Report: John Lynch will be 49ers’ G.M.
The 49ers are hiring former NFL safety John Lynch as their new General Manager, Jay Glazer of FOX Sports reported Sunday night.
Lynch, 45, has been working as a game analyst for FOX and has no front-office experience. He retired before the 2008 season following a 15-year career and could eventually be voted to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
The 49ers are expected to hire Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan as their new head coach after next week’s Super Bowl. The team had a second interview with Shanahan this weekend and also interviewed G.M. candidates, but Lynch’s name never surfaced as a candidate until it was reported that he will be hired.
Glazer tweeted that the 49ers wanted to emulate what the Broncos have done with former player John Elway as the face and leader of the franchise and “wanted to change the whole attitude of the organization.”
After a long run in Tampa Bay, Lynch played his final four seasons with the Broncos. He retired after being released by the Patriots just before the 2008 season and began his broadcasting career during that season.

nittany ramModeratorGood. The Niners hire a GM with no talent evaluation or scouting experience at all.

znModerator49ers hire John Lynch to be next general manager in shocking move
The hard-hitting former NFL safety is among the finalists for this year’s Hall of Fame classhttp://www.cbssports.com/nfl/news/49ers-hire-john-lynch-to-be-next-general-manager-in-shocking-move/
The 49ers found their next general manager on Sunday. They’re turning to a future Hall of Famer to fix their sinking franchise.
As first reported by Fox’s Jay Glazer, the 49ers are hiring John Lynch as general manager. CBS Sports NFL Insider Jason La Canfora confirmed the move, adding that Lynch will be working under Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, who is expected to be named the new coach of the 49ers after Super Bowl LI.Jason La Canfora ✔ @JasonLaCanfora
The biggest reality for 49ers is this will be Kyle Shanahan’s franchise, now. New sheriff coming to town. He’ll be in chargeAccording to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the 49ers handed Lynch a six-year contract, which as Schefter noted is “almost unprecedented.” Schefter also offered this incredible detail:
The idea to hire Lynch was his own. He personally called Atlanta Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan about a week ago, and volunteered for the job.
Lynch, who attended Stanford, played safety for the Buccaneers from 1993-03 — winning a Super Bowl with the team — and the Broncos from 2004-07. An interesting twist here is that he was actually coached by Mike Shanahan (Kyle’s dad) in Denver.
In his 15-year NFL career, Lynch snagged 26 interceptions and recorded 1,051 tackles. As one of 15 finalists, he’s eligible to be voted into the Hall of Fame this week.
Since retiring, he’s served as an NFL analyst for Fox. So, as La Canfora pointed out, Lynch brings zero front office experience to San Francisco.Jason La Canfora ✔ @JasonLaCanfora
Lynch was a stellar player and is a student of the game and super sharp… but zero experience leading an NFL football ops departmentLynch’s first front office job will be to fix a franchise that’s gone 7-25 in the past two seasons and fired coaches in consecutive offseasons. The 49ers roster is almost entirely devoid of talent — including at quarterback. The 49ers do, however, own the second overall pick in this year’s draft. So, they’ll have a chance to find a potential star this offseason.
The 49ers’ next expected move is hiring Shanahan, who helped the Falcons reach this season’s Super Bowl by coaching the offense to 33.8 points per game.January 29, 2017 at 11:36 pm #64532
znModerator49ers hire John Lynch as next GM
http://www.sfgate.com/49ers/article/49ers-hire-John-Lynch-as-next-GM-10892879.php
The 49ers have hired FOX analyst and former Pro Bowl safety John Lynch, 45, to be their new general manager, a league source confirmed.
The news comes as a major surprise: Lynch has no personnel experience and was not connected to the 49ers’ opening before he was hired.
The 49ers are known to have conducted interviews with nine other candidates. They met with Lynch on Thursday and Friday before they agreed to a six-year contract, ESPN reported. They also met with Vikings assistant general manager George Paton and Cardinals vice president of player personnel Terry McDonough on Saturday in Atlanta. Paton and McDonough were believed to be their final two candidates for the opening.Lynch, a Stanford graduate who played for Bill Walsh in 1992, is a Pro Football Hall of Fame finalist who was a nine-time Pro Bowl safety during a 15-year career that ended in 2007. He spent his final four seasons with the Broncos playing for Mike Shanahan, the father of the 49ers’ presumptive head coach, Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan.
Lynch wasn’t on the 49ers’ radar until he called Kyle Shanahan about a week ago and volunteered for the job, ESPN reported. Lynch had met with Shanahan before he called the Falcons’ divisional-playoff win over the Seahawks on Jan. 14 in his role as a FOX analyst. During the broadcast, Lynch said Shanahan could come across as arrogant during interviews, but he admired that type of confidence.
Given his lack of front-office experience, the hiring of Lynch lends more credence to the belief Kyle Shanahan could have control of the 53-man roster. Shanahan, 37, is in line to be the NFL’s second-youngest head coach after spending the past nine seasons as an offensive coordinator.
The 49ers were also considering former Buccaneers general manager Mark Dominik for their opening, but hadn’t scheduled an interview with him, a source said. Dominik, 45, an ESPN analyst, has a history with Lynch. He was Tampa Bay’s director of pro scouting during seven of Lynch’s 10 seasons with the Buccaneers. It’s not known if the 49ers could still consider him for a front-office role. Dominik’s five-year tenure as Tampa Bay’s GM ended when he was fired in 2013.The hiring of a general manager with no NFL front-office experience is rare.
Broncos general manager John Elway had that distinction when he was hired by in 2011, although he was a co-owner of an Arena Football League team from 2002 to 2008. Former Lions general manager Matt Millen, a linebacker who played for both the 49ers and Raiders, worked as a TV analyst before he worked in Detroit’s front office from 2001 to 2008.
After firing general manager Trent Baalke on Jan. 1, the 49ers had Patriots director of player personnel Nick Caserio and Chiefs director of player personnel Chris Ballard high on their wish list, but both declined interviews. Ballard subsequently interviewed with the Colts and was hired as their GM on Sunday.
Packers executive Brian Gutekunst, who was widely reported to be the frontrunner for the position, withdrew from consideration Jan. 20. Green Bay executive Eliot Wolfe also withdrew from consideration.January 29, 2017 at 11:39 pm #64533
znModeratorMatt Millen redux.
I happen to think Matt Millen did a fantastic job. I think the casual fan doesn;t realize that. You have to really know the game to see it. I mean, until he took over in Atlanta, what were they? Nothing. Now they’ve already won one superbowl and are going for their 2nd superbowl win in a row.
Or…am I thinking of Tim Tebow… (?)
