I had a chance to look at the clips of all of the plays that Mannion was in against the Bengals in 2015. It was in response to a poster who was criticizing the play calling on the last drive of the game when Mannion came in so I focused on the routes that our receivers ran and the D they were up against. But it will probably tell you a little bit about Mannion anyways:

Nickle D. All routes were indeed within 10 yards.

Nickle D again. The two outside receivers both went vertical routes but presumably had safeties help over top (can’t see the safeties in the clip). Mannion took the 5 yard curl gain.

Dime D. Welker was on a 15 yard corner route and Cook on seam/fly route. Mannion took the 5 yard in. He may have had a chance to get it to Welker on the corner route but it’s gotta be one hell of a throw and I can’t see where the single high safety is on the play.

Dime D again. Bengals actually sent a heavy blitz with 7 rushers. Blitz mostly picked up but the late coming in blitzing safety would have probably gotten to Mannion if he didn’t get rid of the ball when he did. One receiver went for a vertical route whereas the rest all broke off within 10 or so yards. Can’t tell if that’s the original play design or hot reads by the receivers reacting to the blitz

Dime D again. Two receivers were on vertical routes whereas the other two did 5 yard in and 10 yard in. Mannion took the 5 yard in route again.

The first thing that jumped out at me (was not one snap was taken under center – in all these clips – the Rams have Sean in the shot-gun formation), and his delivery seemed very long, and slow to develop. There was no zip on the ball.
    ..
I remember last year, the Quarterback coaches worked with Nick Foles, on the 3 second drill (that was one of the main concerns about Nick coming from the Eagles). His delivery took to long. Foles seemed to have a very good delivery in game #1 against the Seahawks – so I thought the training was working. I don’t remember if Sean Mannion got the same training.
    ..
Okay – maybe Mannion came in cold for this game against the Bengals – but still – I did not see the “snap” he had in preseason. That’s just from these clips – so don’t jump to any conclusions.
Also, I remember, looking at film of Mannion while he played at Oregon State, and he seemed to have more “zip” on the ball.
    ..
Sean’s footwork (in these clips) seemed a little sloppy — but that can be corrected — I know Sean is working on that now, this off-season. — With the three second drill, he should be able to get his “muscle memory” to take over, he’ll plant his front leg better – and his delivery should speed up.
    ..
I was looking at tape of Carson Wentz and Jared Goff (trying to compare the three), and I think I would be more comfortable with Mannion starting an NFL game “right now”.

Except for the last gif, when his arm is hit, I didn’t see the negatives the poster cites. Is he supposed to throw fast balls on all those short routes?
