Deadwood Movie HBO
https://www.hbo.com/content/hboweb/en/movies/deadwood/synopsis.html
Continuing the story begun in David Milch’s critically acclaimed, Emmy-winning HBO series, the feature-length presentation is written by Milch, directed by Daniel Minahan and features original cast members from the series.
In the Deadwood film, the indelible characters of the series are reunited after ten years to celebrate South Dakota’s statehood. Former rivalries are reignited, alliances are tested and old wounds are reopened, as all are left to navigate the inevitable changes that modernity and time have wrought.
Returning cast members for the Deadwood movie include: Ian McShane (Al Swearengen), Timothy Olyphant (Seth Bullock), Molly Parker (Alma Ellsworth), Paula Malcomson (Trixie), John Hawkes (Sol Star), Anna Gunn (Martha Bullock), Dayton Callie (Charlie Utter), Brad Dourif (Doc Cochran), Robin Weigert (“Calamity” Jane Canary), William Sanderson (E.B. Farnum), Kim Dickens (Joanie Stubbs) and Gerald McRaney (George Hearst). The film will also feature new cast member Jade Pettyjohn (Caroline).
During its three-season, 36-episode run on from 2004 to 2006, the Deadwood series was nominated for 28 Primetime Emmy Awards, winning eight, including Outstanding Directing for a Drama Series (Walter Hill), and also received a Golden Globe Award for Best Performer by an Actor in a Television Series: Drama (Ian McShane).
The Deadwood film is executive produced by David Milch, Carolyn Strauss, Daniel Minahan, Gregg Fienberg, Scott Stephens, Ian McShane and Timothy Olyphant; directed by Daniel Minahan; written by David Milch

It’s tonight.
For those who never knew Deadwood, it is One of the Best Things.
In its own different way, right up there with Game of Thrones Seasons 1-6 and The Wire.

June 1, 2019 at 12:51 am #101827znModeratorIt was good.
June 5, 2019 at 5:39 pm #101917znModeratorJust watched the movie again cause I “taped” it. It was really really good. But you can’t watch the movie without knowing the series. The character arcs are too complicated.
But then if you’ve never seen the series, you need to.
Deadwood genuinely was one of the best things ever. One of the best written, one of the best acted. Both. AND thematically it is not standard fare, not by anything remotely like a longshot.

I’d watch prettymuch anything with Ian McShane. He’s a mix of Al Pacino and Sean Connery. Or somethin. I dunno.
My favorite character on that show might just be the Doc, btw.

vDid you see the movie?
Doc is a great character. You know the actor is also in Lord of the Rings. Do you remember the scene where Doc breaks down because he remembers hearing the cries of the wounded and dying from civil war battlefields?

I’m prettysure the actor is from WV. I think i heard that somewhere.
Havent seen the film yet. But i hear they rushed it. And they totally left out the Dragons,

is what i hear.Ah but they did include the cave trolls, so it balances. Brad Dourif who plays Doc is from WV. Here he is in Lord of the Rings, playing Grima.
June 7, 2019 at 9:45 am #101965ZooeyModeratorI don’t have cable, let alone premium channels, so I’ve missed some good TV. The Wire. Sopranos. Deadwood. GOT. Oh, well.

DVDs.
I actually rarely watch shows on a regularly scheduled basis. Usually I wait till they’re done and get DVDs of a whole season. Sometimes I tivo them and let em build up then watch bunches at a time.
So the real thing is, a Netflix account. If you don’t have Netflix it works quite well. If you got DVDs and lined up The Wire (first 4 seasons), Deadwood (all 3 seasons), and GOT (first 6 seasons)…and some folks might recommend others…what a great time that would be.
There was a time there when american TV serials like Deadwood made TV THE great american medium, exceeding film. That’s in terms of writing, acting, stories, and issues raised. The great american TV serials are bolder and more socially aware than the film industry is, and by a longshot.

July 5, 2019 at 2:08 pm #102708joemadParticipantCalamity Jane is my fucking hero….. I finally had time to see it…. Great movie.
I never was a big fan of westerns, but both the Deadwood series and movie were great.
Swearagin never stopped loving Trixie… But he took care of both Saul, Trixie and the baby… Al had a good heart for them….
I had forgotten how much of an asshole the senator he was…. Why did he speak like a robot? . He sucked…
The one HBO series that never got much attention was Rome. I recommend watching that series… Great series…. It was cancelled in 2006 because it was too expensive to produce…. Has all the brutal killings and incestual sex
that G.O.T. had only without those hideous dragons and fake queens….Check out Rome…. “To the republic!”

Yeah I liked “Rome.” I 2nd your recommendation. Lots to like about it. For example, how Augustus becomes creepier and more sociopathic as he grows up–it’s well handled. That’s just one detail among many.
A favorite quotation:

my understanding is milch spent more and more time on john from cincinnati.
which was also a very good show. even if just for one season.
but he really shoulda just concentrated on one.
July 6, 2019 at 11:49 am #102733Billy_TParticipantI saw the movie and liked it. Especially the Shakespearian diction thingy they do.
Have not seen the series, though. I cancelled HBO right after I watched the movie, with GOT ending, etc. etc. But may renew for another month when His Dark Materials is on. Might give it a shot then.
The Guardian had an article the other day, talking about the end of peak streaming and the beginnings of balkanization . . . with everyone and their mother getting into the Netflix biz. Pretty soon, we won’t have any aggregators, and will have to purchase subs for every network, and a few for the content providers themselves. That is, if we care enough to want to see these shows.
I’m okay with having one or two. But I won’t be signing up for more than that, even if it means I can’t watch this or that series. I think I’ll survive. More time to read and enjoy nice weather when it’s here.
July 7, 2019 at 12:35 pm #102751znModeratorHave not seen the series, though.
It’s just a netflix order away (I mean ordering the discs).
Streaming only matters if you have to/need to watch things when originally broadcast….which IMO is a hot consumerist model of seeing these things. I rarely watch anything that way these days. For me, instead, it’s binging with discs…though to do it that way you can’t care if you’re a year behind. So I say, wait a year and order the discs.

Caesar: It’s only hubris if I fail. After GOT recently ended, my wife and I re-watched Rome… we hadn’t watched it since it was cancelled in 2006. We had forgotten how great that series was…. i remember the hubris line…… a lot of great lines and characters……
The Roman Empire lasted centuries, it’s too bad that HBO couldn’t produce a few more seasons…..
a few of those actors in Rome (Brutus and Cesar) also had some acting parts in GOT too….
