I thought McVay was slow to adjust to the 6-1 front the Bears used in the second half. Once he did, the offense started rolling.

Gurley looked rejuvenated.

Goff’s numbers don’t reflect how well he played, IMO. He made some beautiful throws, and his numbers would have looked pretty good if not for a muff of a deep sideline pass that he dropped in over two defenders, and a 53 yard TD bomb that was called back. It was poetic because Collinsworth had just mentioned how the Rams didn’t have a deep threat with Woods and Cooks inactive, then on his very next breath Reynolds went flying past the Bears defense. Goff was clutch down the stretch.

Defense was outstanding.

It was an up and down game for me. Liked the first half more than the second. The D saved the Rams. The O sputtered, mostly.

As others have mentioned, the rooks played well. I think it was Collingsworth who went out of his way to praise Edwards and Evans, especially and often.

It’s too early to tell, of course, after just one game of their pairing . . . but if they keep this up, the Rams have found their guard and RT for the present and the future — both are just 22. They need to try to trade Havenstein, though I’m guessing his contract is an impediment. No capologist, I, so I don’t know its impact. But I’m guessing it will be tough to make the trade.

Woods was a last minute scratch, and I hope he’s okay. On a trivial note, that threw me out of whack for my FFL team. I have a lot of Rams — Cooks, Kupp, Woods, Gurley and Zuerlein, and because the scratch was so late in the day, I couldn’t find a way to replace that slot with my bench. I had to choose between an empty slot at wideout or kicker. I dropped Zuerlein and picked up Reynolds. Not sure if that was wise, but I had very few options.

Again, hope he’s okay.

Bottom line: A win is a win is a win, as Gertrude Stein once said. Happy to see that.

goff’s season seems to be very similar to brees’ 2003 season – his third season in the league (age 24).

this is goff’s fourth season – age 25.

brees really struggled that season. his rating was 67.5 that year which ranked 28th in the league.

goff this year has a rating of 82.1 which is good for 27th in the league.

just numerous factors that are out of goff’s control. the oline has been in constant flux. gurley is not himself. not even close to himself.

and when you look a little further, it’s not like brees didn’t have help. he had a peak ladainian tomlinson in the backfield (finished 3rd in the league in rushing that year). he was in his second year under schottenheimer and offensive coordinator cam cameron.

goff still can make awesome throws. we saw it last night. he had at least 2 tds taken away from him (kupp fumble and reynolds td that was called back for illegal formation). against a bears defense that is ranked 8th in the league in total yards and 4th in scoring. without his 2 starting wrs. and an offensive line starting 2 rookies (in their age 22 seasons i should add).

now some of it falls on him too. he makes some really questionable throws at times. but the thing is it never fazes him. he’s a tough guy. and much like he’s shown throughout his career, the guy overcomes adversity and becomes better from it. he’s going to continue to take his lumps this season. but i’m fairly confident he rises above it. and this will end up being a positive experience for him.

Well like I’ve said before, I think Goff is “good enough” to win a ring, if he has a ringworthy team around him. I’m not concerned about Goff. As soon as I figured out that the OLine wasnt gonna work and Gurley wasnt Gurley anymore, I figured Goff would “regress.”

As Waterfield likes to point out, everything starts with an OLine.

If these two new OLine players prove to be good, Goff will regain his rhythm. But its way too soon for me to say the two new guys are good. One good game where they didnt have to pass block much, dont prove much.

One thing I will complain about with Goff, is, his footwork has disappointed me. In his college vids, his footwork amazed me. He had this little dance he did in the pocket and he was very accurate on the move EVEN UNDER PRESSURE. It seemed a special talent. This year and late last year, his footwork has just seemed kinda average to me. Nothing special. I’m not sure what, if anything, to make of that.
