Rams have tough decisions to make as they work to trim roster to 53

    Gary Klein

    http://www.latimes.com/sports/rams/la-sp-rams-20170901-story.html

Some of the 37 players who could be waived by Saturday afternoon’s deadline seemed obvious. Six or seven would not be.

“Definitely going to be some tough discussions toward the end of that, when you’re looking at in between that 46 and 53,” coach Sean McVay said after the loss to the Packers. “But those are good problems to have.”

Unlike several NFL teams that released the names of the first wave of players cut, the Rams on Friday were mum about their moves.

But running back Aaron Green, a member of the Rams practice squad last season, posted a messages to his Twitter account that indicated he might have been waived.

Green, who had competed with former USC running back Justin Davis for a spot as the third running back behind starter Todd Gurley and Malcolm Brown, posted two messages.

“Thank you @RamsNFL for an opportunity of a lifetime! The show goes on!” he tweeted, along with, “Enjoyed my time here in LA, excited to see where I end up next!”

Like all NFL teams, the Rams are informing players they are released while also scanning the waiver wire to possibly fortify the roster with players let go by other clubs.

Rams could have the most expensive seat in America
The Rams are fifth among the 32 NFL teams in the claiming order, the same order in which teams selected in this year’s draft. (The Tennessee Titans had the fifth pick in the first round as part of the trade that enabled the Rams to move to the top of the 2016 draft to select quarterback Jared Goff.)

“You kind of have a projected ideal 53 going into this game and then you’ve got to take into consideration some of the guys that would be possible claims for us, especially being able to be in that fifth spot where you might take advantage of that,” McVay said.

The Rams also will sign 10 players who have cleared waivers to the practice squad.

The Rams’ roster decisions could come at several positions, including the defensive line. The position group has been in flux because of a season-ending knee injury suffered by lineman Dominique Easley and Aaron Donald’s holdout because of a contract dispute.

McVay said Thursday that he was “definitely optimistic” that Donald would report in the coming week. Rams representatives had met with Donald’s representatives in Atlanta on Wednesday, a person with knowledge of the situation said.

Quarterback Jared Goff and backup Sean Mannion are on the roster, but veteran Dan Orlovsky would be a luxury. Orlovsky’s contract is guaranteed if he is on the roster the first week, so he could be cut and then possibly re-signed if the Rams did not use the spot elsewhere.

Davis, an undrafted free agent who got workhorse carries throughout the preseason, appears to have made the team after overcoming two fumbles in his debut against the Dallas Cowboys. Rookie fullback Sam Rogers, a sixth-round draft pick, carved a role with special teams play.

If the Rams go with six receivers, they would probably be Tavon Austin, Robert Woods, Sammy Watkins, Pharoh Cooper and rookies Cooper Kupp and Josh Reynolds. Second-year pro Mike Thomas is suspended for the first four games.

The broken fibula sustained by tight end Temarrick Hemingway leaves the Rams with three tight ends: rookie Gerald Everett, second-year pro Tyler Higbee and veteran Cory Harkey.

The starting offensive line consists of tackles Andrew Whitworth and Rob Havenstein, guards Rodger Saffold and Jamon Brown and center John Sullivan. Andrew Donnal, who has been sidelined because of a leg injury, Cody Wichmann, Austin Blythe, Darrell Williams and Pace Murphy are competing for the remaining spots.

Assuming Donald reports in time, he will join Michael Brockers, Ethan Westbrooks, Tanzel Smart and Tyrunn Walker. Louis Trinca-Pasat, Morgan Fox, Mike Purcell also are competing for spots.

Alec Ogletree, Mark Barron, Connor Barwin and Robert Quinn are starting linebackers and Josh Forrest and rookie Samson Ebukam appear to be locks. Cory Littleton, Matt Longacre, Nic Grigsby, Bryce Hager and rookie Ejuan Price are competing for roles.

Trumaine Johnson and Kayvon Webster are the starting cornerbacks, and Nickell Robey-Coleman the nickel back. Mike Jordan is a back-up on the outside. Troy Hill is suspended for the first two games.

Maurice Alexander and Lamarcus Joyner are the starters at safety. Cody Davis and rookie John Johnson have roles and Marqui Christian and Blake Countess could figure in the plan.

Punter Johnny Hekker, kicker Greg Zuerlein and snapper Jake McQuaide are the specialists.

Lots of moves today, and the Rams will certainly be keeping an eye on it all. They could still seek help for the right side of their offensive line. Also, TE, RB, DL, CB.

September 7: At midnight ET, the Top 51 Rule expires for all NFL clubs.

This is when all teams must be under the regular Cap. Spotrac show the Rams with an Est. Cap Space (All): $-1,118,663. Spotrac seems more up to date than “Over the Cap”.

How the NFL waiver wire works: Rules, deadlines, priority order, more

Here’s everything you need to know about the NFL’s waiver wire system.
    by Jeremy Reisman@DetroitOnLion Sep 3, 2017, 8:30am EDT

Cut day has come and gone and now all 32 NFL teams now sit with a comfortable 53-man roster. But the team building is far from over. With literally over 1,000 players now out of a job, it’s each general manager’s duty to scour the market and add players that could help their team.

