ParticipantI was there, I thought Goff was going to pull off the upset. Ramsey picked him off on the goal line dropping the Lions to 0-8.
Rams defense has really grown on me this season, but they have nothing close to Ramsey in the secondary.
Rams have had bad juju in Detroit. Remember when the GSOT lost to Gus Frerotte and Johnnie Morton to hand the 6-1 Rams their second straight loss???
One major Rams’ advantage this Sunday, the Rams’ coaching staff, specifically play calling in crucial moments. I’ve watched almost every Lions game since “The Trade” ….Dan Campbell takes foolish risks that cost the Lions a lot of games in the Goff era the past 3 seasons.
Rams 28-19 Lions (Oct 24, 2021) Game Recap – ESPN
Stafford throws 3 TD passes, Rams edge Goff’s Lions 28-19
INGLEWOOD, Calif. — — Jared Goff was under immediate pressure from Aaron Donald when he dropped back late in a one-score game. He threw to the end zone while being dropped, and Jalen Ramsey picked it off.
Goff didn’t need a homecoming game to remind him it’s much easier to win when the Los Angeles Rams’ stars are on your side.
And Matthew Stafford is still loving his spot on the other side of the current chasm between the Lions and the Rams.
Stafford passed for 334 yards and three touchdowns against his former team, and Ramsey made an end-zone interception with five minutes left in the Rams’ 28-19 victory over Goff and winless Detroit on Sunday.
Stafford and Goff both acknowledged high emotions in the first game since they switched uniforms in a blockbuster trade last winter. Their postgame reunions with former teammates and coaches were uniformly warm, but their new teams stayed on the same season trajectories with the Rams’ (6-1) narrow win.
“Am I happy it’s over with? Yeah,” said Stafford, who passed for 45,109 yards and never won a playoff game in his dozen years in Detroit. “Got a lot of great friends, got a lot of people that I care about that are on that team or from that city, and just just glad to have this one over with. Can put the storylines away and just go out and play football the rest of the year, and just enjoy it.”
Goff passed for 268 yards and led the Lions (0-7) within striking distance of an upset before falling heartbreakingly short. Afterward, Goff chatted with his former teammates and exchanged pleasantries with coach Sean McVay, who slapped his former quarterback’s helmet after their hug.
“I didn’t think about it until after, but there’s a lot of guys I never saw after the trade,” Goff said. “Being able to see them and say hello and catch up for two minutes was good. It was healthy. And then once the game started, it was very as usual. It really felt like any other game.”
That was bad news for the struggling Lions and good news for the Rams, who hung on despite a litany of mistakes.
The Rams led 25-19 when Goff drove the Lions to the Los Angeles 12 while converting four third downs. But Ramsey came up with his latest game-changing play on his 27th birthday while Goff was being hit by Donald, the Rams’ other 2020 All-Pro.
“Those two guys are the best at their position for a reason, and made a great play on us,” Goff said.
Goff still hasn’t won an NFL start without McVay as his head coach, falling to 0-14. McVay declined to say much about his postgame conversation with Goff, but the coach praised his replacement.
“He was great in the clutch,” McVay said of Stafford. “And really, even when things weren’t going well, he just stays nice and even-keeled, and that’s what a great quarterback does. He’s our leader.”
Cooper Kupp had 10 catches for 156 yards and two touchdowns for the Rams, including the go-ahead score with 13:59 left. Van Jefferson also caught a scoring pass from Stafford, whose first TD pass to Kupp was the 300th of his NFL career.
“Detroit’s a tough out,” Stafford said. “Always have been, probably always will be. Just happy to get one.”
D’Andre Swift made a 63-yard catch-and-run TD on the opening possession for the Lions, who lost their 11th straight game despite jumping to a double-digit lead in a rare strong start. Kalif Raymond had six catches for 115 yards.
Austin Seibert kicked four field goals in a superb special teams game for the Lions, who also recovered an early onside kick and ran two successful fake punts.
But the Rams kept Goff’s offense out of the end zone in the final 57 minutes as they rallied from an early double-digit deficit and improved to 42-0 with a halftime lead under McVay.
“This is a different caliber team,” Detroit coach Dan Campbell said of the Rams. “This is a team that’s been built over years, and they’ve got some weapons. We actually didn’t make as many errors as we’ve made. We gave ourselves a chance.”
The Lions’ opening drive produced their first touchdown in the first half since Week 2. Goff read a blitz and threw a short screen pass to Swift, who scampered through the secondary.
Detroit then got to snap the ball with a lead for the first time all season when it embarrassed the Rams’ special teams twice, recovering an onside kick three plays before punter Jack Fox completed a fourth-down pass.
Stafford eventually led three scoring drives in the first half, but Detroit led 19-17 late in the third quarter. Stafford converted two long third downs before finding Kupp for a TD early in the fourth.
Robert Woods, who had six catches for 70 yards, took in the 2-point conversion for a six-point lead.
MONSTER KUPP
Kupp’s immediate connection with Stafford is becoming historic: He is the first player in the Super Bowl era to record more than 800 yards receiving and nine TDs in his team’s first seven games.
OLD FRIENDS
Along with the numerous reunions for Goff and Stafford, stalwart defensive tackle Michael Brockers also had warm pregame meetings with several ex-teammates. He spent his first nine NFL seasons with the Rams.
INJURIES
Rams rookie CB Robert Rochell injured his knee in the first half.
Lions LB Trey Flowers injured his knee in the second half. … DB AJ Parker injured his shoulder in the second half.

