The #49ers have lost starters Malcolm Smith, George Kittle and Solomon Thomas to injury. Matt Breida is now down on the field. It’s still the first quarter. #DALvsSF

There’s nothing more important in a preseason game than coming out of it as healthy as possible, at least when it comes to your starters. To that end, the 49ers had something of a disastrous night against the Dallas Cowboys. Despite planning to play their starters for only a series or two, the Niners watched as three projected starters and two key backups departed suffered various ailments. Linebacker Malcolm Smith (hamstring), tight end George Kittle (shoulder), defensive lineman Solomon Thomas (head), running back Matt Breida (shoulder) and tackle Garry Gilliam (head) left with injuries and did not return to the game. The extent of those injuries remain to be seen but it’s still alarming to see so many of them this early, especially given how many health issues the 49ers dealt with last season. For a roster that is still in need of proven depth, any injuries to starters before the season begins are cause for concern
