    Review: Vasily Grossman’s “Stalingrad”
    by Charles R. Larson

“It’s a small miracle that we have an English translation of Vasily Grossman’s novel, Stalingrad, given the huge amount of restorative work Robert Chandler and Elizabeth Chandler had to undertake to piece the novel together. They don’t tell us how many years were involved in examining multiple versions and printed editions of Grossman’s thousand-page novel, but in both the introduction and an afterword Robert tells us that “Grossman battled editors and censors throughout his career,” and that he had to tote the line for what Stalin himself regarded as appropriate Russian realism. It may have helped that in the midst of the appearance of the various editions of Stalingrad (1952-1956), Stalin died (1953). What we do know for certain is that….see link

    Thanks for posting that, WV.

I read his Life and Fate, and thought it was brilliant. Then I read about Grossman.

If you’re interested, The Bones of Berdichev: The Life and Fate of Vasily Grossman by John and Carol Garrard, is excellent non-fiction, and highly moving.

I bought the latter as a remainder, and need to reread it.

Stalingrad sounds fantastic . . . though I usually steer clear of massive books. May make an exception for this one. I think New York Review of Books has it in paper back.

I read Grossman’s bio at wiki. Interesting life, for sure.

I was tempted, but aint no way I’m reading that 1000-page tome.

I’ll wait for the japanese-tv anime version 🙂
