Kyle Orton is really probably the best backup among that group.

    Orton retired.

Except for the secondary they weren’t key players. Though they also have depth I think.

    Rams-related notes:

Another–Darian Stewart starts in the Ravens secondary. Their secondary coach? Spags.

Actually there’s a story there because apparently Spags brought the Rams injury curse with him.

Because of injuries, 7 different players started at corner for the Ravens this year, and 4 different players started at safety. Most teams don’t even carry 7 corners. I don’t know how many different secondary combinations they fielded, but it was a lot. All things considered they played well tonight against the Steelers 2nd ranked passing offense. In fact in tonight’s game, only 1 of the starting DBs was the week 1 starter (Stewart) and he missed time during the season too.

Arians play calling has been predictable and horrible all day. Down by 13 and you continue to run the ball over and over again on first down and do these little dump off passes.

I’d be happy with Petty…..and I wouldn’t expend too much angst if they took him the 2nd round. I don’t think he would have to be around too awfully long to be better than Davis or Hill, and would probably make a nice understudy to Bradford. I lamented the fact that the Rams didn’t take Garappolo last May, and I don’t see a lot of difference between Petty and him. NFL ready? No. But I think he has what it takes to be an effective NFL quarterback. If the Rams had one of those this season, they might be getting ready for a game this weekend.

Jim Thomas on The Rams and 2015 Draft

Brendan Marks posted on January 02, 2015

    http://www.insidestl.com/insideSTLcom/STLSports/STLRams/tabid/137/articleType/ArticleView/articleId/15900/Jim-Thomas-on-The-Rams-and-2015-Draft.aspx

St. Louis Post-Dispatch Rams beat writer Jim Thomas joined The Ryan Kelley Morning After on Friday and discussed some of the top prospects in April’s NLF Draft. He also gave his early opinion on what he believes the Rams will do in the off-season to bolster the roster.

Have a pulse on what the Rams are thinking? In general, it’s not considered nearly as good of a draft as it was last year. A guy like (Marcus Roberson), Les Snead thought it most years he’d be a fifth-round draft pick. But last year’s draft was so deep he went undrafted. Jeff Fisher said one of the reasons they were willing to give up mid-to-late round picks for (safety Mark Barron), they were factoring in the draft.

    On quarterbacks:
Most people think that if (Jameis) Winston and (Marcus) Mariotta are gone, you should wait for the second round.

On Rams: Who knows how they feel yet? I don’t even know if they’ve cut down their pool of draft prospects yet. They start out with maybe 1,500 guys and wittle the list down. They’re still pretty early in the process.

    On Rams’ off-season priority:
Let’s just say they stay at (the 10th pick). We’ve seen this lately where people that were tackles in college come in and play guard. Maybe the Rams could find something like that at 10 overall. There’s no doubt they need help at the interior of the line. Say they did something like that in the first round, then look for a quarterback in round two, round three. That would seem the place to pick one of those guys.

Carden’s team lost to Florida 28-20.

    His stats:

    34-66 427 yards 2 T.D.s 2 Ints.

Not much of a scrambler or runner.

Rushed 9 times for -14 yards.

His last interception was pretty terrible—in the redzone he lofted a floater at the endzone to a guy well covered. Easy pick.

Just saw the highlights–didn’t watch the game.

I didn’t come away all pro Carden-y. But it was just one game and one against a top 10 D so…I can’t claim anything one way or another.

Well I thought I would be a good guy and contribute to the college qb thread.

You know, put that ole eagle eye to good use. See what all those pent up scouting instincts could come up with, watching this Carden guy.

So I get the game at the half and…right now, it’s a defensive struggle.

Usually I like those but this is one of those rare times when I turn on the tv to watch a college qb.

    Interesting how this works out.

