A pre free agency primer: there are 324 players currently on NFL rosters who signed during free agency last year. Only four of those players (1.2 pct) made the 2019 Pro Bowl, and two were special teamers : C Mike Pouncey, TE Eric Ebron, RS Andre Roberts, and ST Michael Thomas.==
And being the best, or one of the best, at your position also helps. https://t.co/kLZaP04L5v

yeah. this is the key. if he can take another step and be an elite safety. and weddle can be just a modest improvement over lamarcus. defensive backfield could be set. i think weddle could be very good for jj to take that next step.

NFL teams have fans and media trained (brainwashed?): when player is released with tens of millions vanishing on his contract, reaction is not about player, but about how much cash/Cap that clears for team.March 10, 2019 at 7:43 pm #98726znModeratorDavid Frum@davidfrum

The one-year deal route always made sense for Dante Fowler Jr. He gets to further establish a bigger market for himself in a system that suits him with a #Rams team he enjoys playing for and in a city he really liked upon getting traded here.Lindsey Thiry@LindseyThiry
On Rams needs: Yes, they need to bulk up OL depth, but if Saffold leaves in FA, Joe Noteboom can slide into that spot. Micah Kiser is a candidate to start at ILB, but Rams certainly must find some ILBs for depth, if not a starter.==

Just an FYI on #Rams DL Michael Brockers: I’ve been told pretty emphatically there are no plans to release or trade him.March 11, 2019 at 1:39 pm #98779znModeratorHow re-signing Dante Fowler Jr. impacts Rams' offseason plans
OLB isn’t off the table in Round 1 of the draft
The Rams filled a major need at outside linebacker by keeping Fowler in the mix for another year, but that doesn’t take the position off the table in the draft. Fowler is more or less a short-term solution with the possibility of becoming a long-term option if he performs well in 2019. In no way should Fowler’s return cause the Rams to pass up a dynamic pass rusher in the draft if someone like Brian Burns were to somehow fall to them at No. 31.
What re-signing Fowler does do is free up the Rams to take the best player available rather than feeling forced to draft an outside pass rusher. If the best player is a nose tackle or a left guard, they can take him without being pressured into selecting an outside linebacker.

They also redshirted/developed sixth-round pick Sebastian Joseph-Day last year, a guy they believe has a future.Him being on the active roster was reflective of what they thought of him and the confidence they had he could perform if called upon. But the ideal situation was for him to learn and develop, which he was able to do. It’ll be interesting to see that development in OTA’s/camp

The #Raiders are expected to sign for former #Rams franchise player, safety Lamarcus Joyner, sources say. Got the full numbers on the Mitch Morse deal with the #Bills and it’s a whopper: four years, $44.5 million with $26.5 million guaranteed. He gets $19.5M in Year 1 and $28.375M by Year 2. The $11.125M APY is the new bar for centers. https://t.co/mLPGMVzhTN

If a Morse can get that, what can Saffold get?
.
Joyner’s deal is for four years at around $10.5 million per year, according to ESPN.
That was enough for a 3rd round comp pick last year, but maybe not enough this year?- This reply was modified 5 years, 8 months ago by Agamemnon.

I;ve been hearing it’s more like a 4th.

I checked over-the-cap, $10.5M. Of course, this isn’t written is stone. https://overthecap.com/projecting-the-2019-compensatory-picks/

Looking at some of these deals flying around, the #Rams did well to get Eric Weddle when they did. As for Dante Fowler, he didn’t come cheap. But he’s also a known quantity to #Rams on a 1-year deal rather than an unknown with big guaranteed $$ and multiple yearsDL Jerry Tillery is a prospect of interest for #Rams, who met with him at combine. Anyone questioning his dedication to football, just keep in mind he played last 8 games of ’18 with a torn labrum.
Tillery kept the severity of the injury on the DL save for a handful of people. He could have shut his season down and had surgery to start preparing for draft. Instead he gutted the season out then participated in every drill at combine before finally having surgery

If the Rams made no other moves on defense, it would look like this.DT: Donald
NT: Brockers
DE: JFM
OLBs: Fowler + Ebukam/Okoronkwo
ILBs: Littleton + Kiser
CBs: Peters, Talib, NRC
S: JJ3, WeddleThat’s a decent unit and more moves are sure to come.
Gary Klein@LATimesklein
FWIW, with caveat that math was not my best subject, in 2017 Rams paid CB Trumaine Johnson $16.7 million. Last year, entire starting secondary cost $24.8 million. In 2019, with starting secondary that features 13 combined Pro Bowl appearances, cost will be $23.2Lance Zierlein@LanceZierlein
Smart NFL teams use free agency to caulk up the roster enough so that they don’t have to reach on draft day. When teams have gaping holes in your roster headed into the draft, they put themselves at the mercy of potential trade-aheads and below average for their actual pick(s)==

March 12, 2019 at 5:30 am #98844AgamemnonParticipantPound for pound, they don’t come much tougher than Lamarcus Joyner. #Raiders are getting a good, solid, hard nosed football player. And that’s looking like a fourth-round comp luck coming back to #Rams for 2020 draft

Yeah I think the numbers changed this year and went up with the cap.
March 12, 2019 at 12:11 pm #98860Billy_TParticipantTorn labrum? Wow. I have one now. It’s freakin painful just to reach for a book. The range of motion is seriously limited.
I can’t imagine having to play on the defensive line with that injury.
. . .
Was hoping the Rams would get Morse. It may well be that their cap space is too small to add anyone until a few more rounds of signings.
Not really unhappy they lost Joyner. But losing Saffold, if it happens, will hurt that line. He’s probably their best run-blocker and is seriously stout. Might be the strongest guy on the team.
They probably needed to re-sign Fowler, but as mentioned above, that won’t change the need for getting another edge or two.
It likely won’t come to this, but I’d be seriously conflicted if Lawrence and Burns were there for the Rams at #31. I’d love to have both of them on the team and it would be hard to choose. Probably Burns, by a nose. If they get Shelton, that makes the decision easier.
They have more holes to fill than I had hoped.
