I have seen some sources say the 6 M guaranteed roster bonus does not transfer to a new team if the Rams trade him.

This article seems to think it WOULD transfer to the acquiring team in a trade.

I am not sure why that would be the case.

Rams Still Hoping To Trade QB Nick Foles, Jets Haven’t Inquired

    link: http://nfltraderumors.co/rams-still-hoping-trade-qb-nick-foles-jets-havent-inquired/

Jason Cole of B/R, citing an NFL source, reports that the Rams are hoping to trade QB Nick Foles before the start of the 2016 season.

Cole points out that the Rams have plenty of depth at quarterback with No. 1 overall pick Jared Goff, Case Keenum and Sean Mannion, which makes Foles obviously expendable.

Some have speculated that the Jets could have interest in Foles should he be available, considering that their standoff with Ryan Fitzpatrick is still ongoing. However, the Jets have yet to inquire about his availability.

One issue in regards to a Foles’ trade is the fact that $7.75 million of his contract is already guaranteed for the 2016 season. Some teams may view his salary as prohibitive in a potential trade, and elect to wait to see if the Rams will release him in the coming months.

As of now, Foles counts $8.75 million against the Rams’ 2016 salary cap, which breaks down to a $6 million roster bonus that is guaranteed, $1 million of signing bonus proration and $1.75 million in base salary. Releasing Foles outright would result in a cap hit of $7 million.

If the Rams were able to find a trade partner, they would pick up $6.75 million in cap space and just $2 million in dead money. Although, Cole says teams may be reluctant to trade a draft pick for him at this point in time.

Foles, 27, came over in a trade from the Eagles that sent Sam Bradford to Philadelphia. He had one year remaining on his rookie contract when the Rams signed him to a two-year, $24 million extension back in August of last year.

In 2015, Foles completed 56.4 percent of his passes for 2,052 yards, seven touchdowns and 10 interceptions. Pro Football Focus has him rated as the No. 36 quarterback out of 37 qualifying players

I thought I had that figured out. But, maybe not.

Breaking down Nick Foles’ $26.068 million extension
    Posted August 12, 2015 ·

St. Louis Rams quarterback Nick Foles’ two-year contract extension is worth $26.068 million and includes a $3 million signing bonus, according to a source with knowledge of Foles’ deal.

    Foles got $13.792 million guaranteed.

In 2015, he’s due a fully guaranteed $1.042 million base salary and has $6.068 million in total compensation with a $4.068 million salary-cap figure.

The deal has no offset language in the first year.

Foles gets a $2 million roster bonus on Sept. 1. That’s guaranteed for skill and injury at signing, guaranteed for salary cap if on the roster on Aug. 15.
Foles has an annual $4.5 million in not likely to be earned incentives based on Pro Bowl; p/t + wins or playoffs or playoff wins; p/t + wins or playoffs or playoff wins and Club/player rankings.
Foles has workout bonuses of $6,240 and $20,000 in 2015.
In 2016, he has a $.175 million base salary and a $8.75 million salary-cap figure. The salary is guaranteed for injury at signing and skill and cap if on the roster the fifth day of the 2016 league year and includes offset language.

He’s due a $6 million roster bonus on the third day of the 2016 league year, guaranteed for skill and injury at signing, guaranteed for cap if on the roster on Aug. 15, 2016 and has no offset language.

In 2017, he has a $13.25 million salary cap figure and a $10.75 million nonguaranteed base salary.

He has a $1.5 million roster bonus due on the third day of the 2017 league year.
Finally found the exact Foles contract. The offset language, for his salary this year, is the key. This means that like Finnegan, the Rams can get some or all of his salary back, even if they cut him. A trade takes them off the hook. The other team honors Foles’ contract.

There is still $1 million of the $3 million signing bonus left on the books. The best the Rams can do is gain $.75 million and that might not come this year. If he is cut, the offset kicks in next year.

It appears the $1 million of the $3 million signing bonus doesn’t have to be booked this year. The Rams can wait until next year if they want. See below.

The green bit above might make the difference. I remember Snead said something in an interview, to the effect that people don’t really know contracts and they weren’t necessarily on the hook for Foles. But, I never saw or could find anything after that. I always assumed that it was already paid, but maybe not. Maybe it gets paid on the 15th of August?

So, if it is already guaranteed, but payment isn’t due yet, then, yes, it could transfer in a trade. imo

Of course, the Rams could pay a portion to help the trade get done.

I figured the Rams had already paid the 6M, but if it isn’t due until the 15 of August? Then if Foles is traded before then the other team gets to pay. If they cut him, it is all on the Rams. We will see.

August 15, is 2 games into the preseason.

But, it also says(above) the roster bonus was due on the 3rd day of the league year. That was March 11th this year. ??????????

2016 Roster Bonus: $6M (3/11/16, guaranteed) This from sportac. Not due, just guaranteed.

Where is JT when you need him. 😉
