That was a disappointing opener, but everything should be OK as long as Matthew Stafford’s arm is fine. His arm is fine, right?

Poor Arthur Smith. After everything he’s overcome in his life, the hits somehow still keep coming from a media empire stacked against him. First, Edward R. Murrow trades away Matt Ryan. Then, Walter Cronkite delivers him the 30th-ranked defense in the league. All of a sudden, it’s Week 1, the Falcons have a 26-10 fourth-quarter lead and Ida B. Wells orders him to stop covering Michael Thomas. Then it’s fourth-and-1 late in the fourth quarter and a first down is all Smith needs to win the game, but Hunter S. Thompson thinks he should play it safe and punt instead.

“You guys wrote our obituary back in May,” whined Smith after he and his team turtled under pressure. “You’ll continue to write our obituary. Who cares?”

So Jeff Schultz did.

That’s not how the start of a title defense is supposed to go. On a brutally steamy night in Los Angeles, the Rams got run out of their own building by a Bills team that looked like the better, hungrier group. There was no one single culprit in the 31-10 beatdown: Matthew Stafford threw three interceptions, the offensive line was manhandled, Aaron Donald was neutralized, and the secondary surrendered too many big plays. After the game, Sean McVay said his squad had been humbled on a night that began as a celebration: “We weren’t ready to go. I take a lot of pride in that, and that’s on me.”

Preseason ranking: 3

Rookie who stood out: LB Keir Thomas

Only four rookies played Thursday against the Bills, and Thomas, a rookie free agent from Florida State, was the lone first-year player to play a non-special-teams snap. This is not really surprising, given that the Rams’ first draft pick was in the third round, and that top selection, guard Logan Bruss, tore an ACL during a preseason game. Cornerback Cobie Durant, linebacker Jake Hummel and running back Kyren Williams each played on special teams, with Williams injuring his right ankle on his one snap. He has a high ankle sprain that required surgery and will sideline him for six to eight weeks. — Sarah Barshop

Last week: Loss at Buffalo, 31–10 (Thursday)

A troubling outing for the Rams, who are looking vulnerable at the start of their title defense campaign. While a team this dotted with superstars is never going to be out of it, especially in the NFC, it will be worth watching to see how Sean McVay & Co. regroup.

3. LOS ANGELES RAMS

The defending Super Bowl Champions are already being disrespected! Before we go overboard, remember that the Rams were the No. 4 seed a year ago and needed Matthew Stafford to up his play from an 80.7 regular season PFF grade to 89.5 in the postseason to go on the run that they did. The Rams also lost critical parts of the roster, as Robert Woods, Odell Beckham Jr., Sebastian Joseph-Day and Von Miller now play elsewhere. The Rams added Allen Robinson and Bobby Wagner to help offset those losses, but there’s a good chance that, at best, they have taken a sideways step in an offseason where several contenders got better.