ParticipantRams kept battling… and won at Levi…. It’s been five years…
As noted, big plays by Yeast…
Wentz literally “carried” the Rams with his legs.. with some very nice passes thrown in.
RAMS WIN … BANG BANG!
joemad
ParticipantCarson Wentz vs Sam Darnold won’t be bad to watch…
I don’t see the Rams starting Stafford or Kupp or AD… do you?
I don’t see the 49ers starting Purdy, Kittle or Deebo.
Ben Skowronek, Tutu, Austin Trammel, Royce Freeman, Ronnie Rivers…. this is your chance to shine. ….
that’s too bad, i wanted to see Kyren’s mom get to snatch another ball from an opposing fan in the stands….. She rightfully snaked that ball away from Saquon Barkley fan last Sunday in East Rutherford…..
A 10-7 record would be nice to see.
joemad
ParticipantI can’t believe that with 8 billion people on this planet, there aren’t 32 of them who can kick a damn ball through the uprights. That is all.
indeed. a planet that’s filled with soccer players at every corner of the world.
There’s got to be someone much more capable than freaking Haver-sick
joemad
ParticipantThat’s right zn, the Rams choked, thankfully the Giants choked even more…
East coast road wins are never easy…

ParticipantBTW zn, I think that I take your game day work on this board for granted. I really like scrolling though everything you post here before and after games. It’s nice to have everything in one place. Thank you.
Ditto. zn makes this board what it is. Thanks.
Yes indeed, this is the place to be… thanks ZN

ParticipantYes, Stafford made great throws and created / extended plays . He’s been playing great.
Jones early sack got the defense rolling
Fuller’s pick kind of sealed it.
Saints don’t quit, they had late game fireworks against the Lions and Jags that came up short. Saints are not a bad team.
Rams looking pretty complete….. but do you folks have confidence in this kicker? Not me.
joemad
ParticipantRams running game was overdue for a fumble or two… close to 150 yds rushing today
secondary has been playing better lately, but today not so great against Washington’s passing game that is better than people think.
Cooper Kupp, Robinson and Higby looking better in recent weeks.
The Rams really haven’t won a meaningful game yet this season… in 5 days Derick Carr and the 7-7 Saints come marching in,…
this is their chance win a meaningful game.

ParticipantI feel if we win our last 5 games, making the playoffs, would be great, but not a guarantee we make the playoffs. But, it will give us a chance. Winning 4 out of our last 5, we will need help, to make it into the playoffs. I’m going off, on what I see.
Not sure if this is clear in the discussion but the Rams have 4 games left, not 5. To me it looks like they get in if they win 3 of their last 4.
My bad. My brain is not there. There are 4 games. I do feel we need to win 4 straight. Winning 3 out of 4, we still will need some help. No guarantee.
i may have added to this 4 vs 5 game ambiguity on my game reaction thread to the Raven’s game. I stated that the Rams play Washington next week, thus next week, the Rams are in position to win 4 of their last 5 games that they played. e.g, if the Rams beat the Commanders next week, they can claim that they have won 4 of their last 5 games that they recently played.
The Rams should’ve won that freaking game yesterday. Minnesota scoring 3 points to seal a win in Vegas yesterday didn’t help the Rams either.
Go New York Tackle Football Giants… they need to beat the Packers tonight.
joemad
Participantyou shouldn’t lose on a walk off punt return, but you can’t have delay of game penalty on your first possession in OT.
BTW Any holding calls against the Raven’s OL today.?
next week ..home game vs Commanders, Rams are in position of winning 4 of their last 5 games
joemad
ParticipantThese segments are very very cool.
Ellard states that he returned punts early in his career to get chances to touch the ball more often since they had Dickerson in the backfield is a very nice way of saying our QBs sucked before the Jim Everrett era…..
200+ receiving yards against Dickerson’s Colts….and he felt bad for Dickerson.
#80 Ellard

