I wonder if computer scientists will be the ones to unlock this mystery.

Will they ever be truly able to create a “conscious” AI and actually know they’ve done it and not some sort of imitation of the real thing. That would be an incredible thing. It couldn’t just look and sound like consciousness, but would have to be real. And I would imagine the complexity of such a thing is unimaginable.

I believe they will solve it some day but not anytime soon. And that is if funding is there for research and we don’t destroy ourselves until then. Big “if”.

I don’t believe they will find it by breaking things down though–like a physicist sort of does–looking for some elemental “thing”. It seems to be more of a process than a thing. And that’s what makes it so tough, of course.

I followed the game on a very delayed radio broadcast, the NFL.Com highlights and the chat room so take that for what it’s worth.

    But here are some thoughts:

First of all–I miss Steve Savard on the radio broadcasts. He was very good. J.B. Long is just another guy–but Savard was really good. Farr is reduced to sideline reporter. So he’s there, but he isn’t. Maurice Jones-Drew is the other guy and he is…okay. Nothing special. Not terrible. I’d rather have a former Ram there.

NFL.Com is okay for some stats and highlights.

The chat room was fine. Ag brought his “A” game as usual and “as usual” ZN could barely contain his cheerleading efforts. Explaining away the dismal time of possession–ZN insisted that the Rams “wanted to get a look at the defensive guys”. When Goff fumbled he explained that this was simply a “new passing style they were trying out”, something that LOOKS like a fumble but would have gone for a touchdown if only Quick was where he was supposed to be at the time. The penalties were for “pre-season” infractions–just stuff the NFL was trying out and would not have been penalties during the regular season.

I was brilliant of course and correctly predicted the Rams would win this one 21-20 when the last three seconds were running off the clock. It’s a gift I have for these kind of things. I can’t explain it.

As for the team–I do agree with ZN about the running game–very impressive. Mason picked the right time for his meltdown. The Rams are loaded.

Wish I could say that about wide receiver–but once again–Quick shows his inconsistency. I hope the young guys come through.

The secondary has me a bit concerned but Troy Hill had a nice game I hear. They need some guys to step up.

Next game is the BIG pre-season game, I guess. #3. Good test.

They certainly need to make sure that Keenum is ready because he is obviously going to be the starter for a little while. I expect him to play the first half. Goff the second. Mannion will see some more time in Game #4.

Got to this thing late. Listening to radio broadcast. Sounds like Goff is not doing so hot. Defense is iffy. Not much improvement from last week. Hopefully they play Goff in the second half.

I think they will take a step back.

Just the transition from JL to Ogeltree will take some time. Then you have Quinn’s questionable back–somewhat thinner perhaps on the line, certainly thinner at DB. I think it will be a transition year.

But the offense HAS to be better…right? So that may help the defense.

I think that Trump may be doing something even worse.

He’s sort of hijacking a progressive message, at least on some issues–and in the future when a true progressive brings up things like trade or companies leaving the United States not being rewarded for that, people will roll their eyes and say, “Trump.”

When he says some of the same things Bernie says–lobbyists, etc. he may be somewhat killing that message by making it come from the mouth of a crazy guy. Maybe this is even intentional. Maybe he is a Clinton plant. Probably not–he’s probably just using what works for him.

    But you have to wonder.

Pre-season is such a difficult thing to judge.

That doesn’t mean I don’t reach quick emotional conclusions about what I’m watching. So, having said that, here are some thoughts:

I wonder why the Rams didn’t give Mannion more of a chance. I get it–they loved Goff–and they see him ultimately reaching a level that Mannion will never sniff. But last year would have offered many opportunities to take a better look at him. They didn’t. He looks very good–yes–against back-ups. Still…

This kid Spruce looks like the real deal. He is what I’m looking for–someone to make the tough catches. Reliability. I like him.

Cooper showed flashes. Has moves. Gotta make that catch though.

Michael Thomas? Bit disappointing. Only one game. We’ll see.

Higbee? Love him. Could be the best tight end they’ve had in years. Exciting.

Goff? Good things, bad things. I’d like to see more of that pocket movement he’s so famous for. He didn’t have much pocket awareness. His passes looked very good though. Has a good arm.

The secondary? Worst unit on the field last night. Horrible. I hope they get that fixed or it will be a very long year.

Lots of back-ups on defense. Hard to tell anything.

I was thinking last night about distractions: the move, new stadium, Hard Knocks, new faces.

How will that play out this year? Hard to see them getting double digit victories in a year like this. I can see another 6-10 to 8-8 kind of year. And because of all the distractions–yes–Fisher will get another pass.

Loved the rookie running back…#36. Can’t recall his name right now.

Tre Mason? Bye-bye. Time to move on .

    Bennie also looked great.

First thing I want to see: NO INJURIES.

After that, in no particular order:

Wide receivers: show me something. Something–anything.

Higbee: I want to see the anti-Jared Cook. I want to see someone who is awake on every snap.

Robinson: Do NOT get any of the QBs killed. Consistency, my friend. Consistency.

Ogletree: I want to see him pick up where he left off.

Goff: Just don’t look like Foles. I get you’re a rookie but don’t horrify us with any sort of meltdown play. If you can do what Wentz did I’ll take it.

GZ: consistency. I don’t need you to kill 64 yard field goals. Just make the ones you should make.

