Rams close to hiring Kevin O’Connell as OC, people with knowledge of the situation said. McVay still playcaller. O’Connell’s role would be similar to Matt LaFleur’s in 2017.

    Rich Hammond@Rich_Hammond
I’m also told that the plan is for Sean McVay to continue to call plays, which is just fine. He now has O’Connell to assist in all facets, both in game prep and during games.

O’Connell succeeded McVay as OC in Washington, now will work with him in LA.

    Adam Caplan@caplannfl
He did an excellent job considering the circumstances. Real strong offensive staff with Rams.

    from https://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2020/01/10/report-rams-finalizing-deal-for-kevin-oconnell-as-offensive-coordinator/

O’Connell joined Washington as quarterbacks coach in 2017 and added passing game coordinator to his title before becoming offensive coordinator in 2019.

He began his NFL coaching career as quarterbacks coach in Cleveland in 2015 and went to the 49ers as an offensive assistant a year later.

O’Connell was expected to join Ron Rivera’s staff, remaining in Washington, and then was listed as a candidate for the Eagles’ offensive coordinator job. He also might have joined Josh McDaniels if McDaniels gets the Browns’ job.

But none of that happened, and Los Angeles is O’Connell’s next move.

The Rapid Rise Of Kevin O’Connell

    https://www.redskins.com/news/rapid-rise–kevin-oconnell-redskins-offensive-coordinator

Just two years ago, the Redskins lost their young offensive coordinator in Sean McVay to the Los Angeles Rams. He’s gone on to excel as a head coach, taking the team to a Super Bowl in his second season.
Now, the Redskins have another young assistant looking to leave his mark and show similar promise. In February, they promoted quarterbacks coach Kevin O’Connell to offensive coordinator, shifting Matt Cavanaugh into a senior offensive assistant role.
The 34-year-old O’Connell has continued to climb through the coaching ranks since he joined Washington, moving from quarterbacks coach to passing game coordinator last year. Now he’ll have a chance to run the entire offense with a plethora of dynamic weapons.
“Being a coordinator in my opinion, it’s about putting the people, your personnel, in situations where they can be successful,” he said. “Ninety percent of that in my opinion is the quarterback, and if the quarterback has success, the other ten guys around him if they’re doing their job will feel that success as well.”

Due to the variety of season-ending injuries last year, O’Connell received a very unique assignment in 2018. After losing starter Alex Smith and reliable backup man Colt McCoy for the season, the Redskins turned to O’Connell’s former Jets teammate Mark Sanchez and then journeyman Josh Johnson in an emergency late-season situation.
Sanchez weathered the storm but in his second game was replaced by Johnson, who led the Redskins to a crucial 16-13 win in Week 16 against Jacksonville that kept the team’s playoff hopes alive. O’Connell showed he was able to adjust his system and provide a game plan to any quarterback that was under center come Sunday.
“One of the things that I enjoyed about Alex [Smith], and really Colt [McCoy], was when we came out of Richmond with those two in the room, you really felt like Colt knew how we would play the game without Alex, and could step into that role and play that role,” O’Connell said. “Every coaching point Alex got, Colt got. We felt like we could maintain that, but you lose Colt and you’ve got two guys coming in that have not been a part of the organization.”

O’Connell is another former qb who has worked with great offensive coaches with different philosophies. He sounds like a guy with a serious grasp of play calling and the trade offs it involves. Some of us have, on occasion, been critical of McVay’s play calls. It could be a huge plus for McVay to have another creative offensive mind to work on the game plan and advise on the calls during the game. Great sign also that McVay is willing to reach out to add to his offensive brain trust.

O’Connell with the New England Patriots in 2008
Just prior to being drafted, San Diego sports writer Nick Canepa described O’Connell as having a great background and leadership qualities. At the 2008 NFL Combine, O’Connell ran the 40-yard dash in 4.61 seconds; only University of San Diego quarterback Josh Johnson had a faster time.

    New England Patriots
The New England Patriots selected O’Connell with their third pick (94th overall) of the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft. O’Connell rushed for a touchdown in the 2008 preseason against the New York Giants in the fourth quarter, in a game the Patriots eventually lost 19-14. He made his NFL debut on September 21, 2008 in the fourth quarter against the Miami Dolphins, throwing his first four career passes and completing three.

O’Connell was waived by the Patriots on August 30, 2009, two days after a preseason game in which starting quarterback Tom Brady was injured, and, in the second half, O’Connell threw two interceptions and only threw 3 completions on 10 attempts. The Patriots gave no explanation for releasing O’Connell, who was in competition with veteran quarterback Andrew Walter, signed after his release from the Oakland Raiders, and undrafted free agent rookie Brian Hoyer of Michigan State.

    Detroit Lions
O’Connell was claimed off waivers by the Detroit Lions on September 1, 2009.

    New York Jets
The Lions traded O’Connell to the New York Jets, for a 7th round 2011 draft pick, on September 6, 2009.

He was named a team captain for the September 20 game against the New England Patriots.

On August 31, 2010, New York would release O’Connell.[8] Following his departure, O’Connell found that he had a torn labrum in his throwing arm, an injury he sustained during the preseason. The injury required surgery.

