ModeratorI think Capitalism has an easier road than socialism because capitalism taps into our darker-innate-selves. But I dunno. Maybe i just think that because I’ve been raised in a capitalist dystopia. Maybe If I’d been raised in a traditional tribal society I’d think cooperation was more of an easily accessible innate quality.
w
vI think humans are incredibly complex and adaptable. We have the innate capacity to be a great many things. The tribal society would select for altruism and cooperation because that’s what’s needed in a hunter-gatherer society, whereas self-interest is probably favored in a capitalist society.

ModeratorThat was way worse than expected. That was an embarrassing loss.
Soul crushing.

ModeratorVery strange.
I wasn’t expecting a victory tonight but there is way too much talent on this team for them to look that bad.
Especially the defense. They are relatively healthy.
Kroenke can’t be too happy. This won’t help ticket sales and he’s already feuding with Spanos over him not meeting season ticket sale projections for the new stadium.
This isn’t the kind of buzz he wanted surrounding his team as it moves into an expensive new stadium. The star appeal of his team is fading fast.
Interesting to see what McVay does and how the team responds over the last 5 games.
November 26, 2019 at 12:45 am in reply to: It’s not thanks to capitalism that we’re living longer, but progressive politics #108641nittany ram
ModeratorYeah, capitalism didn’t lift us out of the mud. If left to its own devices, it would bury us in it.
Whenever they are presented with a problem, capitalists like to say the free market will fix it. They say this about the current environmental crisis as well. The problem is, the free market never fixed anything. Regulations (ie progressive policies) fix the problems. We have relatively clean air and water because of regulations protecting them. We have relatively trustworthy pharmaceuticals because of the regulations requiring their safety and efficacy be tested prior to putting them on the market. Unfortunately the strength of the regulatory agencies is dependent on the will of those who happen to be in power at the time.
Of course, progressive policies on their own didn’t pull us out of the mud either. The development of sanitation in crowded urban areas wouldn’t have been possible without mechanical pumps – devices originally developed for industrial purposes. And this illustrates the conundrum we are in today. Reversing the current environmental crisis will require new innovations and technologies. Research on the scale necessary to develop these technologies is incredibly expensive. It’s so expensive that for the most part only big corporations have the money to do it. Of course, the regulations put in place to protect us from these corporations only drive the cost up more which deters the research that needs to be done. So we find ourselves in a bit of a predicament.
But anyways, that’s where we’re at.

ModeratorI am not too big a fan of Weddle. I don’t think he will be back next year. Just my opinion. I really like Matthews.
I agree. He doesn’t seem to have been much of a factor.
Johnson and Rapp, now that’s a safety combo you can set your watch to.

ModeratorI thought McVay was slow to adjust to the 6-1 front the Bears used in the second half. Once he did, the offense started rolling.
Gurley looked rejuvenated.
Goff’s numbers don’t reflect how well he played, IMO. He made some beautiful throws, and his numbers would have looked pretty good if not for a muff of a deep sideline pass that he dropped in over two defenders, and a 53 yard TD bomb that was called back. It was poetic because Collinsworth had just mentioned how the Rams didn’t have a deep threat with Woods and Cooks inactive, then on his very next breath Reynolds went flying past the Bears defense. Goff was clutch down the stretch.
Defense was outstanding.

ModeratorAnd it is unclear to me whether the strong dislike for Trump extends into more votes for the Democrat. Are those people who really, really, really dislike Trump new voters? Or the ones who voted for Hillary anyway? The polls show a close race right now, with Biden, Sanders, or Warren all beating Trump by a slim percentage. Just as polls had Clinton favored by a slim percentage.
Polls show Trump losing to Sanders and Warren, but as was pointed out to me on FB, those are national polls. They don’t necessarily reflect what will happen in the electoral college. I have no doubt whoever runs against Trump will win the popular vote, but the electoral vote is the issue, as it was in the last election.
November 17, 2019 at 9:46 am in reply to: Obama warns democrats about moving too far to the left #108234nittany ram
ModeratorWe have a two party system but it’s not composed of Democrats and Republicans. They are just a subset of a single humongous party called the “Status Quo”.
The other is the itsy-witsy, teeny-weeny, party called the “Left”. That’s the one Obama was warning you about.
Like the rest of the Status Quo party, he hates the Left. No matter how much he or other members of the Status Quo party dislike their president, they hate the Left even more. Because as much as they complain about their president, their differences are largely superficial. They all believe that the best way to help the masses (if they even care about the masses) is by appeasing the rich. In this sense Obama, that liberal paragon, has more in common with Trump than with Bernie or AOC.
I’m really getting tired of centrists trying to tell us that they are legitimate counters to the current power structure.

