BTW in case this isn’t clear, I am not arguing or nothin like that, just thinking out loud.

    that’s how i read it.

makes me wonder what carroll’s plan is. do they drop guys in coverage? make it harder for goff to find clear passing lanes. but then i’m assuming mcvay’s plan is to pound the ball with plenty of play action.

whatever the case this should be a good learning experience for goff.

you posted it on the goff game 4 thread.

    nfl matchup on espn.

so it’s percentage of dropbacks. thing is rams are near the bottom in pass attempts. so while the total may be low the percentage is high. mcvay’s playcalling is having an effect.

so i got a question. a lot of talk about the oline and they’ve done a good job. but then i read that stat that says goff has been under pressure 6th most in the nfl. so what am i missing? is it a credit to goff that he’s able to get rid of the ball quickly?

depending on how everything goes rams could have their qb head coach combo for at least a decade. that’s huge. i mean i’m stating the obvious here but when i look at stability around the league it’s because that team has their head coach and qb in place. not the only difference but a pretty big deal.

still too early to know for sure.

seattle vulnerable to the run. gurley should have a big day.

seattle’s starting running back is hurt.

I don’t believe thaT almost interception they keep referring to is that bad of a pass. I don’t think the DB could have caught it. Dak’s throw that Trumaine almost intercepted was a much worse throw. imo

i agree. i don’t think the db had any chance. goff threw it to a spot only higbee could get too.

dak, on the other hand, coulda had 3 or 4 interceptions.

In Super Bowl era, biggest increase in scoring from one year to the next is 15.1 ppg by 1999 Rams. So far, 2017 Rams have 21.5-ppg increase.

    that’s pretty crazy.

just trying to not to get too far ahead. seattle next.

four games worth of tape on jared in the mcvay system. i wonder what seattle, jacksonville, and arizona have cooking.

but i’m also sure that mcvay and staff know what jared has to work on and are chipping away.

the whites look really awesome actually. just need to remove the remaining yellow on it.

i’ve read that they may only have to wear the blues one more time this season. so hopefully won’t see too much of it.

not quite the gsot. this is a young group of skill position players. goff isn’t quite 23 yet. gurley is only 23. cooper kupp is older than both of them weirdly enough at 24. watkins is only a day older than cooper. everett is 23.

that gsot team was way more experienced. even warner had played a lot of football before he got his big break. torry and az were the two young guys, but they weren’t expected to do a lot that first year.

good thing though is this group had a little bit of time to grow and gel together. should be fun.

saw this over at the herd. apparently, kansas city used this to burn new england. then new england used it against new orleans. apparently, mcvay saw how well it works and used it yesterday.

Seems to me that McVay is smart enough to see what he has, and use it.

I think he drafted Everett to give him that weapon, but Everett is a rookie. Wait and see how he uses him later this season, or next season.

In the mean time, he has other weapons that are effective. He will get around to the TE when the TE is ready.

i honestly didn’t expect mcvay to use todd quite this much. i actually think he needs to ease up, and he said as much in his interview today which i was glad to hear.

but yeah. everett’s a rookie. i think he definitely has a bigger role to play in the future.

i noticed that brockers was lining up as a defensive end. i like it. he seems like a new player. if it works go with it. get your three best defensive linemen on the field.

this was probably obvious to everyone but me. but the whole time i kept thinking mcvay in washington centered his offense around reed. then they draft everett. and i was thinking he was going to try and run the same offense he did at washington.

but it should have been obvious to me that he was going to base his offense around the most talented player on his new team, todd gurley. and todd has taken that role and really flourished. he’s just a complete back now. all three downs. running, catching, blocking. whatever. and i’m sure mcvay will keep giving gurley more and more responsibility, and gurley seems ready to accept more responsibility. it’s fun to watch. mcvay must be licking his chops trying to find more ways to get gurley the ball.

    also want to add this.

everybody’s talking about the new passing scheme and yeah it’s great. they rank like fifth in passing offense while they only rank 16th in rushing offense.

