The Rams hired John Streicher in a new title, “coordinator of football strategy”, a source confirmed (
@PaulKuharskyNFL first reported). I believe the role will have to do with game management but still taking shape. Streicher was the Titans’ director of football administration.

I would stress this key point: always block Chris Jones

    You would think.

When the #49ers coaches and staff watch this tape back, they are going to be haunted forever. Multiple instances where there is 1 player with a break down and it makes the difference in crunch time that could have changed the entire outcome. 1 player not doing their job. Happened offensively and defensively. #Chiefs made the plays when they needed to conversely. Such a great game.

Shoutout to @PatrickMahomes for eviscerating the asinine notion that you can’t win a Super Bowl with a QB on a big contract the last two seasons.

He literally had the largest cap hit in the league this year at $37M.

People saying Mahomes is the exception/outlier forgot that Stafford won it two years ago and Brady the year before that so it’s been 5 years since a QB on a rookie contract won it and that was…Mahomes.

    You know what’s REALLY hard?

Winning Super Bowls without a star QB.

    Nick Wagoner@nwagoner
If you want to quibble with Kyle Shanahan’s decision to take the ball first in OT, no problem. Can see both sides of that.

But way too much being made of some players not knowing the new rules. Does that in any way change the idea that they should try to score a touchdown and stop the opponent from doing so? Not even a little bit.

    Bucky Brooks@BuckyBrooks
Cleveland and KC were willing to play man coverage vs. SF. Man eliminates the layups (WR screens) and forces the QB to make tight window throws. Most coaches are scared off by the motions and shifts, but opting for sticky coverage w/some pressure makes life tougher for the play caller and QB.

    Kurt Warner@kurt13warner
No doubt PM2 played great down the stretch & deserved MVP, but if I had to choose someone else for award after watching the tape back it was #TrentMcDuffie, he dominated the WRs of SF (all SF DBs out physical-ed the 49ers & was why they won IMO)!!!

    Dan Orlovsky@danorlovsky7
Chiefs faced Nos. 2, 3, 4 & 6 offenses in the playoffs, which combined to average 28.3 PPG this season.

Averaged 15.8 vs KC in the playoffs. Spags shaved off 12.5 points of 4 of best offenses in NFL

    All time playoff run defensively

Rams are getting there and we are all encouraged by the great 2023 season.

But…to get there, and be a top team, they still have some improving to do. 6 of the teams on that list beat them in 2023.

    I had it Chiefs 24-21.

I believed the 49ers had the better collection of players in volume and system but the Chiefs had superior key players who, if the game remained close, improvise/adapt/overcome.

EG. Chris Jones was on call for pressure when absolutely necessary. It has been that way for much of his career. Uncanny.

And while, I’d like to say this game was a statement that coaches who adapt to their players more than force the player to adapt to their system are superior, I am not sure that’s 100% true.

I will say that I prefer it despite admiring what Shanahan and Lynch have built.

    Jason Cole@JasonCole62
I don’t get the criticism of this decision. I want the ball first. Do you really think deferring is going to impact how the Chiefs approach the situation? Plus, it’s legitimate to be worried about your young QB, even though Purdy generally played a fine game

So the team that won in the trenches lost to the team with the better QB? That’s weird…

    from https://www.turfshowtimes.com/2024/2/12/24070657/rams-2024-free-agency-kevin-dotson-ol

Brad Spielberger previously worked in the front office of the Minnesota Vikings and then for Over The Cap, an important resource in tracking the salary cap resources for teams across the NFL. Each year Speilberger, along with help from Over The Cap, projects potential contract values for each of PFF’s top 100 free agents.

He expects Los Angeles Rams free agent RG Kevin Dotson to garner a four-year contract that will pay him $17.25M annually. In total this potential deal would be worth $69M with $41.25M being fully guaranteed. PFF ranked Dotson as their 23rd overall free agent regardless of position:

Dotson was traded from the Pittsburgh Steelers to the Los Angeles Rams this offseason, and what first appeared like an odd fit should have instead been a signal that head coach Sean McVay was reinventing his offense to much success in 2023. McVay pivoted from a wide-zone rushing attack to a heavy gap scheme, and Dotson was a picture-perfect fit. He has always been a strong pass protector, which carried over, as well.

Check up on your 49ers homies

Them celebrating like that seems a bit premature.

His name is Colton McKivitz. He let Chris Jones go by untouched as he turns to block…nobody at all. That guy is my favorite 49er right now. I also like McCloud, who fumbled the punt.

I wonder if he thought 64 was staying in place instead of pulling? But then 64 seems to be the only 9er who has the defender on the outside?

Either way, if I were an NFL head coach, I would stress this key point: always block Chris Jones. Not just in the redzone in overtime with the game on the line in the super bowl. Always.

    from https://www.latimes.com/sports/story/2024-02-09/49ers-traded-christian-mccaffrey-outbid-rams

LAS VEGAS — Christian McCaffrey will play for the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII on Sunday — partly because the 49ers did not want the star running back to play for the Rams.

Jed York, the 49ers chief operating officer, last week told Bay Area reporters that although the cost of acquiring McCaffrey from the Carolina Panthers in a 2022 trade was steep, the 49ers had to make the move.

The 49ers gave up second-, third- and fourth-round draft picks in the 2023 draft and a fifth-round pick this year. Coach Kyle Shanahan apparently needed convincing from York and general manager John Lynch that although McCaffrey was not a quarterback or pass rusher, the cost was worth it.

“And collectively,” York said, “it was, ‘Do you want him to go to L.A.? This is where we are.’”

I am pretty sure that this is the first time I’ve been happy about losing hundreds of dollars.

    Chefs win.

Chefs cooked up a better meal than the 49ers. In spite of 6 fumbles (1 lost) and an INT.

    9ers lost 2 fumbles.

    Highlights in a bit.

And we have an overtime super bowl.

Sper bowl overtime rules work this way (in just someone doesn’t know). If a team scores on its first possession in OT the other team has a chance to score as well. If the 2nd team scores and it is tied, it becomes sudden death.

Not really watching. I’m kind of in and out on the game. But KC has been shooting its own foot off. 5 fumbles, 1 lost, 1 INT. Yet, they now lead w/ SF in a position to tie it.

if there was such a thing as comeback player during a season award he would have won it hands down – many seem to forget just how bad / ineffective stafford was through the first 8 games, during the 3-5 start, it was more of 2022… then he caught absolute fire.

I believe we’ll see 4-5 teams look into moving up for a QB over the next few months. Teams aren’t excited about next year’s QB class.