However, there are rules to be had. Not every player can immediately join any team. That would be chaos. Instead, the NFL devised the waiver wire, which fantasy players are probably more than familiar with. But the rules aren’t all the same, so let’s break down exactly what the NFL waiver wire is.
    What is the waiver wire?

The NFL waiver wire is a system to make sure that teams are given a fair shot at young players in the league that have been cut from another team. When a player is waived, there is a 24-hour period in which they are on “waivers.” Any NFL team that would like to add that player can then put in a claim, and after the waiver claim period is up, the team with the highest priority is awarded the player. He must immediately join their 53-man roster; he cannot be moved to a practice squad if claimed.
How is waiver wire priority determined?

From the first day of the league year until the conclusion of Week 3 of the regular season, waiver wire priority is determined by how teams finished the prior season—or to put simply, the draft order. This system is created this way to benefit teams that were really bad last year. The Cleveland Browns finished 1-15 last year, therefore they’ll have the No. 1 priority of any waived players until Week 3 of the season.

The Detroit Lions finished with the 21st pick in the 2017 NFL Draft, therefore their priority is 21. The Lions will only be able to add a player via waivers if the 20 teams in front of them pass.

Starting Week 4 of the regular season, waiver priority is determined by records of the current season. For example, if a team is 0-3 after three weeks, they’ll likely have the No. 1 waiver wire priority (pending tiebreakers).
Who is subject to the waiver wire?

Just because a player is released doesn’t mean they have to go through waivers. If a player has four or more accrued seasons, they are simply released of their current contract and immediately become a free agent able to sign with any team at any time.

But if a player has three or fewer seasons in the NFL, they must go through waivers. That’s why you’ll see some players listed as “released” (not subject to waivers) vs. “waived” (on waivers).

    What does waived/injured mean?

A player who is “waived/injured” is subject to waivers all the same, but the team is notifying to the rest of the league that this player has suffered an injury. It is usually common courtesy for teams to let these player go through waivers unclaimed, but it is not against the rules to put in a claim.

If the player is claimed, he must go on the team’s 53-man roster, like usual. If unclaimed, the team that waived him has two options: either place the player on injured reserve or come to an injury settlement and allow them to become a free agent.

When must teams put in their claims by?
    .
Normally, when a player is waived, teams have 24 hours to put in a claim. But it’s a little different during these 53-man cuts. Teams have until noon on Sunday to put in their waiver claims, even if a player wasn’t waived until the 4 p.m. ET deadline on Saturday.
    .
At noon, teams will be notified of which players they were awarded then and which players went unclaimed.

Where does the practice squad fit in?

Any player eligible for the practice squad must first go through waivers to make the 10-man roster. If a player makes it unclaimed through waivers, he is then eligible to join the practice squad of any team he desires. Typically if there’s mutual interest, they’ll rejoin the team that waived them out of courtesy and familiarity, but it is not required.

If a player is claimed by a team, he may not go to their practice squad. To make it on their practice squad, he must be waived again and go unclaimed by all other teams.

For this weekend, teams can start adding unclaimed waived players to their practice squad starting at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday.

Odd Mike Jordan in Cleveland. All I can remember is another Michael Jordan going against Cleveland in the NBA playoffs with a shot over Craig Ehlo if correct to send the Cavaliers packing.

Spotrac is close, but the official numbers are a bit better. Either way, the Rams will need to find some cap relief to get within the cap by Sept. 7. (going from 51 to 53) They will also need money for the Practice Squad and to cover players going on IR.
    .
Probably ~$4 million to take care of the whole year.
    51 – 53 man roster = $465,000 x 2 (min. wage rookies)= $930,000
    Practice Squad = $1.152,000 (10 players x $7200 per game x 16 games.)
Injured Reserve = ~$3,000,000 more than already used.
    Total = $5,082,000 – $738,000(current space) = $4,344,000

Los Angeles has made a series of minor moves over the last two days, maxing out the 53-man roster and 10-man practice squad.

Sept. 4: After claiming quarterback Brandon Allen off waivers from the Jaguars, the Rams waived cornerback Kevin Peterson from the active roster as a corresponding move. The Rams also signed defensive tackle Louis Trinca-Pasat to their practice squad on Monday after he cleared waivers.

Sept 5: Los Angeles signed tight end Johnny Mundt and cornerback Kevin Peterson to its practice squad. As corresponding moves, the Rams terminated the practice squad contracts of offensive lineman Michael Dunn and defensive tackle Louis Trinca-Pasat.

Los Angeles’ active roster now stands at 53 players and its practice squad stands at 10.

I have the Rams with 6 players on the IR. The Rams don’t show Laskey on their official site, but they do show Marquez. Spotrac shows Laskey, but not Marquez. I can’t find where either have had an injury settlement. I am not sure if they will keep Forrest and Tillery on the IR or if they will eventually come to a settlement.
    .
It looks like the Rams will not add Grigsby to the Practice Squad. But he was one of last players released, so they still might add him.
