    this week’s mailbag.

Farr: OL sleeper? Keep an eye on Demby. S Joseph-Day getting nothing but better. They have a real competition at NT and might have 2 guys who can start. There’s more there but I especially noticed those 2 bits.

@VinnyBonsignore Vinny. Will the Rams follow the [Eagle’s] footstep [signing Wentz] or wait? No pressure for them to do so.

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
I don’t have any real sense on that, just yet. But it is interesting that Jared and Carson share the same agents….

When it’s all said and done after this round of contracts for the top QB’s of the 2016 draft, by contract value it will be:

    1. Jared Goff
    2. Carson Wentz
    3. Dak Prescott
Order would have been flipped based on rookie seasons – which is why making knee-jerk reactions is dumb

    Michael David Smith@MichaelDavSmith
Will be interesting to see what if anything the Carson Wentz contract does for kickstarting any negotiations between Jared Goff and the Rams. I have a hunch Sean McVay thinks a lot of QBs can succeed in his offense and doesn’t think the Rams need to break the bank to keep Goff.

    Vincent Bonsignore@VinnyBonsignore
Can I get a definition of a hunch?

The Eagles have been one of the NFL’s most proactive teams in extending contracts of core players. It’s something @JoeBanner13 started in the 1990s. There are numerous reasons why players hit the open market rather than sign contract extensions.

    Darren DeGaetano@DarrenDegaetano
you categorize Wentz’s FLOOR as Goff’s STARTING POINT. Its irresponsible.

    Joel Corry@corryjoel
You obviously don’t know how actual NFL contract negotiations work. It would be irresponsible for Jared Goff’s agent not to take that position. Jared Goff getting more than Carson Wentz isn’t some outlandish proposition.

I’m just telling you how this stuff is probably going to work based on my experience as an agent whether you think it should or not.

It’s common sense. The same agent is going to continually insist upon bettering the deal he just did for another client at the same position who was taken one pick later in the same draft. I know I would if representing both Carson Wentz & Jared Goff.

Once upon a time, Joe Flacco was the NFL’s highest paid player.

The amount of Cowboys fans that aren’t sold on Dak and don’t want to give him the $ that Wentz just got is eye-opening.

Most of the responses to this just reinforce that you’re either Brady, Mahomes, or you “suck”.

That’s where we are in society in 2019.

The #Rams are taking their rookie draft class on a tour of the new stadium in Inglewood today. They just announced the signings of Dakota Allen and Nick Scott this morning and I suspect their entire class will sign their contracts today.

Whitworth seems like he would make a good coach. He’s not just football-smart, like say, Faulk, but he seems like he’s got coach-smarts as well.

I just hope his knees are smart this year. And his ankles.

    Texans fired GM Brian Gaine.

    Ian Rapoport@RapSheet
On the #Texans GM firing: My understanding is there was no one incident that created the opening. Houston did an evaluation of its football operations and believes — right or wrong — GM Brian Gaine was not good enough. Good, but not good enough. Stunning.

18 months ago, Brian Gaine was #Texans coach Bill O’Brien’s choice as GM. He left a great situation in Buffalo, the team went 11-5, made the playoffs and now he’s out. It is a cold-blooded business.

    Warren Sharp@SharpFootball
Houston burned 2 years of Watson’s cheap rookie-deal & did virtually nothing exceptional in free agency or the draft to “load up” for a title run, a la the Eagles, Rams, Bears & now Browns.

Not only that, they’ve forced Watson to play behind arguably the NFL’s worst O-Line.

Tyreek Hill will reportedly not face criminal charges in a child abuse investigation involving his three-year-old son

    Michael McCann@McCannSportsLaw
Tyreek Hill situation illustrates how burdens of proof matter in law. It appears the police believe Hill or his fiancée, Crystal Espinal, is responsible for injuries to their son, but can’t prove which of the two did it–so can’t prove either is guilty beyond a reasonable doubt.

    Pro Football Rumors@pfrumors
There’s no active investigation against #Chiefs star Tyreek Hill, but he’s not out of the woods with the NFL

There’s way too much copycat honking about the negative impact of a big QB contract on a team’s salary cap … in a league where most teams have more cap space than they use or need.

The @RamsNFL PR staff led by @artistwyman, which was lauded for excelling in helping Southern California and national media cover the club during a season when the Rams advanced to Super Bowl LIII, has been selected as the 2019 Pete Rozelle Award winner by the PFWA.

    Steve Wyche@wyche89
This is so awesome and sooooo well earned. Props to @RamsNFL PR staff. There are some great media relations staffs around the league so this is a huge and properly deserved honor.