ParticipantI always thought that OBJ was great, but I didn’t realize how consistently great a receiver he really was until I saw him play for the Rams.
As good as the Rams secondary has grown to play in recent weeks, I think OBJ is gonna go wild this Sunday.
Rams need to play a near perfect game to win. The last time they won in Baltimore they played far from perfect but still won, because of OBJ. Do you folks remember the 4th down catch right before the game winning TD that he caught in Baltimore? That was one of my favorite regular season games of all time… I love road victories.
joemad
ParticipantYou’re right IR, Joe Flacco was picking the Rams apart, until he got picked.
Rams Oline played great today….I don’t recall Stafford getting sacked today against that great Cleveland pass defense.
Rams face the original Cleveland Browns next…. The Ravens in Baltimore. Bring ’em on

ParticipantCrows used to piss me off, loud gawking. swarming packs, ….. they’d tear up patches on my lawn to eat grubs, especially this time of year, but the destruction they do to my manicured grass usually turns out to be beneficial to my lawn with the help of their natural lawn aeration ability.
I have some odd crow experiences…., they’re a trip, but we coexist… i pretty sure that the resident crows in my neighborhood know me and for the time being they actually like me….but i don’ think they always did like me… i suspect that they must’ve known that i owned a Crosman 760 as a kid and that I might have had an impact on prior crow generations.
Based on what you shared, i’m going to talk them much more frequently.

ParticipantOther than the Card’s opening drive, the Rams defense played great…
Stafford 4 TDs… he threw to 8 different receivers today.
Rams still need a solid kicker.

ParticipantWentz might be the Rams best back-up QB since Goff backed up Wolford, where Goff had the guts and will to beat the Seahawks in Seattle with a damaged thumb on his throwing hand.
Carson Wentz 4.0 GPA in college…
joemad
ParticipantI think the Rams win that game comfortably if Stafford plays. Rypien not only played himself off the Rams’ roster, but possibly out of the NFL altogether with that performance. Heck, I think the Rams would have won that game behind Wolford. They missed Jones as well.
I agree…. a capable QB with game mgmt ability wins that game for the Rams.
joemad
ParticipantStick a fork in this season, the Rams are done.
joemad
ParticipantNo one would rule #Rams QB Matthew Stafford out, but sources say the plan is for QB Brett Rypien to get the start on Sunday vs the #Packers, per me and @TomPelissero. Unless Stafford (UCL sprain) surprises everyone and wakes up feeling ready, it’ll be Rypien.

ParticipantFuck the Raiders and fuck Josh… Sam Bradford took a huge step back from his ROY season when Josh took over as OC.
a lot of people have the ability to be a Monday morning QB with ideas and suggestions to improve a team or playbook…., the key is to implement those ideas…. Josh and the Belichick coaching tree can’t seem to execute like Belichick…..Perhaps Vrabel in Tenn has shown some capacity to do that, but not many of his disciples have done it.

ParticipantTHE RAMS HORN IN ON A DYNASTY – Sports Illustrated Vault | SI.com
In the past few weeks there have been moments in the huddle of the Los Angeles Rams when the inexperienced quarterback, Vince Ferragamo, has mumbled something or other and Dennis Harrah, the veteran guard, has been compelled to say, “Vince, we don’t even have a play like that.” Ferragamo would apologize and speak in more familiar terms. Well, that was then. Last Sunday in cold, gray Dallas, all Ferragamo did was whip “America’s team,” the heavily favored Cowboys, by the score of 21-19 and take the often maligned, frequently defeated Rams into the championship game of the National Conference against Tampa Bay.
Until six games ago Ferragamo was an understudy to Pat Haden. Vince got his chance when Haden broke a thumb, and even after that he was benched a couple of times in favor of the more experienced Bob Lee. But nobody ever said Ferragamo didn’t have an arm and plenty of ability. Coach Ray Malavasi kept saying it, after apologizing to Vince for taking him out of games. Ferragamo had been a widely sought college prospect, one who used to make John McKay wipe his chin at the thought of recruiting him for USC. But Vince went to Cal, and then left for Nebraska.

