now, but the Rams got a scheduling break. Especially if they capitalize with a win.

    Thursday Night Fireworks

    The Rams have authored two of the most entertaining Thursday games in recent years.

    In Santa Clara in 2017, Goff and Gurley orchestrated a 41-39 barnburner.

    Then, home to the Vikings in 2018, the Rams prevailed 38-31, on the back of a perfect quarterback rating.

    That leaves Goff with two wins, eight touchdowns, and zero interceptions in a pair of Thursday games since 2017.

    If tonight is anything like those performances, we should be in for a good one.

    To be honest, IR, I thought Goff played very well against Tampa, considering the circumstances. I agree with this vid which happens to be embedded in an article. Yeah I know it’s Chris Simms but I think he nails this one.

    They scored more points at this time last year on fewer plays. They threw for more yards and touchdowns on far fewer throws while running the ball more, and for better run yards. They had less turnovers. Yes, the O-line is an issue. But so too is the throw/run ratio.

    Russell Wilson’s average depth of throw is up from 8.9 in 2018 to 9.0 in 2019 and yet his completion percentage is up from 66% to a career-high 73%. And he’s on pace for a career-high 40 total TDs. Dude is so good.

    It is a nice problem when your team is 3-1 with obvious areas they can get better. The funny thing is they are sixth in the NFL in scoring and are 3-1. If they can figure out some efficiency issues, especially in the run game because I think that will help in the pass game, they are on pace for a 12-4 season and, perhaps, have addressed the negative issues by the time they get there

    Rams are sixth in the NFL in points and seventh in yards per game. I’m not sure anyone is really stopping them as much as they are stopping themselves at critical times. They need to clean it up. And they need to commit more to the run game.

    This is an organizational decision on how to manage Gurley, and Sean is being tasked with designing his game plan around that plan and then having to explain it. The problem for Sean is trying to execute that plan while also keeping intact the integrity of his offensive principles. Easier said then done, obviously

    The way they are using Todd Gurley, and not committing themselves to establishing a run game or allowing the line to develop a level of physicality and momentum is not helping. Long way to go before we determine how bad this O-line is. And some adjustments need to be made

    I think it all goes back to how they are using Todd Gurley early in games. At a time they need to establish the run game the most, they are using that time to play him but not use him. To me, if he’s on the field, he needs to be used accordingly. In some ways it’s like McVay is having to coach a 10-man offense for far too many stretches of the game

    [Defense?] The turnovers clearly didn’t help. But you also have to credit TB, Jameis Winston, the game plan dialed up and how it was executed. There was a lot of frustration on the Rams part for not getting off the field on third down and not being able to create pressure. It was a bad day all around. It was a bad day for the defense but they were playing very well over the first three games. Need to give it a little more time.

    What is the deal with Darrell Henderson? Is he having that hard of a time adjusting to the playbook or has McVay truly abandoned the run game all together?

    I have to believe he just hasn’t shown them in the classroom on the practice field he’s ready yet. I think Sean’s use of the run game is being affected by the plan in place for Gurley. That needs to change – and by that I mean they need to re-think the Gurley factor.

    What do you think of the Rams letting Saffold go?

    History probably works against paying an O-lineman on the other side of 30 a third big contract. Plus, it would have left even less money to address some defensive needs. That’s the salary cap for you. It forces you to make really hard decisions. They could certainly use him right now

    Rams starting ILB Bryce Hager (Shoulder) has been ruled OUT of Thursday night’s game against the Seahawks, according to the Rams’ official injury report. In Hager’s absence, Troy Reeder, an undrafted rookie from Delaware, is expected to start. Rookie safety Taylor Rapp (Ankle) is listed as doubtful. If Rapp is unable to play, backup Marqui Christian is expected to assume Rapp’s role.

    The Rams laid an egg at home against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers by giving up 55 points, giving up the highest EPA/pass play of the week in the process. On offense, at least the big plays returned to the Rams’ passing game: Jared Goff had three big-time throws, one more than in the first three weeks combined.

    The Tampa Bay line did a heck of a job against Aaron Donald last week. Non factor. Doubled him and slid protections his way and backs helped — but he was handled. Marpet is a good one at left guard

    Donald actually looked frustrated by the game’s end on the tape.

