Studying New England’s suffocating defensive effort from 2019, I was amazed by the simplicity of the team’s scheme. The Pats are a man-to-man team with a weekly game plan that prominently features man-free coverage (Cover 1). Although Belichick will utilize a few different versions of the coverage, the scheme is essentially a four-man rush with five defenders in man coverage aided by a low-hole defender and a post safety. The low-hole defender could be a linebacker or safety, based on ideal matches, but the premise of the coverage remains the same: The Patriots take away the middle of the field and force opponents to throw the ball outside of the numbers. Those low-percentage throws make it hard for quarterbacks to string together completions, routinely putting the offense behind the chains in key moments. In addition, the sticky coverage eliminates the layups (quick slants, bubble screens and stick routes) that are available in zone and makes opponents earn their yards on every pass attempt.

When I’ve asked opposing coaches how the Patriots are able to succeed with such a simple coverage scheme, I’ve had multiple defensive coordinators tell me their attention to detail, discipline and mastery through repetition enable them to win without tricking opponents. The Pats have seen every conceivable tactic from offensive coordinators, and their preparation against the gimmicks gives them a decided advantage on game day. Basically, they know how the offense will attack them by reducing the number of coverages that they employ, and that makes each game come down to simple execution.

Couple points here.
– Ramsey was frustrated to get contract Qs, explains its because he asked his agent to keep him in the dark re. negotiations until done. He isn’t worried & only wants one phone call.
– He says Rams, Mulugheta have a longtime understanding about the contract.

McVay and Snead also declined to get into discussions, with McVay only sharing that there are no updates yet. However, esp. if understanding between team/agent is already in place, big deals can come together in a matter of days.

As if we weren’t already pretty certain the Rams are going to extend Jalen Ramsey long-term, check the marketing – Ramsey is hosting the team’s “virtual tailgate” alongside two other team pillars in Aaron Donald and Jared Goff.

Aaron Donald says players have been having a lot of conversations internally about not exposing themselves to high-risk or group situations when they leave the facility every day. Says they know there will always be risk in a contact sport but job outside has to be staying safe.

The NFLPA today sent players a phone number for them to report NFL teams’ violations of the agreed upon COVID-19 protocols, sources say. Players can text the number but they will remain anonymous. The union can file a grievance on players’ behalves for perceived violations.

Woods says he is “ready to get paid” and of course he wants it to be by the Rams.

During the off-season, Robert Woods has not made excuses to stay in football shape. He said he found some hills in the neighborhood and jumped around to different open high school football fields to train.

Woods says there are a lot of safety precautions at the practice facility including pre-ordering meals the night before and getting up to three temperature checks even before they get on the field.

Rams WR Robert Woods says after they get through the abnormal nature of COVID-19 safety protocols in the building, that workouts and walk throughs on the practice field have felt similar to past seasons. “Once we’re going it’s actually normal,” Woods said. “We’re huddling up, only one person talking, that’s our quarterback Jared. We’re full go on the field and normal just like always for a walk-thru.”

Rams WR Robert Woods said the offseason throwing sessions with QB Jared Goff, other skill position players earlier this summer were “very big” because they felt like player-ran practices. Goff and Woods both said they’ve been able to do 7-on-7 work with some teammates while adhering to local public health guidelines.

“Everybody was able to get some good quality work. It felt like a good OTA practice.”

For context, this was their way of trying to make up for the loss on-field work this spring due to a pandemic-prompted virtual offseason program.
