NFL Draft Profile: AJ Arcuri, Offensive Lineman, Michigan State Spartans
NFL draft profile scouting report for Michigan State offensive lineman AJ Arcuri

    https://www.si.com/nfl/draft/scouting-reports/ajarcuri

    Pos: OT
    Ht: 6070
    Wt: 307
    Hand: 1100
    Arm: 3428
    Wing: 8348
    DOB: 8/13/97

    One-Liner:

A powerful lineman with very heavy hands. Once he has a hold of you, you aren’t getting away. Does not have the most flexible hips though and will be primarily a right tackle.

    Pros:

Fantastic run blocker who can easily move to the second level and is great at opening holes at the line of scrimmage. Very heavy hands, once he gets a hold of a defender, he rarely gets overtaken. A very smart player who understands what his job is on every play and uses the proper technique. Has a very good pull step and can move across the line with ease. Has a quick pass set and kick slide, which is great at stifling a speed rusher. Great initial punch that can stop a rusher in his tracks.

    Cons:

Does not have very flexible hips, so has a difficult time readjusting during plays. If a player takes him off his path, especially moving to the second level, he has a really hard time getting to his assignment. Can get bull rushed fairly easy and gets on his heels when the defensive lineman wins initial contact. Doesn’t have a good reload, once a player breaks his grip he has a real problem finding his grip again and for some reason even loses his base. Great first punch, but doesn’t reload enough and it can get him in trouble. Relies on his hand strength too much in pass protection, so if the initial punch doesn’t stop the pass rusher, he often ends up losing the battle. Doesn’t have much versatility in his game will likely be only a right tackle.

AJ Arcuri: OT who played both LT and RT at Michigan State. 6’7 308 lbs. 34 in. arms and 11 in. hands. Very experienced as a 3 year starter. He’s very solid in pass pro and can really move people in the run game. Very technically sound

Uses his length well to keep defenders at bay. Large hands snatch defenders and don’t let go. As a run blocker he plays with good balance and leverage and drives people back. He can get to second level blocks and occasionally pull as well

He also does a good job getting his head across defenders and walking them off to create running lanes. In pass pro he has a wide base and good feet. Keeps his hands and feet synced up to keep balance and positioning. Times his punches well

He generally has good hand placement but there are occasional lapses. He already has an NFL anchor and even when initially beat he can reset his anchor. When he is threatened by speed on the edge he can become susceptible to inside counters.

He handled Michigan’s Aidan Hutchinson and David Ojabo. Only allowed one pressure. Opened holes for backs. They tried beating him around the arc but he was able to run them around the arc and keep them from flattening. His length is an asset and he’s explosive out of his stance

He didn’t grade well in speed drills 40, 20 split, 10 split) but who f***ing cares about that! He doesn’t have elite agility but he has enough. I think he was a STEAL. I could see him providing depth and becoming an eventual starter. As a run blocker I’d like to see him finish

There’s a reason we have seen rookie AJ Arcuri move around a lot more in practices as camp continued. Sean McVay says Arcuri is in real consideration for that 8/9 spot on the offensive line and praised his growth. The players viable for that spot have to do multiple things.
