August 1, 2022 at 11:44 pm #139905znModeratorElvisJust got home. I’ll have more to say and pics later but Wow, longest line i’ve ever seen to get in though not too crazy once inside, still the hype is real. People are turning out to camp like never before.
And that’s great, but also worse for people like me. It’s harder to move around (i sat in the bleachers the whole time). They’re looking harder at what you’re bringing in, no more professional lens, phoenixrising had to leave his in the car so no pics from him today.
I really hope it was load management because Stafford, after throwing drills (and looking great), rested the entire 11 on 11 reps. Wolford ran the 1’s and Perkins ran the 2’s. It was a big fall off in both cases.
A few observations: Kupp is really good, i mean it’s obvious but it’s also ridiculous. The only time the 1’s really looked good with Wolford was when he was throwing to Kupp. Pretty much everytime there was a good play and you said, “who was that?” It was Kupp.I thought Brycen Hopkins looked good, really fast. Blanton made some tough catches in traffic. I’m sure you heard Wagner was making plays all over the field. The defense won a lot but it really wasn’t fair with Stafford out of the rotation.
I know we have a lot of Perkins stans but by all indications Wolford is solidly #2 and Perkins did not look to me (or anyone i was sitting with) today.
Tutu made some plays but it was usually on plays that had broken down so i’m not sure what there is to be learned from that.

August 4, 2022 at 1:01 am #139956znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueAllen Robinson just caught a one-handed corner EZ TD with Kendrick draped over him and my jaw fell onto the grass. That was special..ME: Here’s a vid of that. I can only post the link:…Rams ‘managing’ Matthew Stafford’s arm; QB2 John Wolford takes over
IRVINE, Calif. — Matthew Stafford didn’t throw during Wednesday’s training camp practice, but head coach Sean McVay remains adamant that it’s all a part of “the plan” for the Rams’ 34-year-old quarterback.
Monday, McVay said Stafford was “still feeling a little bit of pain” in his arm/elbow, and that was the reasoning behind the visibly lighter workload Stafford had that day — which he clarified Wednesday was not a “setback” for Stafford.
“No, it’s consistent with what’s been going on,” McVay said. “When you really look at the totality of it, wanted to try to have him operate in as little pain as possible. I think that anytime that you’ve played as long or are as tough as he is, I don’t know if you’re ever truly ‘pain-free,’ but the goal would be for Sept. 8 and looking towards 17 games, hopefully some games after that … that’s kind of the perspective and the big-picture approach that we want to be able to take.
“I don’t know that I would be as comfortable taking that approach if it wasn’t for the experience that he’s accumulated and knowing how intentional he is about staying up to speed with his mental and physical work that he can do, in absence of some of the stuff in the team settings.”
Stafford had an anti-inflammatory injection in his arm in the spring and didn’t throw through OTAs. He did throw at the start of training camp, as part of what the Rams say is an “onload/de-load” process to get him ready not only for their Sept. 8 opener, but also for a very long season. While he has thrown in red zone and individual drills even on some “de-load” days, Stafford did not participate in team drills for the last two padded practices and isn’t likely to do so until the Rams are back in their regular facilities.
“We’re really taking it a week at a time, really a couple of weeks,” McVay said. “Don’t expect him to do anything in these team settings for this block or the next three days, next week. Nothing has changed. … This is part of the plan that we feel like is in his best interest.”
A few things can be simultaneously true:
• That Stafford and the Rams are trying to manage an ongoing arm issue that clearly bothered him in spots last season
• That the Rams are aware of this and have him on a dramatically different management plan than they did last offseason (when he took no snaps off)
• That they probably don’t want to make him throw at a high volume until he has to — when the Rams return to Thousand Oaks, Calif., later this month and actually begin installing their game plan for Buffalo
• And that an ongoing arm issue is legitimately a concern, though we don’t yet know how big of a concern, because when Stafford has thrown, he’s looked fine.
To me, the Rams are trying to control everything they can, while they can — because it’s unknown whether this issue will escalate through the course of the season.
So, Wednesday was No. 2 quarterback John Wolford’s second day with the first-team offense. He confirmed off-podium that was the expected plan entering training camp (that does at least jibe with McVay’s adamance that Stafford didn’t have a “surprise” setback).
