ROSTER MOVES
The Rams made a curious move Monday when they claimed Brandon Allen off waivers from Jacksonville.
What’s curious about it?. Most teams have 3 QBs. We weren’t the only team that wanted him. He has some upside, is cheap, and is under contract until 2020.
AgamemnonParticipantTweet before was just about people not the Rams. The Rams were great to me, Good good people in that organization! Never assume…

AgamemnonParticipantHow the NFL waiver wire works: Rules, deadlines, priority order, more
Hereâs everything you need to know about the NFLâs waiver wire system.
by Jeremy Reisman@DetroitOnLion Sep 3, 2017, 8:30am EDTCut day has come and gone and now all 32 NFL teams now sit with a comfortable 53-man roster. But the team building is far from over. With literally over 1,000 players now out of a job, itâs each general managerâs duty to scour the market and add players that could help their team.
However, there are rules to be had. Not every player can immediately join any team. That would be chaos. Instead, the NFL devised the waiver wire, which fantasy players are probably more than familiar with. But the rules arenât all the same, so letâs break down exactly what the NFL waiver wire is.
What is the waiver wire? The NFL waiver wire is a system to make sure that teams are given a fair shot at young players in the league that have been cut from another team. When a player is waived, there is a 24-hour period in which they are on âwaivers.â Any NFL team that would like to add that player can then put in a claim, and after the waiver claim period is up, the team with the highest priority is awarded the player. He must immediately join their 53-man roster; he cannot be moved to a practice squad if claimed.
How is waiver wire priority determined? From the first day of the league year until the conclusion of Week 3 of the regular season, waiver wire priority is determined by how teams finished the prior seasonâor to put simply, the draft order. This system is created this way to benefit teams that were really bad last year. The Cleveland Browns finished 1-15 last year, therefore theyâll have the No. 1 priority of any waived players until Week 3 of the season.
The Detroit Lions finished with the 21st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, therefore their priority is 21. The Lions will only be able to add a player via waivers if the 20 teams in front of them pass.
Starting Week 4 of the regular season, waiver priority is determined by records of the current season. For example, if a team is 0-3 after three weeks, theyâll likely have the No. 1 waiver wire priority (pending tiebreakers).
Who is subject to the waiver wire?Just because a player is released doesnât mean they have to go through waivers. If a player has four or more accrued seasons, they are simply released of their current contract and immediately become a free agent able to sign with any team at any time.
But if a player has three or fewer seasons in the NFL, they must go through waivers. Thatâs why youâll see some players listed as âreleasedâ (not subject to waivers) vs. âwaivedâ (on waivers).
What does waived/injured mean?
A player who is âwaived/injuredâ is subject to waivers all the same, but the team is notifying to the rest of the league that this player has suffered an injury. It is usually common courtesy for teams to let these player go through waivers unclaimed, but it is not against the rules to put in a claim.
If the player is claimed, he must go on the teamâs 53-man roster, like usual. If unclaimed, the team that waived him has two options: either place the player on injured reserve or come to an injury settlement and allow them to become a free agent.
When must teams put in their claims by?
.
Normally, when a player is waived, teams have 24 hours to put in a claim. But itâs a little different during these 53-man cuts. Teams have until noon on Sunday to put in their waiver claims, even if a player wasnât waived until the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Saturday.
.
At noon, teams will be notified of which players they were awarded then and which players went unclaimed.Where does the practice squad fit in?
Any player eligible for the practice squad must first go through waivers to make the 10-man roster. If a player makes it unclaimed through waivers, he is then eligible to join the practice squad of any team he desires. Typically if thereâs mutual interest, theyâll rejoin the team that waived them out of courtesy and familiarity, but it is not required.
If a player is claimed by a team, he may not go to their practice squad. To make it on their practice squad, he must be waived again and go unclaimed by all other teams.
For this weekend, teams can start adding unclaimed waived players to their practice squad starting at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.
AgamemnonParticipantItâs the same at safety. It is completely unconventional to have 5 safeties and 6 corners. But then DBs can be used on special teams, plus they could possibly lose Tru, Joyner, and Alexander next yearâall 3. So they are as much thinking about the future as anything else.
GM Les Snead Talks Roster Moves: He says they kept 6 safeties and want Isaah Johnson on the Practice Squad, because you want to keep your best players, all of those guys can play in this league, and 3 of the 7 are URFAs. You never know how that is going to turn out. Planning for the future on that.
AgamemnonParticipantSome head scratchers for sure cut Jordan with Countess and Hill looking awful to me and Forest was making plays all over the place but I think Wade knows what heâs doing
Iâm not sure why Troy Hill gets all the love. He seems a bit shaky to me at the spot. But they see more than we do. Alsoânot sure how his special teams skills are. That can be a factor.
I didn’t even have Jordan or Forrest ‘on the bubble’, I thought they would make it for sure. But, I am ok with the guys that did make it, just surprised.