ModeratorIf it was done before the election, have they followed up on that?
His lie count in his first 1000 days was more than 13,000.
That’s not a misprint. More than 13,000. No president has ever come within light years of that. I’d bet no other human has.
I don’t know if there’s been any follow-up. I have seen the 13000 lie count before.
My question is, can the “Trump Effect” work for any right-wing, populist, presidential candidate in the future, or was there something unique to Trump and/or the particular circumstances that exist at this moment in time that will be hard for future candidates to copy?
nittany ram
ModeratorWell, I’d like to see Scientists study why Democrat-voters are ok with voting for murderous Imperialists, election after election.
Wonder why no American Scientists wonder about ‘that’ ?
w
vThe study wasn’t a Dem vs Rep thing. It wasn’t about the voting habits of Republicans. It was about something very specific, ie Trump supporters. It wanted to find out why Trump supporters remain loyal despite gaffs and lies that would have sunk any other Republican candidate in history. This study was conducted before he was elected.
And there have been all sorts of studies that look at why people vote the way they do. I think what you’re really asking is, “Why Democrat-voters don’t know they are voting for murderous imperialists?”
Well, you already know the answer to that, Squeaky. 😉

This Podcast Will Kill YouYou Must Remember This did a 5 or 6 part series on The Manson Murders. You might ask why would a podcast about Hollywood do a docu-series on Charles Manson and his family? Well, it’s because of the connection to Sharon Tate and Roman Polanski. I’ve always been fascinated by the Manson family and I have to say that docu-series is the best on the subject that I’ve ever seen or heard.

ModeratorIf I believed in karma, I’d say the football gods have more than made up for the PI in last season’s NFC championship game.
Between injuries and bad calls, the Rams season is on the verge of ruin.

ModeratorWell, fix the o-line and the biggest problems with the offense go away.
Goff has some problems of his own (also fixable), but the best thing you could do for him is fix the o-line.
That can be done in a single offseason.
Whit said on Cowherd that he’d like to keep playing beyond this season.
Fix the o-line and this team is a contender again.
nittany ram
ModeratorA nice effort by the defense spoiled by an inept offense.
O-line is banged up and depleted, but that doesn’t explain everything that’s wrong with the offense.
Goff is constantly being pressured, but that doesn’t explain everything that’s wrong with Goff.
It’s the ninth game and the start of the playoff push…what are they saving Gurley for now? He should be getting 25 touches a game.

ModeratorWhat draws me to the left is my dislike of inequality, exclusion, etc.
I reject the pervasive idea that the rich are deserving of their wealth just as the poor are deserving of their lack of wealth, as if the factors that contribute to wealth or poverty are inherent in the person and not a product of an exclusionary system of institutionalized oppression, inequality, bigotry, etc.
Ultimately I want to see a government and an economic system that serves everyone equally. How that happens doesn’t matter to me, whether it’s through some form of socialism or an attenuated capitalist system with strong social protections.
Although it’s not exclusively a leftist principle, protecting the environment is another priority. I want to reverse climate change and protect the remaining wild areas of the planet. I want the creation of government agencies that are tasked with developing clean renewable energy sources and improved agriculture/crop technologies. I’d also like to see legislation and policies based on evidence and scientific principles instead of ideology.
Ok, so now this has moved from why I’m a leftist to a wish list (what’s a commie without a manifesto?) so I’ll end this here.
