Matt’s problem with ‘White Fragility’ is that:
“the author thinks people are defined by their race or by the perception of their race, that these categories are inflexible, and the only think you can hope to do to combat the ongoing problem of racism is to relentlessly focus on race in a life-long program of striving to be less white”
I doubt if thats how the author would phrase things, but leaving out the nitpicking, I dont have a problem with ‘relentlessly’ thinking about race and privilege and thinking of the issue as a lifelong endeavor. Its just not that hard to do. It doesn’t mean I cant also think about Class and Gender and the Rams and Tapirs.
I’d rather Matt had said, “Lest never ignore Class, because we obsessively focus on corporate-versions of race-discussions. There’s always a danger the Corps will commodify and de-fang our dissent in various Pro-NeoLiberal ways…”
Matt’s still on my team, though. No big thing. Just internet babble.