AgamemnonParticipantSeptember 3: Claiming period for players placed on waivers at the final roster reduction will expire at noon ET.
September 3: Upon receipt of the Personnel Notice at approximately 1 p.m. ET, clubs may establish a Practice Squad of 10 players (the four designated clubs (NFC South) may sign one player to an International Practice Player Contract.) No club, including the playerâs prior club, will be permitted to sign a player to a Practice Player Contract until all clubs have received simultaneous notification via the above Personnel Notice that such playerâs prior NFL player contract has been terminated via the waiver system.
Teams can start with the practice squad today.
.
Teams can claim players today.——————————————————————————————-
September 7: At midnight ET, the Top 51 Rule expires for all NFL clubs.
This is when all teams must be under the regular Cap. Spotrac show the Rams with an Est. Cap Space (All): $-1,118,663. Spotrac seems more up to date than “Over the Cap”.

AgamemnonParticipantand he has devices available under the labor deal for exerting leverage in an effort to get the Rams to forget about the $1.8 million heâs due to make this year, the $6.8 million heâs due to make next year, and the two tags the Rams could apply.
What devices? Good luck with that. The Rams aren’t going to renegotiate the CBA.

You add up the boxes, that equals $92.5 million.

Stafford’s old contract. The $5.5 million signing bonus carried forward. The $16.5 million in base salary changed to $1 million base, $10 million signing bonus carried for the maximum of 5 years, and %5.5 million was just cut.
.
The Rams can’t match that structure, because Donald has 2 years left not 1 and there is no money to move in 2017 and very little money to move in 2018.
AgamemnonParticipantRams CB Kevin Peterson led all Rams last night in PFF grades in preseason finale
September 1, 2017
| By:
Jake Ellenbogen
Pro Football Focus has graded every top five players on each team for every preseason game. Rams cornerback Kevin Peterson graded the highest in last night’s game versus the Packers at an 83.4 grade.
Rams QB Dan Orlovsky (32.5) was quite honestly a train wreck last night being unable to throw accurate passes and only completing one pass ten or more yards down the field. He was picked off twice and PFF graded him as such in one of the worst preseason QB performances of the year.
Running back Justin Davis (75.0) sealed the deal that he would likely make the 53-man roster after another solid performance. His ability to make sharp cuts and explode in a single direction leaves him with a ton of upside.
DL Louis Trinca-Pasat (78.0) was a menace inside after racking up three pressures.
Lastly, LB Andy Mulumba (73.9) looked good in recording a sack and being around the ball all game long.
Here is what Pro Football Focus had to say about each player:
HB Justin Davis, 75.0 overall grade
“Davis broke two tackles for the second straight week to close out the preseason. Topping 50 yards on 17 carries was as noteworthy as a skill position performance got in this match between the Packers and the Rams.”
QB Dan Orlovsky, 32.5 overall grade
“Orlovsky played the entire game, giving Jared Goff and Sean Mannion the night off, and did little to apply any pressure. A pair of interceptions were paired with some wild inaccuracy with Orlovsky completing only one of his five passes targeted 10 or more yards downfield.”
DE Louis Trinca-Pasat, 78.0 overall grade
“Trinca-Pasat matched his production through the first three weeks of preseason in one night by racking up 3 pressures (all hurries) against the Packers. Trinca-Pasatâs fourth pressure, a hit on Brett Hundley, was nullified by his own roughing the passer penalty.”
OLB Andy Mulumba, 73.9 overall grade
“On his return to Lambeau Field, former Packersâ OLB Mulumba racked up his second sack of the preseason and finished third on the defense with 3 stops, bettered by only S Marqui Christian and LB Nicholas Grigsby.”
