The NFC West has been insanely good through seven weeks. Like, historically good

    ==

    from https://theramswire.usatoday.com/2020/10/27/rams-nfc-west-division-history-record/

Combined, the NFC West has a record of 19-8, which carries a winning percentage of .704. According to the Elias Sports Bureau, that’s the second-best winning percentage of any division through seven weeks since the 1970 merger, only behind the 1984 AFC West that started 25-10.

No other division in the NFL has all four teams above .500, and only the AFC North even has three teams. All four of the NFC West’s teams have a positive point differential, too, and are either at or above .500 on the road.

The Rams have admittedly played some poor to mediocre offenses this season but through 7 games you cannot complain about being:

    – 6th in yards/game
    – 3rd in yards/play
    – 2nd in scoring defense
    – 1st in 2nd half scoring defense
    – 7th in opposing passer rating
    – t-3rd in QB sacks, 6th in sack percentage
    – 2nd in both passing yards/attempt and yards/completion
    – 4th in 3rd down conversions
    – 10th in red zone defense

it seems that more than a few don’t realize just how dominating the bears pass defense has been dating back to 2019, or that the bears defense led the league in just about every meaningful pass defense category heading into last night’s game…. in short, i think a lot of folks are shortchanging goff’s night against the bears, the guy delivered, in fact it was the second best qb outing against the bears defense dating back to last season, i.e. in the bears last 23 games, second only to mahomes… moreover the 24 offensive points the rams hung on the bears last night (which could have been more had they not taken their foot off the gas in the 4th quarter), was the 4th most offensive points the bears have allowed since last year.

A question for RH. You once wrote (in Jan.) that SportRadar ranked Goff 13th among qbs when pressured. I don’t know how to find that stat myself or where JG ranks now. Any clues?

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Hi! Sure, I can look that up again. SportRadar is a paid service that we have access to. Are you wondering about his 2020 ranking?

Found it! I had used passer rating as my standard last year, so I’ll do the same for 2020.

Pressured: 59.7, 17th among starting QBs
    Non-pressure: 120.0, 4th among starting QBs

Last year, it was 54.7 when pressured, 92.6 when not pressured.

Sources: The #Bengals are trading DE Carlos Dunlap to the #Seahawks in exchange for draft pick compensation. Dunlap gets his wish, and Seattle gets some pass-rush help.

The Seahawks seem to continually trade for pass rushing help and it never seems to actually help

Hopefully they get the mostly ineffective, 1 sack Dunlap of 2020 and not the 13.5 sack version from 2015.

But what makes Goff special in my opinion is what de does really well. The Rams run more play action than any other team, which means Goff has to turn his back on the defense on pretty much every play. People take that for granted, but many, many QBs simply cannot turn their backs on the defense and then turn around, decipher the defense, and make quick decisions and accurate throws. Goff makes this seem so easy and routine, but most QBs really can’t do this at the level we are accustomed to.

The Rams also ask Goff to throw into the middle of the defense more than any team I watch, and into tight windows. The Rams’ offense relies on this feature. If you throw into the middle of the defense, you are going to also have tips, picks, and close calls. It’s part of the deal. I saw Mahomes throw into the middle of the field against the Raiders two weeks ago and threw a horrible pick that cost the Chiefs their comeback.

Brady had worse stats than Goff two weeks ago in his LOSS to the Bears. It’s ok to be critical of Goff, but its unfair to not recognize his skills and his importance to this offense.

This is Goff’s first year with this level of control over the offense. Prior to this, he was McVay’s puppet doing whatever his earpiece told him to do. Now he has more control and has a much longer leash. He’s still a work in progress learning to read defenses. But when you put his play into that context, Jared is doing very well and will only get better with experience.

Goff is a true franchise QB in every sense of the word. Snead chose right between Goff and Wentz. Goff continues to validate the Ram’s choice and is every bit of a franchise QB. This has allowed the FO to build a complete team around him on both sides of the ball. Everything points to Goff becoming a complete QB and having a very long and successful career.

Today was just a walkthrough for the Rams and TE Tyler Higbee did participate, but he remains day to day for what Sean McVay has described as a pretty gnarly hand contusion that is painful and affecting the mobility of the hand.