“(Was it something that) I just realized out of thin air?” Wolford said sarcastically. “No, I think that was the plan from the get-go, is we knew training camp is long, and Stafford has played for, what is it, year No. 16 or whatever? (Editor’s note: Stafford is entering his 14th season.) There’s no reason to drive him into the ground. Yeah, I was anticipating (this) walking into camp.”
Wolford played really well with his increased snap share Wednesday. While he did miss receiver Cooper Kupp once or twice (once throwing too wide toward the sideline), he also hit second-year receiver Tutu Atwell on a 50-yard touchdown down the sideline in team drills early in the day.
Most jaw-dropping was Wolford’s work with veteran receiver Allen Robinson, to whom he threw multiple touchdown passes. By far the most impressive throw and catch of the day was a high pass from Wolford toward the back corner of the end zone, which Robinson stretched up to snag with one hand despite being draped by rookie cornerback Derion Kendrick.
“That was exciting,” Wolford said of Robinson, his eyes widening. “He’s been great. How quickly he’s gotten the offense is pretty unbelievable. He’s a pro’s pro. Comes in, works, and then he’s got freakish ability. He’s going to help our team a bunch, (and) I’m happy to get these reps with him. It’s nice and easy when you just throw it up there and go, ‘Ho-leeee shit.‘”
Wolford also found a rhythm with Kupp as the day continued.
The two were especially in sync later in practice, when Wolford hit Kupp on some pretty needle threads in the middle of the field (Kupp’s ability to get open in tight spaces is really interesting to watch, during practices when media can be so close to the action). They finished the day on a closely argued third-down throw and catch, which Kupp felt resulted in a touchdown as he crossed the plane (but was argued on a technicality of the team’s safety rules, in that receivers can’t stretch out for those types of scores).
“You talk to any of the guys (and they’ll say), ‘John goes about his business,’” Kupp said. “He’s got a process. … He’s pushing himself, he’s challenging himself to be the best version of himself so when he steps in and these kinds of situations come up, we can kind of move into that place (of) him (stepping) in and running the show.”
With Wolford likely running the first-team for all team and seven-on-seven periods over the next few days, it’s important that the Rams feel he can not only move the ball but also specifically get the receivers the type of work they need on a variety of throws.
“Those are the expectations I have for when I play,” he said. “You’re just busting your ass to be the best player that you can. I don’t try to put too much pressure on myself. I know every day I’m doing the best I can to be the best I can, and chips fall where they may. But I know if I’m doing that, then whatever anyone else says, I don’t give a shit. It’s just me trying to be me.”
More notes and observations from another Rams padded training camp practice:
(A reminder: The Rams often structure their live periods to run the second team against the first team on each side of the ball. First-team-versus-first-team periods will be specified in reports. Media members cannot report on schemes or the depth chart unless addressing it directly with a coach/player in an interview, but otherwise, the full practice is open to credentialed viewers.)
• McVay said he was “encouraged” by team doctors’ assessments following Van Jefferson’s surgery Tuesday. My understanding is that the surgery went very well and that it’s not out of the question to believe Jefferson could return by the Sept. 8 opener, in just under 40 days, but the team won’t rush him back. Meanwhile, McVay declined to place a public timeline on Jefferson’s recovery.
“Very optimistic that things went according to plan, and we’ll take this a little bit at a time,” he said.
• Third-year outside linebacker Terrell Lewis is moving well, but that’s not a new phenomenon. Lewis, who entered the NFL having to manage an ongoing knee issue, has been healthy for about a year at this point. But in 2021, he was a healthy scratch for the latter part of the season.
“It was frustrating,” Lewis said Wednesday. “I feel like I learned a lot from that whole situation. That’s another reason why I feel like I have that chip on my shoulder every day. My biggest goal lately is just like, ‘I want to play in a Super Bowl.’ That kinda bothered me a lot.
“Mentally it took me awhile to get over it and say, ‘What can you learn from that? What can you gain from this experience?’ … Of not only learning from a player like Von (Miller), but also learning the business and how things go throughout a season where you may just have to be the odd man out. … It definitely felt weird, just because I’ve never been out of a game other than health. So it just felt like, ‘Now that I’m healthy, why the hell am I not playing?’”
• It’s about that time of year when a few players start to emerge as “sticky guys” who could catch on to the roster for special teams (perhaps more).
Inside linebacker Jake Hummel was among those who drew praise from special teams coordinator Joe DeCamillis (remember, the Rams are trying to replace the substantial role Troy Reeder played in that phase) this week. I think Hummel may ultimately be in the mix for the “No. 4” spot at inside linebacker, with Travin Howard out for an unknown amount of time and Christian Rozeboom clearly the No. 3 (the No. 4 would largely contribute on special teams).
