Quick has suddenly become the real deal.

And he’s not even completely polished yet. He’s a better version of the same clumsy kid he was before. To me that means he hasn’t even finished evolving yet.

But very few guessed this was possible—> meaning, THIS: in 2 games, with 2 different qbs, he now has 14 catches for 178 yards. Projected across 16 games (which isn’t a promise, it’s just a way of measuring what he has done so far)…that’s 112 catches for 1424 yards.

Exactly. Which is the problem. Nothing has been fixed.

Well that’s 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, or glass half full/empty.

It means that we know this D can be re-gathered.

And it might be as simple as knowing the system. They tripped up at first with Walton, they trip up at first with Wms. I know this is always supposed to be “Fisher’s defense” but that’s not really the case. Walton brought things that were new and so did Wms.

It’s not dangerous to project. We;re discussing things on a message board. No harm is caused. x My line is, if they did it before, they’re capable of it again. That’s not a promise, but it;s also a factor. These things have many sides to them. I am just speaking for one of them. Either way, we don;t know that the issues with the run defense THIS year are different from or the same as the issues LAST year. It’s like teaching beginning writers. Sometimes when you fix one thing, you end up with a different series of problems. So we don;t know. One thing we DO know. It;s not just personnel. The same guys have done better.

Here’s something to watch for. So far the Fisher Rams are always better after a bye. They really do fix stuff.

I did not have much hope for Davis, and I was vocal about it. Seeing him come through was a pleasant surprise. I think they set up a good game for Davis and he showed good clutch play.

But it was against Tampa, with multiple injuries on their D limiting them. I think they only had 1 original DL starter in the game. So that does not convince me he’s the year-long starter.

A couple of times before now in the last decade, a Rams #3 was forced to play because of injuries. That includes Brock Berlin and Keith Null, who both bombed. Two of them stand out as coming through initially. But IMO only 1 stood up across time as a genuine starter.

First, Bulger in 2002. Warner went out, then the #2 Jamie Martin went out. With Bulger, the Rams went 6-1.

Another was Fitzpatrick in 2005. Bulger went out, then Martin went out again. Martin was injured in the Houston game that year and Fitzpatrick came in, and the Rams got a comeback win out of it. With Fitzpatrick, though, the Rams then went 0-3 after that. I think Linehan was wrong to get rid of him but at the same time, RF couldn’t secure a starting job with one team for a reason. He bounced around for a reason. I don’t event think he’s as good as Hill.

Is Davis a Bulger (starting caliber)? Or a Fitzpatrick (career journeyman)? Or worse (one-game wonder, career back-up)?

The Tampa game does not answer that for me. They set him up to do well, and while he came through, how will he look against NFC west defenses after teams have film on him and can gameplan him?

I understand them going back to Hill.

If Davis continues to come in and do well, then, it will be real interesting next summer, because they will probably add a qb in the draft too, regardless whether Davis keeps coming through, and regardless whether Bradford shows he’s back.

Oh, and, to me, beating Favre’s record in college doesn’t mean much in the era of the college spread. The spread elevates all kinds of qbs into being stats producing machines. Many of those same qbs can’t translate it to the pros. So far Davis has for one game, which is welcome, but it’s not the final say for me.

Pretty much the same defense started out poorly last year, too. It was the main culprit in the Atlanta, Dallas, and SF losses last year. In the Dallas game, they had allowed 86 yards rushing by the end of the 4th quarter.

Then halfway through the season, they became the best run defense in the league.

    So this is nothing new.

on offense. quick i think gets better as the season goes on. that one drop was a really bad one but with more experience and confidence i bet he regularly makes that catch.

i like stacy, but i still think tre mason is the guy. he hopefully has the explosiveness that stacy lacks. i’m not a believer in cunningham.

and when stedman and robinson get up to speed, i think this offense could really make strides this season.

bigger and better things in store!

One thing I didn’t like in the game was the heavy blitzing. The Bux ate it up, both throwing and running.

Wow. A crappy return and a penalty knock the special teams to a “B”? Four-for-four FGs, TWO BLOCKED KICKS, and they get docked a full grade. Special teams kinda won this game. Not that a B is so bad, but I thought they kicked ass.

Yeah, Gordon’s take is an odd one. Not just special teams, either.

On the one hand, he’s right that squeezing out a victory against a beat-up Bux team doesn’t answer all the Rams questions.

On the other hand, he seems kind of picky and even a little pissy.

What the Bucs fans are saying NOW (favorite quotes)

That’s a freaking 3rd string QB…nough said! If Tampa can’t pressure and rattle a 3rd string QB then we freaking blow! We are officially the worst team in the NFL in my book! Lost to a backup QB…now a 3rd string QB? Get the freak out of here!!

I seriously wish we weren’t playing Thursday night! We are about to be embarrassed on National TV!

Gruden looks like a GOD right about now.

Backup QB and 3rd string QB…

Let’s just have a kicker under center, no need for touchdowns.

    I can’t stand McClown.

McCown was good. The OL was good. Rainey was good. But for the second straight week we let a back-up QB look like Peyton Manning.