    Is Quinn even playing?

Sit out Gurley. No point in playing him here. Gotta find another guy to replace Mason anyway.

I actually suspected the witness who identified Naz. But who knows? There is at least the possibility that Naz really did it.

I don’t mind the Turturro skin stuff. I feel for the guy. I get mild skin stuff and it sucks. Having to live with that? No thanks.

I’ve heard the show described as a “horror story of the system” and that’s a pretty good description. Once you’re in it there are no good choices. It’s about survival. It’s cold. Uncaring. Pretty horrible. The show gives that a very realistic feel.

    Great show.

    King of the North?

    Hah! Nice try.

I want nothing less than the Iron Throne.

    I am a uniter not a divider.

Except for the Wildings. I don’t want their rapists coming over.

And I’ll get the Iron Throne because I’m going to build a bigger wall. It’ll be a great wall. The Wildings will build it. And I’ll have dragons because women will not be allowed to have dragons–and they’ll be great dragons–the best dragons.

And I’ll have the best advisers that money can buy to tell me what I want to hear and confirm what I already believe.

And we will build a good relationship with Dorne and it’ll be a great relationship–the best. And if our allies like Lady Mormont don’t like it they are OUT. She’s a spoiled brat anyway. They gotta pay their fair share–it’s all I’m saying.

And one final thing–we will no longer worry about Winter or the White Walkers because we have the best military in Westeros and they have made a lot of mistakes and the commanders suck but I’ll have great leaders, the best leaders, and we will defeat them and end their reign of terror forever.

And speaking of Winter…where’s all the global warming? Sounds ridiculous right now, huh?

    It’s a hoax, folks. A hoax.

    So anyway—that’s the plan.

The Socialist Alternative is a possible source for future, leftist leaders.

    http://www.socialistalternative.org/

They have an elected official in Seattle (Kshama Sawant) at the moment. Hoping they can expand their presence quickly and broadly.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kshama_Sawant

It will be interesting to see how a socialist movement will do going forward. In the past, anything that was “anti-capitalism” was “anti-America” and there was no traction to be gained.

While Bernie is no true socialist, he wasn’t afraid of the word either–and he did pretty well.

So we’ll see what the future holds.

I still think it’s an uphill battle but it may not be so far to the top of the hill now.

It’s a good question. There will be plenty of politicians willing to pick up the movement and use it for their personal success. But are they real? Clinton has claimed to be “progressive”. Well, now you get into defining what “progressive” even means.

There is no other “Bernie” out there. Bernie had a legitimacy that was built over many years–his lifetime really. So what you’ll have, I think, are politicians who are “progressive” on some issues–not so much on others.

The closest to Bernie, I have seen, may be Dennis Kucinich but he’s no real option.

I hear certain names–as future leaders of the movement, with Warren at the top of the list. Sherrod Brown gets some love. I’m skeptical that either really fits the bill. Tulsi Gabbard is clearly trying to hop on board but there is some skepticism involving her as well.

There will not be the level of trust that came with Bernie.

But let’s be honest–if Chomsky ran he would have zero chance. There has to be some way to reach out to less progressive voters on some level or it will be a marginalized movement. It may need a Tulsi Gabbard or Elizabeth Warren to move bits and pieces forward. That may be where its future success lies.

I’m sure there are many progressive leaders out there. But within the current strong two party system and a media that holds up the “system”, it will be difficult to get traction. How would Cornell West do? Many in the black community can’t stand him.

    No easy answers here.

But if the movement is to go anywhere, it will have to be in bits and pieces for now. It will have to be small victories. The political reality is just stacked against it right now.

The anger in the nation may be led easier by populism than progressivism. And populists can have all sorts of motives and beliefs. See Trump. No one would call him progressive.

But sadly, there is no progressive like Bernie that we’ll see in our lifetime.

I’m sure there are more Jill Steins. I never heard of her before the election year.

    They are out there.

    Maybe we’ll be surprised.

Rams kicker Greg Zuerlein just nailed a 64-yard field goal in the Coliseum.

Can I just go on record to say that I really don’t care how many 64 yarders GZ hits in practice? Instead of that–move into the fifty to fifty four or five yard marks and just hit consistently. I’ll take that instead.

Goff with 3 INT’s in 2 minute drill and a nice TD to finish up his run. The other QB’s didn’t struggle as badly but the defense certainly could have had several turnovers over the event for all of the QB’s. Mannion had a few picks too.

Many plants are patented, GMO and non-GMO alike. The terminator seed is a name given to the sterile seed technology by anti-biotech activists. They are actually not being used anywhere.

    http://www.npr.org/sections/thesalt/2012/10/18/163034053/top-five-myths-of-genetically-modified-seeds-busted

Well, that is interesting and something I didn’t know. I think that’s a good thing because I’m all for using technology in positive ways–as long as we don’t create a “Frankenstein” along the way.

The growing population is something we will certainly have to deal with and no one ever seems to talk about that problem.

One thing I think regarding that is that I will not spend thousands of dollars to freeze my head so that in the future they will be able to unfreeze it and then clone me a body because–let’s face it–the future population will be worried about feeding itself. They ain’t bringing back PA Ram to feed. Unless they DO bring me back and then turn me into Soylent Green by cloning me a plump 600 pound body.
