Cardinals claimed former Rams’ WR Pharoh Cooper today on waivers from the Los Angeles Rams.

    Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
Sean McVay said they try to keep it the same every week, but there is an increased sense of urgency, a more serious approach. Rams coming off back-to-back losses, now prepare for Cardinals.

Rams held walk throughs today. RB Todd Gurley (Knee), RB Justin Davis (Shoulder) and OLB Samson Ebukam (Illness) listed as “Did not practice.”

Sean McVay said veteran RB C.J. Anderson, who the Rams signed Tuesday, could play a role as soon as Sunday against the Cardinals. “Very sharp, cerebral player,” McVay said. “He’s played in some systems very similar in terms of the verbiage, in terms of some of the things that we try to emphasize specific to the running game and in protections.”

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
#Rams Aqib Talib said everyone gets back to basics after a couple a losses, including his wife who has been putting more vitamins out for him in the morning.

Doesn’t look like the #Rams will be shy getting C.J. Anderson onto the field as quickly as possible: Said Sean McVay: “You can see him playing a role as this week”

Arizona is averaging a league-worst 13.7 points per game. If that holds up, it would be the worst in the NFL since 2012, when Kansas City averaged 13.2 points per game. (The 2016 Rams averaged 14.0).

Rams pass-game coordinator Shane Waldron said they can’t “chase ghosts” in terms of new Arizona player Pharoh Cooper knowing their stuff. Waldron said some teams have had the same hand signals and code words for 15 years. Interesting insight there.

McVay on Goff: “I think there’s some decisions we would want back, but if you look at it, they’re specific plays. You’re talking about 65 to 70 plays, every single game. Unfortunately with him, we keep talking about two plays.” I’d say “two plays” is a bit on the sunny side.

I’d say best-case scenario for the Rams on Sunday is to get an early multi-touchdown lead, then sit Gurley. It’s been a long, long while since they’ve had that, though.

McVay said team still has confidence in JoJo Natson as punt returner, even after Sunday fumble, and Natson also might handle kickoffs after waiving of Pharoh Cooper.

The Wk15 loss to PHI was only the second time Sean McVay’s Rams have run more plays than the opposition and lost. The other was 2017 Wk5 vs SEA. Combined turnover margin of -5 in those two defeats. (*As always, 2017 Wk17 vs SF ignored)

6 of last 10 Super Bowl teams lost 2 to 4 games in December:

    2012 Ravens 1-4
2009 Saints 2-3 in last five games.
    2013 Broncos & Seahawks 2-2 in Dec.
    2010 Packers & 2011 Giants were 3-2 in Dec.

#Rams Wade Phillips begins his weekly press conference by mentioning the #Broncos Super Bowl team he was a coach for lost a couple of games in December. Message: No reason to panic

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Wade Phillips starts his media session with, “First of all, the sky is not falling.”

Which is weird, because Wade is on Twitter, and I thought he would have heard the news by now…

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Wade Phillips, on whether he ever got into it with people in the stands: “I say hello to my wife.” Said he thinks the incident with Marcus Peters has been dealt with.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
“He’s one of the reasons I’ve got a Super Bowl ring.” – Wade Phillips on C.J. Anderson, the newest Ram

Wade Phillips says Aaron Donald reminds him of John Randle, which is some seriously high praise.

Gurley and RB Justin Davis (shoulder) did not practice.

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
For the #Rams to move forward they need to regain their dominance on first down.

Jared Goff: “think it always comes back to us, just doing what we do — executing,”
    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
the last 12 Super Bowl champions had a combined record of 34-24 in December.

Gurley said he intends to play but wouldn’t mislead McVay or trainers about his health just to play: “I’m not going to tell those guys I’m fine when I’m not.”

Todd Gurley, on how his knee is feeling and if he plans to play Sunday: “Yeah, I think I’ll be fine. just taking it day by day, recovering, resting, trying to feel better.” Doesn’t plan to practice tomorrow.

Todd Gurley, on the possibility of sitting out Sunday: “We’ve got a game to win, and I’m pretty sure me being out there — if I can be out there, I would put this team in a good position and help them win, so why wouldn’t I be out there if I can play?”

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
Gurley: “I’m here to play ball.”

That said, Gurley couldn’t say whether he’d be able to play if the game were tonight and he hasn’t tried to run yet this week. So it’s definitely a process and he’ll be as honest as he can with the training and coaching staffs about how the knee feels come game day.

LAC, while fighting to make the playoffs, sat Melvin Gordon till he was healthy
PIT, fighting to make the playoffs, are sitting James Conner till he is healthy
It’s odd that the Rams, who already locked up the NFCW, aren’t resting a clearly not 100% Todd Gurley till he is healthy

I wonder if that’s because the Rams are so “play action pass” dependent.

goff’s gotta be weaned off the play action at some point.

and now would be a good time to do it with the cardinals coming up.

Yeah. Given the issues with the o-line, and with defenses taking away the deep throws off of play action, it would be nice if they developed a quick passing game like teams often use against them to mitigate Donald.

I keep saying this, but here goes again. They DID do that against the Eagles. They had that short passing game (which they didn’t against the Bears). They used it well in the first half of that game then had to ditch it when they got behind in the 3rd quarter.

But it was there, and it was working (all things considered), and was so visible in fact that Collinsworth made it a repeat big theme in his commentary (he saw they were doing it and knew enough from film to see that it was a new development and said so).