Lovie was completely out coached. His defensive game plan sucked today and two weeks in a row a back-up comes in with limited weapons and slaps his Tampa 2 bullcrap around.

Can’t blame the refs.. They gave many gifts thruout the game

    We’ll see.

We haven’t seen Davis yet against an NFC west defense.

But here’s another consideration–who would be better coming off the bench in a game?

    Hill, I think.

Sorry, complete joke on my part!

Well it’s a very good one.

But you picked the wrong guy. (Or…the right guy, I guess.)

    I am fairly anatomy ignorant.

I was ready to fall for it. I thought, okay, he made a bad throw cause of the quad, maybe if you check for throwing strength……

    So…good one.

Now I am not THAT bad, mind you. When I got gout, I knew it was in my foot, and that it had to do with not eating enough red meat and seafood. But that’s all I knew.

This just proves it has been a fake injury all along.

Fisher: “Yeah–we’re checking out Shaun’s shoulder to see if he can go.”

Schefter: “I thought it was his quad?”

    Fisher: “Uh…yeah–quad..shoulder…either one.”

    Uh…no.

Didn’t you know that you check a qb’s shoulder TO check the quad. See if the qb can step up and throw without pain in the shoulder, then the quad is good to go.

Guys, this is football 101 stuff. I swear the lack of football knowledge on this board is embarrassing sometimes.

Thanks for the info, and the gracious way of presenting it x

Now. Is that right? If so why? How does a quad directly have an effect on the shoulder?

Or are you messing with us?

I am that anatomy ignorant. Every new type of injury there is, the first time I hear of it, I have to look it up. So if you’re joking I can’t even tell. x

Instead, he tucks the ball down, tries to scramble and runs himself into a sack. I am hoping that getting starter reps and expecting to be a starter will have him more ready this week if he has to play but I’m concerned. I’m still hoping for the best but Davis really needs to speed things up between the ears and get the ball out quicker.

Here’s a play that bothered me with Austin Davis:

    z

This play ultimately results in a sack because Davis hesitates and doesn’t pull the trigger. He does a good job on this play of sliding in the pocket to buy time and isn’t sacked by the guy right behind him in the picture. However, my issue is that he has Chad Greenway stuck between the receiver on the drag and the receiver on the dig. He essentially has both guys open. He can’t hesitate here. He needs to trust what he’s seeing and throw the ball.

As you can see here, everyone is handled except Floyd and the safety. Long is laying on his stomach after whiffing on Floyd and doesn’t make much effort to get up. If Long had executed the block, Joseph pulls through and should be able to blow up the safety. I see nothing but green grass behind him. Everybody else executed their assignment and every player is blocked and handled except for the two mentioned above.

    Here’s the second run:

    xx

On this play, it’s more or less a straight off tackle run. You have Long reaching and down blocking Floyd, Saffold and Wells doubling the other DT, Joseph pulling around to hit the safety, Harkey kicking out to seal the LB on the edge, Kendricks power blocking the RDE, and Cook hitting the second level to seal the Mike.

    Here’s how it plays out:

    z

    x

I think the issue is pretty obvious. Harkey doesn’t succeed in the wham block. He gets stood up by the LB and fails to seal him which allows the LB to turn him and trip Austin up as Austin hits the seam. Austin ends up wiggling through the seam for a few yards but had Harkey executed the block more effectively, this is a huge play.

Also, it is only the second game of the season. How can they be starting their 3rd QB of the season?

    Ain’t THAT the question.

According to the best scientific explanation I can come up with, it’s the curse, I guess.

THOMAS: Quinn averages just under $11 million a year under the new deal, which isn’t exorbitant for a star defensive end these days. But he gets roughly two-thirds of that money — $41.2 million — as guaranteed dollars.

That pretty much sums up our discussion.

Lighter than some in avg. dollars per year…high in guaranteed money.

I am looking forward to seeing how it works out structurally, year by year.

Yeah I discussed those things about that contract in a different thread. I even pointed out that if you subtract the 17.5 in the final phoney year, it still avgs. 13.7 M or so.

I did say that probably what Quinn wanted was the guaranteed money upfront.

But even given that, an 11 M annual avg. is surprising. That’s an interesting trade-off. More guaranteed upfront for a lower annual avg.

As invader already pointed out in a different thread, that makes Quinn a very interesting player. He didn’t care about the showboat “total contract” comparison with other players, and opted instead for the upfront money.

    >It is the more the real money vs fluff. Annual salary is in someways meaningless.

    Ag we;re not really disagreeing.

Part of my point was that it’s fluff v. real money.

What surprises is me is that a player knows that and acts accordingly.

Watt for example didn’t act like he knew that.

In fact Watt is the norm.

This is the discussion from before, which parallels this one:

    http://theramshuddle.com/topic/rams-and-quinn-close-to-contract-extension/

one advantage the Rams have, besides guys wanting to play for Fisher (and in RQ’s case, Waufle too), is that they frontload–guys REALLY ARE getting that money, upfront.

i’m sure robert realizes this. instead of going for the headline “record contract”.

I think you’re right that RQ wants the real money upfront, and I would be surprised if it had a trick money backloaded final year the way Watts deal does.
