    1. FYI on #Rams losing Sammy Watkins: Rams were in contact with Watkins’ camp through out Monday. But at the end of the day, $48m over three years, and $30m guaranteed, was higher than they were willing to go

    2. #Rams are high on Josh Reynolds as a replacement for Watkins, and Mike Thomas will also be in the mix. But obviously wide receiver is now a position they’ll also look to the draft and free agency to address.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Rams didn’t “waste” anything on No.12. They paid him a pittance, were right about his health, got 8 TDs & 11 wins, West title, and led NFL in scoring.

Likely swap a great 2017 2nd for a decent 2019 comp. Learned more about him, themselves, and didn’t sell the farm. No regrets.

    Alden Gonzalez@Alden_Gonzalez
Rams had a feeling that WR Sammy Watkins might price himself out of LA. It’s the risk they assumed by tagging DB Lamarcus Joyner instead of him. Watkins’ market got too high, and ultimately he signed a 3-year, $48M deal with the Chiefs. Now the Rams are likely to replace him internally, with Josh Reynolds, last year’s fourth-round pick, serving as the deep threat alongside Robert Woods and Cooper Kupp.

The Rams felt DB Lamarcus Joyner was the guy they could least afford to lose, but they — especially Sean McVay — valued WR Sammy Watkins. They spent a second-round pick on him with the hope he’d be there for more than one season, and they believed his numbers would be much better given an entire offseason in McVay’s system. After the expected departure of Tavon Austin, Rams would have about $35M in cap space.

I thought Watkins might command $13 million per year or so. That was too conservative, apparentl

The Rams have a good group of young WRs. I wouldn’t panic. They’ll be fine.

I don’t see anybody panicking. The Rams would be better with Watkins than without him. How much difference it will make in Wins, nobody can say.

The #Rams valued Sammy Watkins based on reality. The #Chiefs will pay him based on potential. The latter wins again

There was always risk trading for Sammy Watkins one yr before free agency. That risk just came to fruition for #Rams

I had a discussion with VinnyB [about Ogletree] and he told me that this was about Wade. Wade gave a frank assessment of personnel and obviously it wasn’t good for AO. Wade was banging the table for the CBs.

No surprise here, but it seems Wade wasn’t in on the decision to extend AO during the season. But he was instrumental in AO leaving.

Vinny said there was a lesson learned by the Rams on this.

VInny also said the Rams were not going to tag Watkins regardless of what some people thought.

They didn’t see him as worth that kind of money. (me: guess they were done with the TruJ type deals and had other things to spend money on).

They were planning on letting him test the market and hoped to sign him for something reasonable.

Not sure where Vinny gets his info from but that was a surprise to me.

Is it fair to say the Rams LBs were the weak link on that D?
    Yes? No?

has Austin been officially released yet?

    Vincent Bonsignore@DailyNewsVinny
not allowed to before the 14th

    @andrwphoto
Vinny. Curious. Why is it that they have to wait till the 14th for Tavon?

    Vincent Bonsignore@DailyNewsVinny
Applies for any player with guarantees remaining on contract. For instance, Richard Sherman had no guarantees remaining on Seahawks contract

not just the wrs but gerald everett is still here.

don’t know how good he can be, but they spent a second round pick on him.

maybe we start to see more two tight end sets. maybe everett can help stretch the field? time for the younger guys to step up.

mmm. dunno. that second round pick coulda been used on a pass rusher. or an offensive lineman…

it sucks at least a little.

If so, Trumaine will make more by himself than Marcus Peters and Aqib Talib combined next season for #Rams. Funny how it works sometimes

    Ryan Kartje@Ryan_Kartje
In 2017, the Rams paid top corner Trumaine Johnson $16.472 million under the franchise tag. In 2018, the Rams will pay their top three corners — Aqib Talib, Marcus Peters, Nickell Robey-Coleman — just under $18 million COMBINED.

If Robey-Coleman plays as well as he did last yr, his contract is a huge bargain. Slot corners are crucial in today’s NFL. NRC is a good one

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
Depending on timing/situations, Rams could end up facing Case Keenum (Denver), Sam Bradford (Arizona) and Nick Foles (Philadelphia) next season.

    Wade Phillips@sonofbum
It’s expensive agency, Not free agency.

    Joe Curley@vcsjoecurley
With that secondary, the Rams are going to be ready for whatever the Niners are able to put around Jimmy G. LAR remain one step ahead of SF in this process.

    Alden Gonzalez@Alden_Gonzalez
Rams could afford to lose Derek Carrier, who is signing with Jon Gruden’s Raiders. They’d like to run more multiple-TE sets this season, but are expected to have Temarrick Hemingway return from a leg injury to be their third TE, behind Tyler Higbee and Gerald Everett.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
Good luck against the #LARams rush one, drop 10 defense next year.

Cut Aaron Donald loose, let portfolio of DBs cover.

    LBs optional.

This kind of comment always strikes me as self-contradictory.

If the Rams were high on Reynolds, they’d be set at WR. Semantics, maybe, but still. To me…being “high” on somebody ought to mean being “sold” on them. And if they are going to still fish around for WR help, that implies that they are not fully confident that Reynolds is going to be what they want him to be.
