The football Gods are mysterious.  Take a QB like Foles.  WTF was Nick Foles?

He had one of the greatest years in history in 2013 as an Eagle.  I mean 27 TDs and 2 INTs.  Rating of 119.   Also, 2017 goes 3 and 0 in the playoffs and wins a Ring.

But then his other years are all more or less mediocre.

I like the fact that a guy like him or a Brad Johnson or a Doug Williams can win a ring though.   Gives every team hope.

Only saw bout five minutes of hi-lites.

Best football play by far imho was the Rose short TD run.

Some of the Perkins and McCutcheon stuff looked fun, but…Perkins did not look like a starter to me, and McCutcheon looked….lucky.   I dunno.

Dick Vermeil got into the Hall Of Fame with one Super Bowl win, and one Super Bowl loss. Do we know any other coach with that kind of record? w v

Here’s what Vermeil also did. He took 3 losing teams and turned all 3 into playoff teams. McVay in contrast inherited a lot of talent. In 2017, he had way way more talent than Vermeil did in 97 with the Rams, or initially with either the Eagles or the Chiefs. Bearing in mind that a couple of those seasons was back when there were 14 games, in all 3 cases combined, rebuilding from scratch meant 2 years each of non-winning records. His first 6 years combined from all 3 teams average out to a 5.4/10 record. I like McVay. He and Vermeil are obviously the top 2 coaches since I started following the Rams. But McVay’s record, so far, does not include losing years from a rebuild. Even Demoff openly said in 2017 that they were not in a rebuild. It’s just a factor.

    All true.

But for me, DV is maybe a ‘borderline’ Hall of Famer.   I just dont know if i would have voted for him.   I dunno.

One of the attributes of that 99 team was how ‘smooth’ and easy they made it look against all the bad teams they played.    About 13 out of 16 games were against bad teams as I recall, but still, they won in such a fluid, smooth, easy way.   That play is a perfect example.   It was often a Big-Easy-Spectacle.

Until they played teams like the Bucs or Titans.   And thats where they showed what ‘else’ that team had.  Toughness or heart or whatever you wanna call it.

And he has the signature Rams RB thing that both Henderson and Akers have. Unusual contact balance.

    ==

I think I like him better than Akers or Henderson.

I base that on watching over 90 seconds of youtube hi-lite film.

If he turns out to be a fumbler I will disavow every word of this post.

.. but how do you suspend him a year if predetermined protocols say 6 games? it’s all very sad.

    ==

Its a mess, alright.    I cringe every time i hear one of the talking-heads discuss whether it should be six games, eight games, seventeen games, etc, etc.

Like….how weird does your brain have to be, to think any of this stuff can be reduced to this or that amount of ‘games’ ?

I thought Hitler should have gotten a two-year suspension, btw.  Zooey, too.

I have no idea what ‘justice’ looks like in a case that does not go to trial, and where two grand juries decided there was not enough evidence to indict, and where we dont know all the facts…..but…where 24 women have prettymuch told the same story.

How in the world do you add up all the knowns and unknowns in a case like this, and then do all the human-algebra and then turn it into “X number of game suspensions.”

The whole, entire, situation is post-modernly-surreal.

    Thats all i got.

i like morris. we’ll see. not sure how good he really is as a coordinator cuz he really hasn’t had much experience actually doing it. i think he pretty much went from position coach straight to head coach with a couple of stints as a coordinator here and there. but every coach needs talent to work with.

Yeah, I just dont know.    I mean, how could any DC ‘not’ have a great year, with Donald, Ramsey AND Von Miller out there.    The Rams D does not win a ring without Von Miller imho.   He was the key change last year, not Morris.

Now, if the Rams Defense is great again, without Von Miller, then I’ll be impressed with Morris.   We’ll see.

… Rams are working very hard to sell Morris and their former RB coach, now TE coach Thomas Brown as future head coaches. It seems very conscious and concerted.

Oh yeah.  Its understandable, nice, and cringe-ee at the same time.

The Brian Flores class-action racial-discrim. lawsuit is still rippling through the dark corridors of the NFL, much like the concussion issue did a while back.

The NFL’s motto should be: Optics not Substance.

wv NFC on-paper-rankings at this stage:

    1 Bucs

    2 Rams / 49ers

    3 Lions

    4 Packers

    5 Saints / Vikings

The top 8 or so, NFC teams are bunched.  An injury here, and injury there changes everything.    I ‘do’ think the Bucs have built the best team on paper, at this point.

The comment about Mahomes is interesting because I was thinking something similar about Kyler.   I watched a vid of K. Murray and the talking heads were going on and on and on about one play he made where he ran around and made a ton of defenders miss and then he launched a strike to a WR.   And the talking heads were saying he’s a ‘generational’ talent and very few humans could do such a thing etc.

And i used to be the same way.  I’d see a Michael Vick play, or an RG3 play or Lamar Jackson, etc and I’d think, “OMG, this is a great QB, and they are gonna win a gazillion super bowls and the Rams will never have anyone like that…”

But then I started  wising up.   Because I started to understand, Yes, those guys can make spectacular plays.  Incredible highlight plays.   But what did they do on…the next play.  And the next.  And the next.   We know what Tom Brady will do on the next play.  And the next.  He’ll carve you up.  And so will Stafford.

So…I’m still impressed by the super-wild-keystone-cops plays.   But I’m wiser now.  I see that what matters MORE is can you make the clutch plays on third down, against TOP defenses, in the playoffs.  Over and over.  Clutch play after clutch play.   Cuz thats what it usually takes.

I doubt Kyler Murray can do that.   I kinda doubt Lamar Jackson can do it, either, but I dunno.  Mahomes has already won a Ring.   But the league may be catching up to him just a bit.

I’ll take Stafford over any of the spectacular-QBs at this point.  As long as he’s healthy.

I still like QBs that can move, but the consistent pocket accuracy in the clutch has to be there.  And its rare to have it ‘all’  — Like Roger Staubach.  Or Steve Young.