Meanwhile, receiver Brandon Powell is still clearly the No. 1 on punt and kick return, and in his first full camp with the team has been given opportunities on the first or second-team offense, too (especially lately with Jefferson out). Wednesday he got some opportunities run-blocking with the first team, and it’s clear he’s willing to sell out to grade the road as needed. Powell wouldn’t be in the “four-spot” or maybe even the “five-spot” of rotating receivers once Jefferson is back but is making a case for the Rams to keep him around.
As of now, I’d put Riley Dixon in the lead at the punter spot, but having Cameron Dicker’s versatility and competition around in training camp doesn’t hurt.
Outside linebacker Daniel Hardy can crack some playing time early on if he keeps up the good work on special teams.

August 5, 2022 at 4:12 am #139979znModeratorJourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigueLong way to go yet but I’ll say this, now that Brandon Powell is getting some opps in the offense it’s quite clear how willing he is to grade some road in run support..John Wolford and Bryce Perkins are leading individuals today, while Matthew Stafford is going through mobility/dropback work on the side with Zach Witherspoon (lead sports scientist) w/ no throw so far today. Pretty clear team is going to keep him on a specific plan until opener.August 5, 2022 at 9:15 am #139980znModeratorChecking in from @RamsNFL training camp… as hard as it is to repeat, I gotta tell you, the way the way the energy is here combined with a few of their additions, I really like what the Rams have cooking. @NFLonFOX #Rams#NFLTrainingCamp#GlazeAcrossAmerica #Football pic.twitter.com/KBE0bawZOK

AD not dressed, Jacob Harris not dressed but in tank top and shorts working out with trainer on sideline. No sign of Bobby Evans. He wasn’t at Monday’s practice either. Saturday he played most reps with 2nd team at RT. Something is up with Evans but haven’t heard a word from anyone why he’s a no show for 2 straight practices. Trade? Injury? McVay’s doghouse?Today was mostly lots of vanilla plays, I’m guessing 50 -60 snaps for almost 2 hours. 1st team O vs 2nd team D, 2nd team O vs 1st team D. Red zone, and hurry up drills mixed in. Some FG and punt snaps. Lots of substitutions, and mixing of OL and DL with just about everyone getting several snaps.
Ol looks to be getting sorted out. Noteboom LT, Edwards LG, Allen C, and it looks like Shelton, who got most of the snaps the last two practices is frontrunner at RG, and of course Havenstien at RT. Where it’s not so clear is who are backups at OL. A Jackson and T Anchrum are clearly backup LT and LG, they’ve both taken majority of snaps there and looked very good. Kolone took most snaps a C 2nd team today, with Snyder and Brewer getting in a few. Acuri and Ealy got majority of snaps at RT with 2nd team and Brewer and Bruss at RG. Looks like the right side of 2nd team OL is far from settled.
With so many snaps today I’m not gonna give any play by play, just some of what we all agreed stood out.
Both starting offense and defense look great and John Wolford really stood out today running the 1st team. He looks confident and his passes were crisp and mostly accurate. Defense held up good against the run (even without AD, Copeland took his place). Floyd and Hollins were and handful, but Noteboom and Havenstien kept the pocket intact. Not to worry folks. Noteboom looks very comfortable and smooth out there, nice footwork and hand placement. Only one to give him trouble is T Lewis. I’ll get to him later.
1st team D was pretty dominating today. Wags in the backfield several times, broke up a couple passes. Rochelle with a pick. Drurrant played a lot of snaps with 1st team and had to defend Kupp and Robinson quite a few times. He did pretty good. All I can say about Rams 1st team D is going to be very good.
2nd team D was a lot of mixing up of players. But DE’s stayed the same for most of practice. Garrett at LDE and Lewis at RDE got most reps today. Both put good pressure all day. Lewis is impressing. NO brace and he stays out there play after play after play. Both play the run good too.
Later they put 1st team vs 1st team. They really got after it with some hard hitting. Wags got to Wolford on a blitz. Wolford hit Atwell for a deep pass.
Some player notes. Some guys I don’t need to say anything, like Akers, Kupp or Henderson, they look great. Robinson is outstanding.
Atwell continuing to get open and catches everything. I’m really liking how he’s showing up.