Now Ferragamo will also face the same coach, McKay, who once labeled him the best quarterback prospect in the solar system. It surely boggles many minds to consider that Los Angeles and Tampa Bay will be playing to see who goes to the Super Bowl, but no doubt the most stupefied people of all must be the Cowboys. In essence, Ferragamo did to the Dallas boys what Dallas, and mainly Roger Staubach, has had a habit of doing to other teams. Ferragamo beat the Cowboys in the dying moments of a wild and weird game by throwing his third touchdown pass of the afternoon, a 50-yarder to Billy Waddy, with exactly 2:06 to play.
Maybe Ferragamo is developing a thing about clocks. With precisely three seconds left before the end of the first half, he threw a 43-yard touchdown pass to Ron Smith. Actually, on that one more credit was due Smith than Ferragamo, because Smith, a second-year man from San Diego State, made a leaping, storybook catch in the Dallas end zone after a midair wrestling match with Safety Randy Hughes, the substitute for the long lost and sorely missed Charlie Waters. That Smith could have come down with the football was simply not to be believed. That play gave Los Angeles a 14-5 lead.
Ferragamo figured in almost everything that happened. In the first quarter he had retreated into his end zone and fallen down, giving up a safety to the Cowboys. For a while it looked as if two points might be all of the scoring for the day, because neither team could generate any kind of offense. One reason Dallas wasn’t doing much was L.A.’s funny “nickel-7” defense, a thing concocted by Defensive Coordinator Bud Carson. Against Staubach and the shotgun formation the Rams sent in seven defensive backs, and they appeared to be everywhere at once
With Staubach generating only a field goal in the first half, Ferragamo recovered from his safety and capped a 92-yard second-quarter drive with the first touchdown of the game. It came on a 32-yard pass to Wendell Tyler, who had gotten isolated on Linebacker D. D. Lewis. This was the same Tyler who launched the drive with a 35-yard jaunt around the left side of the Dallas defense, where Too Tall Jones, Charlie Waters and Hollywood Henderson used to roam
Dallas got back in the game in the third quarter with a touchdown that resulted from two things: 1) Staubach looking a little more like himself, like the man who led the NFL in passing in 1979, and 2) a 14-yard pass interference penalty on the Rams’ Jim Youngblood, who either did or did not interfere with Tony Dorsett. Youngblood’s thoughts about the penalty were not kept to himself; he kicked things and hollered. Dorsett may have been play-acting, but it worked. Dallas had the ball at the Rams’ one-yard line, and Ron Springs lunged over. Now it was 14-12 Rams, but that fickle fellow Momentum seemed to have switched sides.
Ferragamo throws the occasional bad ball. One of them found Cliff Harris’ stomach late in the third quarter, and the interception got Dallas moving to the touchdown that put the Cowboys ahead 19-14. With a couple of passes and a good run by Dorsett, Dallas worked its way to a third-and-two near the Rams’ goal. On that play, Dorsett went in motion and Roger dropped back, suddenly stopped and zipped a shot over the middle to Jay Saldi, who was so open he might have been humming.
Afterward, the Rams came back with a ground game featuring Tyler and Cullen Bryant, driving from their own 23 to the Dallas 32. But, on fourth down, after one official called interference on Cliff Harris and another overruled him, the game appeared to be over.
Not to Ferragamo. With the clock approaching the two-minute warning and the ball at midfield, Vince had a discussion with himself in the huddle. A play had been suggested from the sideline, but Ferragamo said, “Aw, let’s go with the other one.” The other one was the winning touchdown pass, 60-X Corner.
“Waddy went out and around the zone,” Ferragamo said. “They were in a deep zone and Cliff Harris was reading my eyes. I fooled him.”
Billy Waddy almost didn’t go “out and around” far enough. Mike Hegman, the Dallas linebacker who replaced Henderson, managed to scrape some paint off the ball while it was in the air, but did not impede its flight. The ball sailed perfectly into Waddy’s arms at the Dallas 27, and he outran everyone to the end zone
The Cowboys had a chance after the following kickoff to do that thing Staubach did to the Washington Redskins two weeks before, that thing he has done to a lot of opponents over the years: produce a game-winning score in the final two minutes. But after Dorsett ran for 12 yards to the Dallas 33, the Cowboys did nothing. Their season ended with Staubach throwing incomplete passes to Tony Hill, throwing to Guard Herb Scott, an ineligible receiver, and throwing over Drew Pearson’s head.
Hughes, another handsome young man, replaced Waters and did O.K. until he dislocated a shoulder three weeks ago against Philadelphia. Before the Rams game there were two opinions about whether Hughes would be ready to play. Landry said he was ready; Hughes said, “I want to play, but I’m no fool.” Landry was right.
It’s such statements that ultimately get players traded from Dallas. Henderson used to talk a lot, and finally he talked too much, so smack in the middle of the season he found himself “retired.” Hegman stepped in to replace him. So the Cowboys had three not-so-household words in their defense—Dutton, Hughes and Hegman.
And now America is without a team, and the NFC is going to send a strange ball club to Super Bowl XIV; either Tampa Bay, with six losses and a quarter-back, Doug Williams, who finished 27th on a list of 28 in statistics, or Los Angeles, with seven losses and a quarter-back Who often has trouble remembering anything but 60-X Corner.
