Defensive Coordinator Raheem Morris Brings New Energy to Rams OTAs
L.A.’s new defensive coordinator offers hands-on approach

THOUSAND OAKS, Calif. — Something didn’t look right to Raheem Morris.

While helping to direct a footwork drills with linebackers coach Mike Shula, the Los Angeles Rams new defensive coordinator stopped Kenny Young, asking him to do the drill over.

“You got to keep one foot on the ground at all times!” Morris bellowed, demonstrating to Young what he wanted.

Young went through the drill again, apparently this time doing it the right way and getting a “Good job!” from Morris.

“He was telling me I’m not at UCLA anymore and to stop hopping in my shuffle,” Young said with a smile after practice. “He was just getting me right, telling me to keep my feet in the grass.”

While the Rams returned most of the players from the team’s No. 1-ranked defense, the lost an important piece when defensive coordinator Brandon Staley took the head coaching job with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Morris has big shoes to fill but brings a big personality to the practice field.

“They’re both energy guys, but Coach Morris likes to talk a tad bit more junk to you,” Rams edge rusher Leonard Floyd said, when asked to compare Staley and Morris. “And that gets you going a lot.”

rams lost john johnson. but they have burgess back. i like burgess. they lost brockers. but they have a full season of robinson. and they drafted brown iii.

morris though only has one season of experience as a defensive coordinator. then again staley had no experience as a defensive coordinator when he was hired.

    i’m excited.

from PFF, Defensive scheme analysis for all 32 NFL teams: https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-defensive-scheme-analysis-32-nfl-teams-2021#LAR

    LOS ANGELES RAMS

2020 Defensive Pass Efficiency Rank: 1
2020 Defensive Rush Efficiency Rank: 2
    2020 Base Coverage: Quarters
2020 Third-Down Mentality: Blitz and play Cover 3

Going from former defensive coordinator Brandon Staley to new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris is quite the scheme shock. It will be interesting to see if Morris keeps some of the new concepts Staley used. The “tite” front is not something we’ve seen from Morris in his stops around the NFL. Last year, Morris’ Falcons defense ran an “odd” or “bear” front, 3-4 looks, only 17% of the time.

Where Morris deploys cornerback Jalen Ramsey will be interesting, as well. Staley moved the veteran around a bit in 2020, playing him at nickel when the situation called for it. Ramsey’s rate of snaps at outside cornerback dropped by six percentage points from 2019 to 2020. During Morris’ time with Atlanta, his defense was a static Cover 3 and Cover 1 unit, like what Ramsey played in Jacksonville when 84% of his snaps came on the outside in 2018. Ramsey played 145 snaps as a nickel or slot corner in 2018 and 2019 combined but 173 in 2020 alone.