Here are the present-day Rams who were on the roster before 2012:

    Tim Barnes
    Chase Reynolds
    Robert Quinn
    Lance Kendricks
    Jake McQuaide
    Sam Bradford
    Rodger Saffold
    Eugene Sims
    James Laurinaitis
    Chris Long

Compare that to Seattle. How many players right now on their roster were there before Carroll arrived. It’s:

    Jon Ryan (P)
    Brandon Mebane

Now compare that to SF. How many before Harbaugh:

    Michael Crabtree
    Frank Gore
    Vernon Davis
    Anthony Davis
    Alex Boone
    Mike Iupati
    Joe Staley
    Justin Smith
    Ahmad Brooks
    NaVorro Bowman
    Patrick Willis
    Andy Lee (P)

I doubt they can count on that. So, they get one, and if both Jones and Rhaney come through, they’re deep there for a change.

My top 5 OLines are Seattle Seahawks, Denver Broncos, Philadelphia Eagles, New England Patriots, and Green Bay Packers.

    I agree on Green Bay.

I think Seattle is an at-best average OL. They get by with it because of the combination of Lynch, the defense, and always being at the very bottom of the league in pass attempts. And, btw, in spite of being at the bottom of the league in pass attempts, they are also near the bottom of the league in sack percentage. That’s a bad combination.

I think Denver was better last year.

New England I am not decided on yet. They seem to have a lot of chaos on the line this year.

The Eagles? Maybe it was the injuries…Kelce, Herrmans, and Mathis all missed time.

    http://articles.philly.com/2014-12-23/sports/57320746_1_chip-kelly-center-jason-kelce-first-team-all-pro-last-season

A year ago at this time, the offensive line was one of the Eagles’ greatest strengths. It was a dominating unit that helped LeSean McCoy run away with the league rushing title and afforded Nick Foles enough pocket security to lead the league in almost every pertinent passing category. The five starters didn’t miss a single game.

That hasn’t been the case this season. Including right tackle Lane Johnson’s four-game PED suspension, the Eagles’ linemen have missed 22 starts. Left guard Evan Mathis missed seven with a knee sprain. Right guard Todd Herremans has been on injured reserve since early November with a torn bicep. Center Jason Kelce missed four games after needing surgery to repair a sports hernia.

The Eagles have had four of their five starters back together for the last six games. The only one missing has been Herremans, who has been replaced by Andrew Gardner.

But offensive-line coach Jeff Stoutland’s unit hasn’t played nearly as well as it did last year. Jason Peters, a six-time Pro Bowler, probably is going to be in the Hall of Fame some day. But this has not been one of his better seasons.

sometimes i get an inkling that a lot of fans
think “you dont take a center in the first round”

from an earlier post, now on page 2

I look at the top 12 graded guards and top 12 graded centers according to PFF, and check into how they’re acquired.

    CENTER: 4 lower 1st round picks (18th, 21st, 29th, 31st); 2 2nd round picks; a 5th round pick; 2 6th round picks; 1 low-market free agent (avg. 0.795 a year), and 1 converted guard/ronin type.

I will say this about center. If someone is taken after round 2 or comes in as a ronin, usually they develop on the bench before starting. So this list says that if you need a center NOW, you need to use a low 1st or a 2nd round pick.

Fisher made it a point to present Cunningham and the entire kickoff return team with a game ball after putting the finishing touches on a season in which Cunningham led the NFC in kickoff return average at 27.5 yards per attempt. That total was fifth in the NFL.

“As far as our special teams are concerned, we gave the game balls Monday morning to the entire kickoff return team and Benny for leading the NFC in kickoff returns,” Fisher said. “I thought it was an outstanding effort.”

For the season, Cunningham finished with 35 returns for 963 yards with a long of 75 yards. Although he’s not the fastest or shiftiest returner you’ll find, Cunningham proved successful by being decisive and capable of shedding tackles when defenders didn’t wrap him up.
    =================================

Fisher said at one point that K.O. coverage teams were being built to handle speed and elusiveness. BC had some of both, but he also had power. So as the K.O. teams became smaller and faster, he brought some physical power to it.

    Return touchdowns Rams’ biggest regret

    By Nick Wagoner

    http://espn.go.com/blog/st-louis-rams/post/_/id/15160/return-touchdowns-rams-biggest-regret

EARTH CITY, Mo. — In @#$%& his team’s performance in 2014, St. Louis Rams coach Jeff Fisher ran down a list of things he felt his team did well during the course of the season.

