#Falcons rookie Jake Matthews is dead last in @PFF’s OT ratings. 71st of 71. Fellow Aggie Luke Joeckel struggling too. Joeckel 59th of 71.

Well the good news is that things were better forJake Matthews in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears than in Week 5 against the New York Giants. The bad news: the bar was set extremely low. Matthews followed up a dismal -9.9 overall PFF grade against the Giants with a disappointing, but less disastrous, -3.5 against the Bears.

Matthews is struggling both as a pass blocker and as a run blocker. He is currently ranked 57th out of 58 eligible tackles in Pass Blocking Efficiency; allowing 18 total pressures on 175 pass blocking snaps. Matthews’ -15.3 cumulativeoverall PFF grade and -7.8 Run Blocking grade both rank 70thout of 72 eligible tackles.

Because of the late switch to left tackle in the preseason and a nagging ankle injury, the only solution seems to be to wait it out and hope things improve. Not helping matters any, Matthews will face the Baltimore Ravens pass rushing trio of Terrell Suggs (8.5 Pass Rushing Productivity), Elvis Dumervil (10.4) and Pernell McPhee(13.2) this week. All three rank among the top 17 in 3-4 OLBs in Pass Rushing Productivity.

The peformance lately of Falcons rookie left tackle Jake Matthews suggests he’s having issues with the left ankle he injured during the season opener.

Bears defensive end Jared Allen was able to pressure quarterback Matt Ryan on Sunday by pushing Mathews backwards with bull rushes. Matthews appeared to have trouble anchoring because of the balky ankle. Matthews allowed two sacks and five other pressures and also was penalized twice for holding.

The previous week Matthews had so many issues in pass blocking against Giants defensive end Jason Pierre-Paul that offensive coordinator Dirk Koetter eventually provided help with running backs.

Allen and Pierre-Paul are both effective pass rushers but it’s clear Matthews, the No. 6 overall pick in the draft, is struggling physically. Matthews sat out the Week 2 game at Cincinnati because of the ankle injury before returning to the lineup.

Coach Mike Smith has praised Matthews’ toughness as he plays through the injury, and Koetter said Matthews also is going through some typical growing pans.

“We’ve got to remember, Jake is six games into his rookie season,” Koetter said. “We’ve already switched him from the right to the left. Jake is a tough guy and he’s a very prideful guy. If Jake is bothered by that ankle, he would never say it. He doesn’t say anything about that. You never hear Jake complaining about anything.”

PFF ranks Jake Long 38th out of 71 tackles. He;s also the 24th LOT.

Barksdale ranks 7th out of 71. He’s also the 2nd ranked ROT.

    PFF also said this:

    Game Ball

Aaron Donald walks away with this week’s Game Ball after making light work of the Rams’ interior offensive line. Definitely a player who looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

Well I dunno. I know Wells has played better recently, but I don’t think he offers Donald much of a challenge. So we need to see Donald against better competition.
