    DOWNTOWN RAMS [DTR]@DowntownRams
Against an 0-8 Bengals team the defense was lethargic to end the game. The point is this team is ready for the bye period.

    Cameron DaSilva@camdasilva
The Rams leaned heavily on 11 personnel yesterday, which

    A) Makes sense, given the Bengals’ CB injuries
    B) Was slightly surprising after Cooks went down

    Stats to note:

    – Rams are 24th in the league in 1st quarter scoring (just 3.1 ppg) but 2nd in the league in scoring (behind Houston) in quarters 2-4 at 23.6 ppg. Slow starts have hurt them….

    – Points differential: +40, 8th in the league. They were +109 through 8 games last year (8-0).

    – Rams passer rating differential ( called “the mother of all NFL predictive stats” ) is currently -2.1 (87.1 vs. 89.2 allowed); this is 19th in the NFL. They were 11th last year.

    – Rams are 12th in red zone scoring (61.3%)

    – Gurley is on pace for 761 rushing yards (50.7/game)

    – Everett and Higbee have 44 combined catches (57 all of 2018)

    – Cooper Kupp has already moved into the Rams top 20 in receiving yards (2,227) in just 31 games

    – Zuerlein needs 7 FG for 200 in his career.

    – Cory Littleton leads the team in INT, PD, fumble recoveries and tackles…

    – the Rams have 14 sacks from edge defenders after having 6 all of last year (and 23.5 in 2017).

    – Among head coaches with at least 40 NFL games, Sean McVay is 4th with a .725 win percentage.

Biggest disappointment from the Bengals game: Penalties. The CIN game is a good example of how dumb (and some bad) penalties can keep a lesser opponent in the game.

    PFF’s highest-graded @RamsNFL defender from Week 8?

    CB Troy Hill

Knowing who’s across from him now, you could make a strong case that Hill’s one of the keys to a second half push. Will be busy, as he was in a tenacious effort yesterday

    ==

what would your top 5 head coach ranking look like?

    Brett Kollmann@BrettKollmann
    As of week 8…

    1: Belichick
    2: Payton
    3: Reich
    4: Shanahan
5: Reid (even with the clock issues, he’s still amazing)

McVay, Carroll, and Harbaugh are all close though. It’s a tough call.

    Bate@NoPlanB_
Cooper Kupp finished the first half of yesterday’s game with 165 receiving yards; most in a half since Marshall Faulk (168) vs. the Bears on 12/26/1999.

What’s crazier is that 152 of Faulk’s yards came in the second quarter alone. 106 on three catches in a 4-play span.

I wrote a piece at PFF years ago that concluded that while teams target bigger players near the goal line more often (size bias!), the efficiency (converting EZ targs into TDs) between bigger and smaller players is close to a wash

    PFF
    https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-week-8-team-of-the-week

No cornerback was targeted more than Los Angeles’ Troy Hill in Week 8, and he still finished second in overall grade at his position in Week 8. He allowed just three receptions from 11 targets for 45 yards, zero touchdowns and two first downs. He also recorded three forced incompletions and zero missed tackles in coverage.

“Something like that only comes about when you’ve got 11 guys executing.” @CooperKupp credits his teammates for his record-setting night.

The 2019 #LARams’ regular season is halfway over.

Todd Gurley has 311 rushing yards.

Todd Gurley ties pair of Hall of Famers

Gurley scored one touchdown on Sunday, finding the end zone in the third quarter on a 3-yard carry. It was the 63rd touchdown of his young career, which tied him with a pair of Hall of Fame running backs. His 63 touchdowns are tied for the second-most by a player 25 years or younger, matching Jim Brown and Walter Payton, as well as Maurice Jones-Drew. Emmitt Smith is No. 1 on the list with a whopping 75 touchdowns before turning 25.

So it seems that the Rams will roll over quite a bit of cash to 2020 and roll with their current offensive line and Troy Hill/Darious Williams at cornerback. Internal improvements will have to be significant over final eight games.

    J.B. Long@JB_Long
At the midway point, the #LARams rank 4th in defensive efficiency & have allowed the 2nd-fewest explosive plays.

That’s with 1.5 games of Jalen Ramsey & includes an abysmal performance against TB.

If the defense can replicate (or improve) in the 2nd half, L.A. has a chance.

    Sosa K@QBsMVP
    Take this as you will:

    Aqib Talib: 29 targets, 18 completions, 62.1% completion, 231 yards, 8.0 yards/target, 3 TD’s, 121.5 rating, 17.6% missed tackles

    Troy Hill: 20 targets, 9 completions, 45% completion, 103 yards, 5.2 yards/target, 0 TD’s, 61.0 rating, 0% missed tackles

    The Athletic LA@TheAthleticLA
Why did the Rams trade Aqib Talib? They knew he was leaving anyway, they like their young corners and the chance to create significant salary-cap room was too much to pass up

Progress report on Rams OLB Clay Matthews, who the Rams hope to have back in Week 10: “He’s gotten all of that stuff taken out off of his jaw and he’s feeling good,” Sean McVay said.

    Stu Jackson@StuJRams
Rams HC Sean McVay on LB Clay Matthews (broken jaw), whom McVay is hopeful to get back after the bye week:

“He’s gotten all of that stuff taken out off of his jaw and he’s feeling good.”

McVay said they will take things day-by-day next week.

    More McVay on Matthews:

“I really just think it’s going to be a matter of how quickly and how comfortable does he feel as far as, ‘All right, I’m ready to go,’ and play full contact…in the absence of some of that restrictive protection that he’s had. He’s on track for that.”

McVay on WR Brandin Cooks (concussion):

“He’s feeling good. He’s very aware of what’s going on and he can talk about what occurred pre-concussion.”

Team is sending Cooks to a specialist in Pittsburgh and hopes to get more clarity on his status from that.

That’s Cook’s 4th head injury since the Super Bowl.

I think it’s time for him to start thinking about life after football, and what that’s gonna look like.

It was just 20 months ago that the Rams started a grand experiment and brought in Marcus Peters, Aqib Talib and Ndamukong Suh. Doom was predicted. Instead everyone got along and they went to the Super Bowl. Yet now they’re all gone. You never can predict sports.