As Fisher discussed the performance of the defense, he pointed to that group’s ability to keep opponents out of the end zone. And then he pointed to the thing that often seemed to cancel out much of the good that the defense was able to accomplish.

“Our defense, in points allowed, I think was fourth or fifth at 17.7 points per game,” Fisher said. “If you exclude the returns.”

Ah, yes, the returns. When all was said and done in the Rams’ 6-10 campaign, they were on the wrong end of 10 opponent returns for touchdown either from special teams or while the Rams were on offense. Those 10 returns for touchdowns, usually coming in the form of interceptions brought back, were the most in the NFL this season.

Making matters worse, eight of those returns came in the second half of games when the result was usually still hanging in the balance. It doesn’t take John Nash to figure out the math on how those returns often influenced the outcome of many of the Rams’ close losses.

The Rams had an interception returned for a touchdown in a three-point loss to Dallas, gave up two return scores in what turned into a six-point loss to Philadelphia and coughed up a fumble that was returned for a score in a three-point loss to San Diego. There’s no way to know how those games would have played out otherwise but that’s at least three examples of games there for the taking were it not for such miscues.

“Our offense, on the other hand, we only scored 18 points per game,” Fisher said. “When you’re allowing 10 returns for touchdowns, then you have a point differential of less than a point — you’re going to lose some football games. That’s kind of what happened to us. In our five returns for touchdowns, we won four of those five games. It’s not new news, it’s just reality of the National Football League. It’s hard to overcome those kinds of things. There’s one team in the playoffs right now that is minus in takeaway/giveaway and that would be the [Indianapolis] Colts. Everybody else that’s minus is watching this weekend.”

The timing of those mistakes also made a big difference in games that turned out more lopsided than they really were as a direct result of the costly giveaways.

In losses at Seattle and Arizona and at home against San Francisco, the Rams were down by seven or less in the fourth quarter in all three games only to have turnovers returned for touchdowns that immediately expanded the deficit to a point the Rams could not make up.

“It’s not only when they take place, it’s against who that they’re taking place in close games,” Fisher said. “Those things, ball security’s got to be very, very important to us.”

Until the Rams can have an offense good enough to overcome such mistakes, ball security must be not just a top priority but the top priority.

Most spread QBs tend to not do well for more than a year or two when moving up to the NFL.

Here is Fisher on scouting spread qbs:

http://theramshuddle.com/topic/fisher-1230-vid-link/ the quarterback play at the college level is different than the quarterback play at our level. So, if you’re going to go out and draft a quarterback, you have to be certain that he can handle the pro-style offense…..Quarterbacks, as you know if you watch the (college) game, they’re looking over and they’re getting the call from the sideline and they’re running the play. There’s not a lot of communication on the line of scrimmage, there’s not adjustments, there’s not Mike IDs. There’s not reads, there’s not the things that we ask them to do.

Okay, if you look at the red-bolded bit…you know who he’s describing? Bradford in 2010. Exact same thing.

    ….

    Avatar photozn
    Moderator

that being said, during the pre-season, ALL 3 QBs threw downfield far more than ever before. It’s clear
there was a deliberate attempt from Schotty/Fisher…to push the ball farther down field.

THat, AND, in fact, they weren’t as shy about doing that before than some apparently think they were.

In 2014 they had the receivers. How do you push the ball downfield when your main WRs are Amendola and Gibson? AND YET…they did it. In 2012, according to PFF, Bradford was 7th in the league in attempts over 20 yards.

In 2014, if you combine Davis and Hill, the Rams were … drumroll… 7th.

I think this thing about Bradford being shy about throwing long is just simply myth. Really. The numbers don’t back it.

BUT I absolutely DO think that if Bradford had played this year there would have been even more of that. And certainly more completions.

Oh and good to see you Sun. !

I am not sure I am crazy about boudreau/fisher’s
    leaning toward old-grizzled-vet-injured-linemen.
Linemen on the downside of their careers.

