Cosell’s Film Review: recent warning signs with Dak Prescott
Greg Cosell’s Film Review: Some recent warning signs with Cowboys QB Dak Prescott
Greg Cosell
me: lots of pics.
excerpt:
…none of this should be too surprising. It’s normal for rookie quarterbacks to struggle. We’ve seen it with Carson Wentz of the Philadelphia Eagles. But Wentz is asked to do more in the offense with a supporting cast that isn’t on the same level as Dallas’ cast, so his mistakes are magnified. The Cowboys seem to understand Prescott is still a rookie. Against the Giants in particular, Dallas’ passing game was highly schemed to define throws for Prescott, with significant use of bootleg action. That has been the case most of the season, which is smart with a rookie quarterback. Prescott hasn’t been asked to do much progression reading. They didn’t have much of a drop-back passing game against the Giants.

Scouts absolutely loved this type of play from Wentz in college. You can really see why. pic.twitter.com/BCTteEVGWM

December 19, 2016 at 1:14 pm #61329InvaderRamModeratordak prescott is still playing well. i don’t necessarily buy the argument that he’s being propped up by the offensive line and elliot. certainly it makes a difference but not THAT much of a difference.

Read the first post, this thread. It isn’t just that he’s propped up by those things. Dallas limits what they let Prescott do. They have enough of an offense around him so that they can scale what they ask of him way back.

no i understand. i still don’t agree.
he still has to make plays. i’ll put it this way. put carson wentz or jared goff in that offense, and i’m not entirely convinced they’d be better. even while scaling back their responsibilities. or maybe even as good.

Yeah that’s where we differ.
Put Wents and Goff in that offense, which is WAY scaled back, and with that OL and those skill players, and in my mind there’s just absolutely no way they would not be doing better than they are now.
In terms of making plays? Dallas is 29th in passing attempts, 1st in rushing attempts, and 2nd in rushing yards. They scaled the offense back for him and don’t ask him to do as much. Sure he’s making plays but then so are Wentz and Goff–under more challenging circumstances.
I mean just on paper, all other things being equal, which rookie qb ought to be doing better?
The one with the scaled back offense who throws less while the team successfully runs more?
Or the one without the scaled back offense who throws more and that’s with not much of a rushing attack?

well. yeah. they’d be doing better than they are now. they just wouldn’t be doing as well as prescott is now.
attempts don’t matter to me. still gotta make plays when you do get the chance.
but yeah. scaling back the offense. not requiring him to go through progressions. i have no doubt it helps. elliot. i have no doubt it takes pressure off him. i’m just saying i doubt wentz or goff would be much better if at all given the same situation.
and dak is going to get better as he gets more experience.
