Rams knew early on that Ndamukong wasn’t the same old Suh

The stunning move by the Rams to trade for defensive end Dante Fowler Jr. was believed to be the icing on the cake for a championship-caliber defense. But Fowler was more of a necessity than a luxury.

Per a league source, the Rams made the trade for Fowler because they quickly realized that defensive tackle Ndamukong Suh isn’t the same guy that he was three years ago.

Recent performances confirm that. With the Bears and Eagles deciding to take away defensive tackle Aaron Donald, Suh hasn’t been able to take advantage of the more favorable matchups that flow from an obsession to stop one guy.

Of course, Fowler hasn’t taken advantage, either. As one source pointed out to PFT, the Rams’ first choice was Bills defensive end Jerry Hughes, but Buffalo and L.A. couldn’t work out a deal before the deadline.

Maybe Hughes will become the Rams’ next target in 2019, when Suh and/or Fowler leave as free agents

I wish they would have known, before they signed him, and that way, we could have signed someone else.

Brockers has been a huge disappointment too.

One thing McVay has failed to maintain was the dominant d-line the Rams had under Fisher. That’s mostly due to going from a 4 man front to Phillips’ hybrid 3-4 and getting rid of solid d-linemen that weren’t thought to be a good fit like Sims and Hayes. Quinn started playing really well as an OLB around the middle of last season. They miss him too.

So what was once the best d-line in the NFL is now just an average unit.

And the dramatic personnel moves the Rams made last offseason to improve the defense have pretty much blown up in their faces. I don’t fault them for that though. I like the aggressiveness they showed in trying to improve the team. In any other universe the moves they made would have propelled them to a Super Bowl.

Of course, they still could end up in the the Super Bowl. It just doesn’t feel as likely right now.

    Wake up little Suh Sigh.
    You’ve been sound asleep.
Wake up little Suh Sigh and weep.
The game’s over, it’s another loss

Weirdly, this is exactly what I was saying to someone today.

    Suh.

The way the Eagles totally focused on Donald should have opened everything up for Suh and Brockers to wreck everything.

    And they didn’t.

    So…

Strange year. At the beginning of preseason, i was ecstatic to have Suh and Donald on the front four. I thought it would be epic. Deacon and Merlin fearsome-foursome level epic.

But the defense has been anything but fearsome.

..and yet, here they sit at 11-3. Strange.