Rams DC Brandon Staley on LB Justin Hollins: “I love this guy. I was fortunate to coach him last year. When he became available, I just knew he’d fit a role for us.” Staley said Hollins is versatile, good against the run, can play in multiple packages.

Rams head coach Sean McVay this afternoon described Higbee’s hand injury as a painful contusion that is “not really in an isolated area. It’s kind of all over.”

    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-rankings-the-top-25-cornerbacks-through-week-7-of-the-2020-nfl-season

    15. JALEN RAMSEY, LOS ANGELES RAMS — 72.6
Jalen Ramsey is a transformative talent for a defense — a physically imposing player at cornerback who can line up against the league’s freakiest receivers, allowing the rest of the Rams’ secondary to worry about guys they can actually contend with. And Ramsey is on his way to the best PFF coverage grade since his incredible 2017 season in Jacksonville. Quarterbacks have targeted him 30 times this season for just 16 catches and 160 yards, and despite his incredibly physical play, he has been flagged only once this season.

    23. Darious Williams, Los Angeles Rams — 70.1
A surprise performer in the Rams’ secondary, Darious Williams was impressive enough on limited snaps last year to fight his way into a bigger role and become a starter in 2020, kicking Troy Hill inside to the slot while he mans the other outside position alongside Jalen Ramsey. Williams boasts some huge plays on his tape this season, with two picks and three pass breakups. His diving interception to seal a win against the New York Giants back in Week 5 was one of the plays of the season so far by any defensive back.

Rams are the lowest scoring offense in nfc west

But the RAMs are in sixth place in the league in point differential…

With McVay using more of the ground game, it’s killing the clock time, at the same time, it wears down our opponents defenses by controlling the clock….

So if our points are down from previous years… I take that all day long as long as we win those games… this tells me our Defense is getting better with each week….

But in the back of my mind, I know if McVay needs to light it up and score points, we can do so… look at the Bills game… coming back scoring 29 points in the second half… just missed in winning the game from our D not holding the Bills in the last mins of the game…

Remember when the Rams coulda drafted Marvin Harrison, and they took Eddie Kennison instead? I remember that.

The front office sure has improved under Snead.

Even as Joe Noteboom returns to the active roster at some point, Sean McVay says that David Edwards will continue to start at left guard because now the OL has the desired continuity.

Andrew Whitworth says this is one of the most brutal schedules he’s played in his 15 seasons regarding the East Coast travel that’s been surrounded with big-time prime time matchups.

Whitworth suggests they send flowers to whoever they made mad in the scheduling office.

    Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Whitworth has been around a long, long time but said that this year’s Rams travel schedule has been the most brutal in his memory considering trip-to-game-to-recovery process.

Rams DT Aaron Donald, on the concept of facing a rookie quarterback in his first NFL start as the Rams will in Tua on Sunday: “He’s still a quarterback in the National Football League.”

Regarding facing a left-handed QB, on Monday Sean McVay mentioned that really the only thing that changes is the spin on the ball so not really a factor for Rams; however they may drill DBs a little with the jugs machine on “left” as they would with a lefty punter so that they

can eyeball as they work to make plays on the ball. Today Aaron Donald mentioned that Tua may prefer to flush left so they want to be ready for that and will also drill opposite-side strips

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
This is the youngest Rams team OL Andrew Whitworth has been on, but he’s enjoying getting to know those players.

“Even though there’s this huge gap, I think there’s an opportunity there for me that I don’t want to miss to help them grow as men and help them grow as players.”

    Next Gen Stats@NextGenStats
First-year defensive coordinator Brandon Staley has utilized Jalen Ramsey’s versatile skill-set by playing him at the “Star” position in the #Rams defense.

Ramsey has aligned in the slot on 20.9% of snaps this season, the highest of his career.

Staley has also allowed Ramsey to rush the passer more often than he has in previous seasons. Ramsey’s 11 pass rushes this season are more than he’s had in his first four seasons combined (10).

i think goff’s ceiling is a top 10 caliber qb. he’ll never be consistent enough or good enough against pressure to be a top 5 qb.

he’s in his fifth year. i think he’s getting ready to plateau. but that’s not a knock on goff. he’s a good qb. and the chances of finding a top 5 qb to replace goff are just not realistic. he can take the rams to a superbowl. well. he already has. but he can get us to one and win one. it’d be cool if it was this season.