That was just last year, mate. You go back through history and look at both the Titans and Falcons lines and there’s no grizzled factor. Heck in 2006, Fisher was starting 2 2nd year OTs.

So let’s not exaggerate on the basis of one year.

AND the 3 cornerstones of this OL…Saffold, Barksdale, Robinson are not “grizzled.”

AND there are good LOTs in the league who have more years than LOng. He’s just at the end of his injury rope.

So I see no such “leaning.” I think that’s just overgeneralizing on the basis of one year, which is mostly about injuries anyway.

I mean how many teams handle injuries to 4 centers.

i dont think Wells was ever
    a particularly effective player for
    any length of time.

Well depends on what you mean by “length of time.”

He plays well when he comes back for the 2nd half of 2012.

He plays well enough for the 1st half of 2013. Or, he’s not the major problem in the 1st 4 games, when the line struggled some. But then I always thought that those 1st 4 games was due to the offense as a whole–they were playing a spread with young receivers PLUS their feature back could not run and everyone knew it (Richardson).

Long got injured all up. But he did not start out poorly. He actually grades out well for most of 2013. He was much MORE effective once they went to a play-action offense and away from that gawd-forsaken Richardson + baby receivers in a spread offense, but still.

If you mean Wells got hurt a lot, yeah he did.

But then. Their are only 2 years in the last 12 where the Rams OL is NOT hurt a lot–2003 and 2010. So is that Wells or the Rams OL curse?

Demoff btw says that OL injuries are the Rams achilles heel.

in reply to: all 4 centers hurt? and other things about the 2014 OL #15297
    Avatar photozn

    Okay something else.

What about Long and Saffold and Barksdale?

Long was also injured in the Chiefs game, same as Wells.

Saffold ALSO injured in the Chiefs game.

So that’s Oct. 26, Black Sunday.

Now using PFF grades (fwiw), when did Barksdale become a problem?

According to their grades, he has 2 spurts where he plays poorly and gets consecutive negative grades. Weeks 8-10, and weeks 14-17 (with a brief “decent game” interval in week 16).

So it starts in week 8. The Chiefs game.

Here’s the thing about that. If the rest of the line struggles, it is hard for one player to play above that. He’s not in sync with them, they cut back the things they can do so he’s more exposed, he gets less help, he has to help out more and so gets over-stretched, and so on.

Actually in weeks 2-5 he’s graded pretty highly.

That all makes it look like the KC game killed the OL.

After the KC game, it went like this:

LOT. Long out. Robinson shifts to LOT. He was supposed to be the LOG this year.
LOG. Saffold hurt, plays with a bad shoulder the rest of the way. Was supposed to be the ROG with GR at LOG. Is not the same after the injury. According to PFF grades, only has 2 good games after KC.
OC. Wells–elbow injured in KC game. As I say in the post above, all 4 centers hurt in 2014. Man. Good luck coming back from THAT. This means they have a rookie at LOT and a banged-up center…which is just a recipe for disaster. Wells played below average all year. I don’t think he ever really recovered from his illness over the summer (an infection that got him hospitalized).
ROG. Saffold was a great OG in 2013, and then ends up being a mediocre LOG in 2014. Joseph was never supposed to play.
ROT. Barksdale plays ever snap and near as we know was not injured. BUT he has a stretch of bad games starting in week 8 (Chiefs game). Before that he had one below avg. game (week 6, 1st SF game).

    So… theory:

Barksdale and Saffold were both fine until Saffold was hurt, Wells was hurt, Long was hurt, GR shifted to LOT, and Joseph had to start.

For the future this probably means Barksdale is fine, Saffold is fine, GR improves in the off-season (in fact the odds are against that NOT happening).

Wells is probably on the wrong side of old and injured, and Long probably isn’t back.

That means they have 3 pieces in place. That’s a lot actually. The days of year to year 5-man OL continuity died with free agency and the cap. Having 3 (if they sign Barksdale) is good.

I say, with all that, they not only have a good chance of fixing the OL, they have a chance to field a very good one.
