DeSean Jackson posts anti-Semitic fake Hitler quotes, vows no hate toward Jewish community

    https://www.usatoday.com/story/sports/nfl/2020/07/07/desean-jackson-philadelphia-eagles-receiver-posts-fake-hitler-quotes/5389126002/?utm_campaign=snd-autopilot

Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver DeSean Jackson posted several fake Adolf Hitler quotes to his Instagram story over the past few days, drawing immediate backlash and prompting Jackson to clarify he has no hatred toward the Jewish community.

In the initial post from the July 4 weekend that raised eyebrows for its anti-Semitic tone, a fake quote from Hitler said World War III would be started to stop White Jewish people in America from oppressing the Black community. Jackson reposted the fabricated quote on his Instagram story Monday with his clarification to some of the backlash. According to Snopes, the quote “originated in an unsourced article published by a disreputable web site, and which appears to loosely string together an entire ecosystem of impossibly farfetched and completely unsourced conspiracy theories.”

“Anyone who feels I have hate towards the Jewish community took my post the wrong way,” Jackson wrote. “I have no hatred in my heart towards no one !! Equality. Equality.”

Then, after his clarification post, the 33-year-old receiver posted another quote that read, “This will extort America, their plan for world domination won’t work if the Negroes know who they are.” In that post, Jackson scribbled out other portions.

Messages made by USA TODAY Sports to the Eagles organization regarding Jackson’s posts were not immediately returned. Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie and general manager Howie Roseman are both Jewish.

Former Eagles president Joe Banner quickly condemned Jackson’s social media postings.

“If a white player said anything about AA’s as outrageous as what Desean Jackson said about Jews tonight there would at least be a serious conversation about cutting him and a need for a team meeting to discuss,” Banner wrote over Twitter. “Which would be totally appropriate. Absolutely indefensible.”

In the past two days, Jackson also has posted on Instagram praising the preacher Louis Farrakhan, who is considered to be an anti-Semitic extremist by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

Jackson, a three-time Pro Bowler, signed a three-year deal with Philadelphia last year after being traded from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

What DeSean Jackson posted last night, while being a fake quote, was inappropriate and 100% anti Semitic. I’ve found the locker room is generally unaware (ignorant) about Judaism and anti-Semetism. That doesn’t excuse what he posted, nor the weak defense of the post.

I’ve generally had great discussion about Judaism in the locker room. Most guys are curious. The biggest question I receive is why we don’t believe Jesus was the messiah. But again, pleasant convos. I did have two teammates attempt to convert me.

One teammate in college asked if we celebrate Thanksgiving… an American holiday.

As someone who is of Jewish heritage, I think we should forgive DeSean Jackson. He did not know what he was saying, and even if he did, forgiveness is an attribute of the strong; and the Jewish people have always been strong, through everything thrown their way. Forgive him.

yeah of course we should forgive him but it shouldn’t get swept under the rug and let go without any repercussions. Anti semitism along with any prejudice or discrimination is never ok

I’m sorry, but if a 33-year-old doesn’t know the implications of invoking Adolf Hitler’s name, and pulling a quote like this (whether it’s properly attributed or not), all of that is 100 percent on them.

    So, about DeSean Jackson.

There are many American Jews, mostly of my parents’ generation but some younger, who are currently struggling to reconcile both having white privilege *and* belonging to a group of historically oppressed and marginalized people.

It can be hard to accept that privilege when your parents or grandparents escaped the hell of the Holocaust or pogroms to reach America, only to be treated as second-class citizens.

    “How do *I* have privilege?”

I hope the anger they likely feel about DeSean Jackson (mis)quoting Hitler — and I’m mad as hell about it — helps them better understand the anger Black Americans feel almost constantly.

I don’t think Jackson thinks he’s an anti-Semite. But he and others have perpetuated anti-Semitic rhetoric because our education system never taught them better. It’s the same system that taught us that Columbus was a hero, or that didn’t teach us about Tulsa at all.

Anti-Semitism is a scourge, but it is not an institutionalized evil like racism. I don’t have to worry how my Judaism will affect how police view me. I have the luxury of hiding it from people who might harm me if they knew I was Jewish.

Anti-Semitism is REAL and Jackson (and so, so many others) need to do the work. But plenty of the same Jews admonishing him likely have some work to do as well.
