When I talk about #2 qbs, I mean #2 caliber qbs…either career backups or failed starters who had become back-ups by the time the Rams signed them. So I am not talking about starting-caliber qbs who just happened to be #2 on the depth chart. So no Warner, Green (from 2000) or Bulger. I see those as starters…who weren’t always in a position to start.

Compared to the others, my impressions tell me Keenum has more as a qb than them, largely because he wills it through work, but also because he has some instincts on the field and is a bit of a gamer. Keenum is somewhat physically limited (though he doesn’t have a rag arm, I think it’s a just average arm). From what I have seen, he’s actually strong in the intangibles dept. and if he weren’t, he probably wouldn’t be on a roster. He’s field smart and also a dedicated film junkie and self-maximizer. He raises himself above his limitations–to an extent. Or does it just enough. That’s what I mean about him being a self-maximizer.

But it’s not just my impressions…the numbers back it up too.

The numbers are for the year the player started a few games for the Rams. So for Frerotte it’s 2007, for Boller 2009, etc. I don’t do Green II from 2008….IMO he should never have been given a start that year, he wasn’t up to it.

    Keenum: 6-2 209 lbs.
    (2015): 3.2% TD percentage, 0.8% Int percentage, 6.9 YPA, 87.7 qb rating

Jamie Martin: 6-2 205 lbs. Martin was smart and methodical. But then he was working with the GSOT roster. Keenum is smart and methodical AND has some instincts for improvisation. I think Keenum has more arm than Martin did, too.
    (2005): 2.8% TD percentage, 4.0% Int percentage, 6,1 YPA, 83.5 qb rating

Frerotte: He was past his best days but to be fair the 2007 OL was a chopped up mess.
4.2% TD percentage, 7.2% Int percentage, 7.2 YPA, 58.3 qb rating

Boller: 6-3 220 lbs. and could run. He;s the anti-Keenum. Had the body but not the heart or mind.
1.7% TD percentage, 3.4% Int percentage, 5.1 YPA, 61.2 qb rating

A.J. Feeley: 6-3 225 lbs. But I don;t think AJ had as much arm as even Keenum does. Feeley really leaves no impression.
1.0% TD percentage, 2.1% Int percentage, 6.0 YPA, 66.6 qb rating

Clemens: 6-2 224 lbs So physically bigger but I don’t think Kellen added much beyond acceptably competent play.
3.3% TD percentage, 2.9% Int percentage, 6.5 YPA, 78.8 qb rating

Davis: 6-2 221 lbs. Far too mistake prone for me. Very erratic in clutch situations.
4.2% TD percentage, 3.2% Int percentage, 6.9 YPA, 85.1 qb rating

Hill: 6-5 210 lbs. I expected a bit more out of Hill than what we got. I thought he crumbled in clutch situations. I defended him early until the “crumble” set in.
3.5% TD percentage, 3.1% Int percentage, 7.2 YPA, 83.9 qb rating

I would rather have Keenum than those other QBs you listed.

Keenum was asked to manage the game and not turn the ball over, just like every other Rams #2 I listed. Unlike all of the others, though, he did it a certain percentage better. For one thing he actually DIDN’T turn the ball over, and they could win games when he was at qb. The combined Rams record with all the other back-up qbs I listed — excluding Martin — is 12-23. The Rams do not have a winning percentage with any of those guys, though to be fair they were often playing in brutal circumstances (like Frerotte playing in the midst of the Great Unholy Rams OL Massacre of 2007.)

With Martin it was 4-1, but then that was with the GSOT offense. With Keenum it was 3-2 without the GSOT offense.