Following his release, the New York Jets re-signed O’Connell to a two-year deal. He had been placed on the injured reserve list.[10] He was later released again on July 29, 2011.

    Miami Dolphins
On August 5, 2011, O’Connell signed with the Miami Dolphins, but was waived on September 3.

    Second stint with the Jets
O’Connell was claimed off waivers by the Jets on September 4, 2011.

    San Diego Chargers
O’Connell was signed by the San Diego Chargers on July 29, 2012 to serve as an emergency back-up in the Chargers’ practices with Charlie Whitehurst suffering an injury and Kyle Boller announcing his retirement from the league.[13] He was released on August 12, 2012.

    Coaching career

    Cleveland Browns
On February 17, 2015, it was announced that O’Connell was named to the position of quarterbacks coach of the Cleveland Browns for the 2015 NFL season.

    San Francisco 49ers
O’Connell was hired to the offensive staff of the San Francisco 49ers on February 26, 2016.

    Washington Redskins
On January 20, 2017, O’Connell was announced as the new quarterbacks coach of the Washington Redskins. This announcement was made following the promotion of Matt Cavanaugh to offensive coordinator.O’Connell himself was promoted to offensive coordinator for the 2019 season, with Cavanaugh moving to a senior assistant role.

    Coaching tree

NFL head coaches under whom Kevin O’Connell has served:

Mike Pettine, Cleveland Browns (2015) (+ offensive coordinator John DeFilippo, West Coast offense)
Chip Kelly, San Francisco 49ers (2016)
    Jay Gruden, Washington Redskins (2017–2019)
Bill Callahan, Washington Redskins (2019) Interim head coach

Kevin O’Connell got hired by Jay Gruden in Washington, then Gruden promoted him twice (QBs to pass-game coordinator to OC). It’s not exactly a stretch to think Sean McVay talked to his pal Jay about O’Connell.

    PA Ram

He worked as QB coach for Mike Pettine (HC)/ John DiFilippo (OC) in Cleveland (2015). He was in charge of “special projects” for Chip Kelly in SF (2016). And QB coach (2017) for Jay Gruden / Matt Cavanaugh, then passing game coordinator in 2018 and then Cavanaugh got bumped upstairs to “senior offensive assistant” so he could be OC in 2019. So he’s coached under 3 “highly regarded” offensive guys, DiFilippo, Kelly and Gruden.

I read he was Josh McDaniels’ preferred OC and was expected to get the job if JM got the Panthers or Browns HC gig, according to Albert Breer (Boston Sports Tonight).

and well a 4.61 40. that’s the first thing i look for when deciding on an offensive coordinator…

haha. seriously though. i have no idea who this guy is. but i’ll trust the rams on this hire. and i am glad that they decided to get an offensive coordinator. this will hopefully be good for mcvay.

Josh McDaniels’ preferred offensive coordinator, Kevin O’Connell, takes a different job

    https://www.yahoo.com/sports/josh-mcdaniels-preferred-offensive-coordinator-031421938.html

On Friday night, the Los Angeles Rams made the move to hire Kevin O’Connell as their next offensive coordinator. O’Connell spent the 2019 season as the Washington Redskins offensive coordinator and will now work under Sean McVay.

O’Connell, 38, was a former New England Patriots third-round draft pick in 2008 but spent just one season as a backup quarterback with the team before bouncing around the NFL.

And while O’Connell was only with the Patriot short-term, his hire on Friday actually may actually be of some significance for the team.

As the MMQB’s Albert Breer detailed on NBC Sports Boston’s “Boston Sports Tonight”, O’Connell was going to be McDaniels’ offensive coordinator if he got the Browns or Panthers job. So could O’Connell taking another job signal that McDaniels isn’t the favorite in Cleveland?

And so my guess, and I don’t know this, but my guess is that if Kevin O’Connell had an offer on the table from the Rams — and let’s remember, that’s also going to be a non-play-calling job — if he had an offer on the table from the Rams, chance are he checked in with Josh first.

And at the very least, it seems likely that Josh didn’t walk away from the meeting today with the job. Now what I can say, there were good feelings coming out of the meeting. I also think Kevin Stefanski, the Vikings offensive coordinator, is still in this. I would also say that the 49ers defensive coordinator, Robert Saleh, is a dark horse here.

Essentially, it’s impossible to know if O’Connell’s hire means anything about McDaniels at the moment. As Breer said, he probably checked in with McDaniels before taking the job. And McDaniels did meet with the Browns for seven hours on Friday and him joining the Browns may be one of the two “likely results” for this hiring situation.

But if McDaniels doesn’t know definitively whether he has the job or not, O’Connell would probably have trouble turning down a coordinator spot with the Rams.

The McDaniels situation will likely have a resolution at some point in the coming days. The only way it could extend further is if the Browns favor either Stefanski or Saleh and the team of their favored coach advances in the playoffs.

But if that happens, the answer on the Browns coaching search will likely become clearer. And the longer there is no news about the hire, the better it will be for the Patriots’ chances of keeping McDaniels.