Wolford has taken another step and ran the 1st team O very well today. Good decision making going through his reads quick and threading some passes through tight windows to Kupp, Robinson, Higbee and Atwell.
Perkins was a bit of a dissapointment to me today. If his 1st read isn’t there, he runs. Later in the day he threw 2 picks back to back plays. He’s not moving ahead of Wolford anytime soon.
Powell is looking better and getting more touches with the 2nd team.
Rose and Ragas finally getting some touches. Calias in the mix.
Kendrick and Durrant getting a lot of work and both look to be ahead of where Rochelle was when he came in as a rookie.
Garrett and Lewis are way ahead of where they were last camp.
Bobby Brown is unmovable at NT, but looks out of shape, 2 or 3 plays and he comes out looking gassed. He has six games to sit out so he has time to get in better shape.
August 5, 2022 at 9:29 am #139982znModeratorAllen Robinson II and Tutu Atwell shine, plus a pick for Nick Scott: 10 Observations from the fifth open practice of 2022 Training Camp
Stu Jackson
IRVINE, Calif. – Wednesday’s practice at 2022 Rams Training Camp presented by UNIFY Financial Credit Union saw plenty of catches by wide receivers Allen Robinson II and Tutu Atwell, and safety Nick Scott making a nice interception.
Here are 10 observations from the session:
1) More reps for Wolford: With starter Matthew Stafford not throwing and working off to the side, and later watching from the sideline, backup John Wolford led the first team offense during individual and team drills Wednesday. Rams head coach Sean McVay said Wednesday’s approach to Stafford’s workload was part of his plan, and emphasized he isn’t concerned about Stafford.
2) Robinson one-hands it: During 7-on-7 redzone drills, Robinson made an impressive one-handed grab in the corner of the endzone. Robinson also had impressive catch in the back of the endzone a few plays earlier.
3) Nick with the pick: Scott made a nice play on a Bryce Perkins pass over the middle intended for Brandon Powell in 11-on-11, jumping in front of it to make the interception.
4) Touchdown Tutu: While their were multiple catches throughout the afternoon that impressed the crowd, the loudest cheers came on a 50-yard touchdown catch by Atwell on a pass from Wolford.
5) Hall-ing it in: Defensive back Tyler Hall also had an impressive interception during 11-on-11 redzone work, catching an interception on a Perkins pass as he was falling backwards in the endzone on a broken play.
6) Another sideline grab for Kupp: Whether it’s Wolford or Stafford under center, Kupp finds ways to make impressive catches. He had one near the sideline on Wednesday that drew lots of “oohs” from the fans in attendance.
7) Robinson shows other aspects of skillset: Rams players and coaches have consistently mentioned Robinson’s (perhaps untapped) versatility, and it showed on Wednesday. While that one-handed grab was impressive, he also made a nice one over the middle in traffic.
8) Tight coverage: Speaking of catches in traffic, Ben Skowronek also had a solid one during 11-on-11 work, hauling in a short pass from Wolford as the three defenders closed in on him.
9) Jones’ instincts: Ernest Jones had a pass breakup (near interception) that drew an audible reaction from the crowd during team drills.
10) Rest day for Donald: McVay said after Wednesday’s practice that they gave Aaron Donald the day off. “We’re gonna continue to be smart with him, just with the experience that he’s accumulated,” McVay said. “He’s feeling good, but we want to be smart with him, with his workload, just going into year nine.”

Great throw by John Wolford, great catch by Tutu Atwell who hangs on to a long ball with Durant physically contesting at catch point. Think that’s what coaches want to see, IMO.Greg Beacham@gregbeacham
And now Tutu has to come back for Bryce Perkins’ underthrown bomb and still gets up between Troy Hill and Nick Scott to haul it in. Tutu is absolutely showing out today at Rams camp.Jourdan Rodrigue@JourdanRodrigue
Here’s an interesting note: Sean McVay extremely pleased with Coleman Shelton so far through camp and says he’s starting to “separate himself” and loves his interior versatility.Looks like Van Jefferson is gonna do some light rehab work to the side of practice today.
More from McVay: “Good step in the right direction” and on schedule for Stafford’s increased workload (“the plan all along”).
– Garrett hurt his groin, “days or weeks” timetable.
– More precautious on Floyd ankle
– Frustration with pre-snap penalties from offense, credits def.First day back in full team periods for Jalen Ramsey: Two INTs, including one in the end zone vs. Kupp (that he punted in celebration afterward).