    How to increase their playoff chances: Fix the offense. Yes, you read that correctly. Sean McVay is an offensive mastermind who has directed a top offense over the past two seasons. But through a 3-1 start, it has been apparent that something just isn’t right. Jared Goff has passed for six touchdowns and six interceptions. Todd Gurley II has vanished in the running game and has hardly been a threat in the passing game. The Rams have lost their rhythm and they must find it again, quickly. Otherwise, it could be a tough rCBS: 7th (4th)

    They just don’t look right on offense this season and the defense came apart against Tampa Bay. Now they head to Seattle on a short week, which will be challenging.

    Jared Goff had more than 500 yards on Sunday, but it wasn’t an impressive day. Heading into a Thursday night showcase game, there’s going to be a lot of talk about Goff and whether he is worth even close to the $134 million deal he got from the Rams. The early returns aren’t good. And the questions will get louder if he doesn’t play well at Seattle.

    Things change overnight in NFL. Last week, L.A. was 3-0. This week, wisdom of QB Jared Goff’s record-setting guaranteed money being questioned.

    Sean McVay’s troops have just four days to regroup after that stunner against the Bucs. Last year’s two wins over the Seahawks were by a combined seven points.

    It was hard to know exactly what to make of the Rams’ ugly loss on Sunday, which started out as a blowout by the Bucs (the Rams trailed 21-0 early) and turned into a shootout that ended 55-40 in Tampa’s favor. We don’t think it means the Rams are a bad team, it just means that like everyone else in the NFC, they’re vulnerable, especially on days when Jared Goff isn’t sharp (three interceptions and one lost fumble.)

    You can imagine Sean McVay waking up Monday morning (assuming he ever went to bed) and thinking to himself, How the hell did that happen? The Rams were heavy favorites in their own building facing a thought-to-be-middling Bucs team … and somehow, L.A. ended up on the wrong end of a 55-40 final. There were many culprits. Jared Goff had four turnovers (despite 500 yards passing). The Rams’ pass rush disappeared after two early sacks. The secondary allowed Chris Godwin to pile up 12 catches for 172 yards. The running game remained an afterthought. Said Todd Gurley after five rushes for 16 yards: “I don’t call the play calls, bro.” Lastly, the offensive line continues to play below expectations. The Rams’ hopes for a late rally were extinguished when Shaquil Barrett blew past veteran right tackle Rob Havenstein for a strip-sack, with Ndamukong Suh returning the ball for a touchdown. A grim performance all the way around.

    The defending NFC champs may be 3-1, but it’s a record that comes with grave concerns on both sides of the ball. The 55 points they allowed to the Buccaneers was a franchise record for points allowed at home, and it’s the second straight season Wade Phillips’ defense has allowed six touchdowns in a game. The first time, of course, was the barnburner against the Chiefs in Week 11 last season. The Rams won that game, though, by a 54-51 score, as Jared Goff was nearly able to match Patrick Mahomes throw for throw. That’s the other problem the Rams have now — Goff’s declining effectiveness and efficiency. In this 55-40 loss, Goff attempted 68 passes, tied for the third-most in a game in NFL history. His 517 yards and two touchdown passes didn’t matter, because his three interceptions and one lost fumble handed Tampa Bay opportunity after opportunity. If the same thing happens against Seattle on Thursday night, Sean McVay’s team might be the most woebegone squad with a winning record in the league.

    Goff–he had to get rid of the ball on that out of sync 4th down play, and then on the 2nd INT got hit like Brees did in the OT NFCC ….so, that happens. Of course, I think his first interception was awful; and so was Brady’s in the supabowl! So everyone is moaning about GOff. Are you kidding? Against that line, with his O line….lol. He was Kurt Warner like. Kurt in Carolina in 2000, in 2000 against KC and against the Saints in 2000 playoff was awful for huge portions of the game….and then Kurt turned it on in that 2000 playff…and so did Goff on SUnday…..down 21, got it back to 7. He kept fighting, and making great throws….re-watch without emotions…he was threading some needles. Yes, he missed to Everett and Cooks (and if he waits a half beat he is dead). So, GOff might have had his best game since the NFCC–damn the stats and people moaning.
