Rams Sign K Cairo Santos
Myles Simmons
Rams InsiderThe Rams have made a change at kicker.
Though head coach Sean McVay said on Monday that there’s a chance All-Pro Greg Zuerlein could return from his groin injury this week, Los Angeles elected to waive Sam Ficken on Tuesday and sign Cairo Santos.
Originally an undrafted free agent out of Tulane, Santos played 51 games for the Chiefs from 2014-2017. In that time, Santos connected on 84.8 percent of his field goals and 96.2 of his extra points.
Santos, however, suffered a groin injury early in the season last year, and ended up being waived/injured in September. He signed with the Bears in November, kicking with them for two games. He hit one-of-two field goals — though the second came from over 50-yards out — and hit both extra points.
The Tulane product signed with the Jets in the 2018 offseason, but was cut during training camp. He recently tried out for the Browns in September, and had a successful tryout with L.A. on Tuesday.
Kai Forbath — who has spent time with Washington, New Orleans, and Minnesota — also tried out for the Rams on Tuesday.
Santos is expected to serve as Los Angeles’ kicker until Zuerlein is ready to return.
L.A. added two players to its practice squad on Tuesday: edge rusher Ja’Von Rolland-Jones and defensive back Linden Stephens.
Additionally, the Rams have waived outside linebacker Carlos Thompson — who was on injured reserve. And the club has cut defensive end Marcus Martin from the practice squad.

– Signed K Cairo Santos
– Waived LB Carlos Thompson from injured reserve.
– Cut DE Marcus Martin from practice squad.
– Signed DE Ja'Von Rolland-Jones and DB Linden Stephens to practice squad.
I believe one more player can be added to main roster.— Rich Hammond (@Rich_Hammond) October 2, 2018
One more player can be added to the roster. Plus one more when they eventually cut Santos.

Talking about Ogbo Okoronkwo.

#Rams are 15th in blitz percentage at 25.2 percent37.8 percent of the plays the #Rams run, result in a first down. That’s the best mark in the #NFL
The #Rams have fewer three and out drives – three – than games played: four
On the flip side – and one way or another this needs to get better – the #Rams are 31st in defensive hurries.

I think part of that is the lack of edge rush and PART is teams are extremely conscious of the fact that they have to get rid of the ball early.

Rams now have allowed the fewest sacks (5) and QB hits in the NFL this season.Starters not present at Rams practice today: Rodger Saffold, Marcus Peters, Tyler Higbee. McVay made no mention of issues with any of them when he spoke before practice. Higbee left Thursday with a knee issue and Peters obviously has a calf issue.

Sean McVay talks a lot about how his players grasp “the intent” of plays. Most recently, with respect to his OL.
Here’s his in-depth explanation of why that’s so integral to the #LARams averaging 35ppg in 2018. pic.twitter.com/7JSQEKVpdm

This is how #Rams center John Sullivan explained a big part of the #Rams success to me today. “We have smart players all over the field and superstar coaches who are able to teach the system to us. All 11 guys understand why we’re doing things and what we’re trying to accomplish”More from #Rams John Sullivan: “We do it a little different than most teams…This is the most connected team I’ve ever been a part of. This is the smartest football team I’ve ever been on.”
Okoronkwo can start practicing (if he’s cleared physically) in two weeks (or after the sixth week of the season) Then the #Rams have three weeks to decide if he’s going to be put on the 53-man roster or Injured Reserve list
I think the chances of Ogbonnia Okoronkwo redshirting this year – unless he just can’t get back physically – are much less likely now. He might be just what the doctor ordered in a month or so.
#Rams OLB Dominique Easley underwent knee surgery today. Looks like it’s probably a season ending IR situation.
Congrats to #Rams RT Rob Havenstein the proud papa of a baby girl. Born Saturday morning. Everyone is doing great and Rob can’t stop smiling.

from Rams Q&A recap: Vinny Bonsignore
McVay calls the plays. But Jared has green light at line of scrimmage to make calls.
Obo: Obviously medical team has to check off on it, and then he’ll have to show them in practice he’s healthy. But if all checks out I expect him to begin practicing the week of the 49ers game
They want/need more production from their OLB’s. They are pleased with Littleton. They like their CB depth at the moment but always looking
Jared told me the other day his dad and Sean’s dad went to high school together. Crazy
They’re set up to be able to resign Jared and Marcus, but the way the system works they’ll likely lose some guys. The key is to keep drafting well (and shrewdly trading) and developing to replenish around the core pieces.
There’s been some Barron on the field sightings so there’s optimism he’ll be back this week. Same with Greg. JoJo was on the field yesterday fielding punts. He’s a tough SOB so it won’t be about the pain,. It’ll be can he secure the ball with the left hand bandaged? Peters was not at 100 percent. Got to monitor that this week
It was Goff’s best game for sure. And he’s putting together a string of them. Wish people could see him behind scenes as well. He’s really maturing and growing and coming into his own as a player and person. Really smart. Funny, dry sense of humor. It’s all starting to come out.

i wouldn’t expect him to start. but if he could even just contribute in passing downs, that’d be a success. it’s not like he’s got much competition in front of him.

Obo will at the max be a situational pass rusher … but
.. we kinda need that badly.Longacre is not getting it done and Ebukam is a half step late right now.
We need one more quick twitch rusher.

Rams’ defense pressuring opposing quarterbacks more than any other team
Rams’ defense pressuring opposing quarterbacks more than any other team
Posted by Michael David Smith on October 3, 2018, 12:33 PM EDTEveryone knows the Rams’ offense is setting the world on fire, but the Rams’ defense probably deserves more credit for the team’s 4-0 start.
Particularly impressive is the Rams’ pass rush, which is putting pressure on opposing quarterbacks more frequently than any other defense in the NFL. According to Chris Trapasso of the Buffalo News, using data compiled by Pro Football Focus, the Rams’ defense has faced 157 dropbacks and pressured the quarterback on 65 of those dropbacks. That’s a pressure rate of 41.4 percent, the best in the NFL.
The Rams have only recorded eight sacks this season, with defensive tackles Aaron Donald and Ndamukong Suh as the team’s co-leaders with two sacks apiece. But sacks don’t tell the whole story. Pressuring the opposing quarterback into getting rid of the ball quickly is an important part of having a good defense even if you don’t take down the quarterback. For the Rams in particular, who have spent most of the season playing from ahead, they’re able to tee off on a quarterback who’s trying to bring the team back from behind.
Keeping Jared Goff upright is the most important priority for the Rams, but getting after the opposing passer is also a very important element in their success this year.