I’m forgetting exactly which QBs do this really well, but it really does tend to kill the pass-rush. They basically get the snap and almost in the same motion, pass it. Usually quick crossing patterns. I just don’t see the Rams doing this, though, yes, Goff/McVay have tried shorter passes, and faster drop backs at times.

But that one-motion thing? I just don’t remember seeing it, and it’s almost always really effective against pass-rushing terrors — up the middle or from the edge.

It needs to be incorporated into the offense, with or without jumbo sets, though I think it would be most effective with at least an extra lineman.

Looking ahead to next year, I think the Rams seriously need an upgrade at center, and I’d prefer Blythe as a backup, though he’s played well overall. Sullivan, however, is probably the weak-link, and Whitworth (37) tends to decline as the season goes on, which is understandable. It may be too much for one offseason, but the Rams need help at LT, C and G, IMO — and better depth at wideout. On defense, it’s even worse: DT, ILB, OLB, corner and safety. I have no idea how this can be done under the cap, and they don’t have the draft picks, so it’s gonna take some real magic from the GM on down. Perhaps a miracle or two.

All of that said, I’m still very high on this team, present and future, etc.

I am repeating this point so often that when I repeat it I now say I have said this before, but here goes again.

    Here goes again.

THEY DID DO THAT AGAINST THE EAGLES.

They DID build in a quick short ball control passing game to exploit the coverages they were seeing.

That was a big part of the Eagles game. They had to abandon it after getting behind in the 3rd quarter, but in the first half, while using that attack to good effect, they were leading 10-6.

Driving that point home with some (again reposted again) numbers:

Here are the first 2 Rams scoring drives. I don’t include every play. Just Goff’s pass attempts.

    quarter time down distance
1 7:21 3 1 RAM 29 Jared Goff pass complete short right to Todd Gurley for 6 yards (tackle by Avonte Maddox)
1 6:43 1 20 RAM 25 Jared Goff pass complete short middle to Todd Gurley for 8 yards (tackle by Kamu Grugier-Hill)
1 6:02 2 12 RAM 33 Jared Goff pass complete short right to Robert Woods for 18 yards (tackle by Malcolm Jenkins)
1 5:04 2 6 PHI 45 Jared Goff for 7 yards (tackle by Nigel Bradham)
1 3:56 2 7 PHI 35 Jared Goff pass complete short left to Tyler Higbee for 11 yards (tackle by Rasul Douglas and Cre’von LeBlanc)
1 3:25 1 10 PHI 24 Jared Goff pass complete short left to Josh Reynolds for 6 yards (tackle by Malcolm Jenkins and Nathan Gerry)
1 2:38 2 4 PHI 18 Jared Goff pass complete short left to Robert Woods for 4 yards (tackle by Cre’von LeBlanc)
1 2:01 1 10 PHI 14 Jared Goff pass complete short middle to Todd Gurley for 9 yards (tackle by Malcolm Jenkins)

2 7:49 3 1 PHI 21 Jared Goff pass complete short left to Brandin Cooks for 7 yards (tackle by Rasul Douglas)
2 6:10 2 21 PHI 25 Jared Goff pass complete short left to Todd Gurley for 10 yards (tackle by Rasul Douglas)
2 5:26 3 11 PHI 15 Jared Goff sacked by Fletcher Cox for -8 yards

That’s 2 key series in the first half. After the 2nd one they were up 10-6.

On those 2 series Goff is 9 of 9 for 75 yards. It’s basically a designed short ball control passing game…something they did NOT use against the Bears (let alone ever before).

If I remember correctly, the 18 yarder to Woods which I did not red-bold (at 6:02 in the 1st) was actually a receiver screen thrown behind the LOS, and Woods got all the yards from that on his own. That’s from memory though.

There are a lot of other problems—with the offense and with the OL and with Goff—but they did address the whole issue of the underneath passing game, or at least in the Eagles game they did.

They may have used a quick, short passing game against the Eagles. I’m not disputing that. I just don’t think it was as effective as you do.

    Rams 1st half possessions
3 plays for 4 yds punt
    13 for 80 TD
    2 for 19 INT
    8 for 28 FG
    10 for 57 FG
    Half/game tied 13 – 13
1st drive of second half Philly goes 3 and out
    Next four Rams possessions:
    3 for 4 Punt
    3 for 8 Punt
    3 for 9 Int
    4 for 5 Downs.
At this point the Rams offense starts to improve and they start to catch up, but how much of that is due to the Eagles playing soft?

Regardless, scoring on 3 of 9 possessions including 2 INTs is not what I would consider playing well.

They were tied at the half. Before the Eagles scored at 1:07 left in the half they were leading.

They had to abandon that short attack in the 3rd quarter when they got behind. Before the end of the 4th, they scored only once in 5 straight possessions…until they revived at the end with the TD that nearly got them back in it.

The first half, there was the one INT, but they scored 3 times on 5 possessions.

I would say they came through like troopers at the end except for stupid things like JoJo fumbling and Everett not knowing you are supposed to get out of bounds in the final minute.

But they were much more consistent in the first half, scoring as I said 3 times on 5 possessions. That was the half where they were playing ball control.

    yeah.

i don’t think it was as effective as it could have been.

but that’s why they gotta use these next two games and just take live reps.

that’s the only way you get better at it.