but guess what? if you look at attempts, they rank something like 27th in passing attempts per game, and they rank 7th in rushing attempts per game.

i don’t know if this has been posted before, but i thought that was interesting as well. almost as if he’s more concerned with establishing the running game. and with passing he’s more concerned with the quality of the passes rather than just trying to throw it all the time. plus this is a play action offense so a lot of it is probably tied into that as well.

but really to me this is more of a run oriented offense that can gash defenses with the pass.

now defenses are adjusting and playing deep so i expect the rams to run it even more to get those defenses closer to the box.

also as goff matures maybe mcvay loosens the reigns a little bit and they start passing it more. but right now they are geared more toward running the ball.

And Goff visibly had a harder time finding people. Not to a bad extent, obviously, but he was a bit less quick and fluid and accurate in this game.

So before today he completed 70.4% of his passes; today it was 58.3%.

i wasn’t sure, but it’s not surprising given how much room he had to run. defenses are starting to adjust. and this should also speed up goff’s processing speed.

i’m also just thoroughly impressed by mcvay’s commitment to the run. we’re seeing the mcvay offense when he has a strong running game. fisher would be proud.

rob havenstein should get some love too for having to deal with lawrence. gave up 1 sack, but otherwise goff had time.

that right side has really come together.

the next 3 games will tell us more than the first 4 games. tough defenses coming up in jacksonville and arizona. and i don’t care what they say about seattle or what the stats say. i believe seattle’s defense will also be a tough test. divisional team. those are always tough although i’m not too sure how familiar they will be with the mcvay offense.

i think after those 3 games we’ll have the most accurate picture of what the rams have in goff.

and i also want to say this. washington has the third ranked defense in the entire league based on yards per game. 12th ranked pass defense. 2nd ranked rush defense. on football outsiders they are also ranked third in overall defense. now i know it’s early in the season and these rankings could change, but if they were to hold up, washington will be the toughest defense the rams will have faced all season.

goff played pretty well i thought up until the fourth quarter in that game. a defense that is currently ranked the third best defense in the league. that’s impressive for a guy who at the time was only starting the ninth game of his career. i guess we’ll see how it all unfolds.

it’s also kinda funny to me that the rams run it almost as much as they pass it. maybe it’s partially to protect goff, but as sophisticated and as creative as the passing game has been, mcvay has also done an excellent job revitalizing the running game. although maybe they go hand in hand.

    goff at the quarter mark.

    117 attempts
    78 completions
    1072 yards
    7 tds
    1 int
    112.2 rating

    on pace for.

    468 attempts
    312 completions
    4288 yards
    28 tds
    4 ints

    his ypa plummeted to 9.2.

on the season he has 362 rushing yards 4 rushing tds and 234 receiving yards and 3 receiving tds.

that’s on pace for 1448 rushing yards and 16 rushing tds and 936 receiving yards and 12 tds.

as much as i like seeing that, they gotta ease up on him. too many touches. hopefully, tavon has found another role in addition to that jet sweep. i think he has. malcolm brown too.

I find the use of Tavon as a back up RB to spell Gurley interesting. I know he was used there occasionally under Fisher, but it appears that it will be a more regular feature this season. He had some good drive extending runs today.

    agree.

The reached the end zone a disappointing two times, but the put together a lot of drives, obviously. They scored on nine drives.

agree. and i think as goff matures. as he learns. as the whole offense learns. those fgs become tds. and that’s crazy. cuz as good as the offense looked, they can get better. it’s really up to them.

Offense looked really good, even though they had to settle for too many field goals, and the defense stepped up in the second half.

give them some more games and an offseason. they aren’t even a finished product yet. not even close.

they could have just folded. and we wouldn’t have been too disappointed if they had remained competitive.

but they actually came back and won that game. on the road. in a tough environment. against a talented team. gurley comes up huge again. goff shows he can play in big games. defense tightens up in the second half.

    seattle up!
