Report: Rams expected to franchise tag Sammy Watkins

Sammy Watkins said this week he’d be happy to stay in Los Angeles.

Which is convenient, since it seems they can make him.

According to Alden Gonzalez of ESPN.com, the Rams are expected to use the franchise tag on the wide receiver, which isn’t a surprise after they traded a second-round pick and another player for him in August.

Watkins caught 39 passes, but had eight touchdowns, so there’s both production to point to and room to grow. He’s also still just 24, so using the tag as the table-settle for a long-term deal seems reasonable. Last year’s tag for wide receivers was $15.682 million.

That is more than I would pay. Bur the Rams seem willing to things like that, witness T Johnson last year.

Well, they get him on a one-year deal. See if he can produce more with a full camp. If not, he’s gone. If so…yay. He has tremendous upside, so if they can afford him, fine. I just don’t think it’s worth losing someone else.

it’s good to keep Watkins (as long as it doesn’t impact signing A.D.) …. Watkins was an unsung threat in allowing Woods, Everret, Kupp and Gurley (on screens) to get open and productive.

defenses can’t cover all these guys.

I want Watkins back. He’s got more talent than any other receiver on the team, and I think he’ll get more productive after OTAs and a complete training camp with Goff.

If they think they can win a Ring next year, then i like it. But I’m with Ag, that is a very high price to pay.

They must not totally trust his health, otherwise I’d think they would just sign a long term deal.
