i watched the second half of the game yesterday again. i had to step away for awhile. yeah. this defense needs work. i realize that this is the number one scoring offense they went up against, but they still need to do better. that’s even realizing that they lost webster early and trujo later. part of it was committing dumb penalties. although truth be told. that flag on trujo was bs.
still goff had a chance to put this game away in the fourth quarter. maybe he thought he had to make a play with the way the defense was playing. but he’s gotta be smarter with the ball. these things happen. i don’t think it was a matter of not being clutch. i just think he really badly wanted to make a play.
one thing about that int. a couple plays before goff showed great pocket presence i thought. spun away from a couple defenders. and instead of panicking, he stood strong and delivered a simple pass to gurley for a good gain. one problem. havenstein gets hurt on the play and guess what? williams, who replaced havenstein, gets beat by long for the strip sack.
it happens. goff needs more seasoning. i think we pretty much all realized that before the season started. this just emphasizes that. but what we’ve seen is really promising, no?
before the game we marveled at his ability to shrug bad plays off. and i still think that’s true. and that’s a good thing. that’s what all the clutch players do. cuz they make plenty of non-clutch plays. it’s their ability to shrug those bad plays off and still want the ball in their hands. just give him another offseason. give the receivers another offseason. they’ll be fine.
gurley really showed me something. he’s still third on my list of favorite running backs. but he really showed up yesterday. he keeps getting better. and he isn’t even close to reaching his potential yet. just love his playing style. i like the goff gurley backfield. i think that duo is definitely by second favorite backfield of all time.
in 99, that offense was all potential realized. it was composed of people who had a lot of professional football played under their belts. even warner toiled in the arena league and nfl europe before that season. holt was the lone rookie starter on that offense although there was hakim who was in his second year.
but this offense. you have a very very raw sophomore qb. i think we forget that a lot of times. as a rookie, he was about as raw a qb can be. he’s still only 23. he doesn’t even have a full 2 seasons under his belt. shoot he didn’t even have a full season under his belt entering this season. he’s switched offensive schemes once already. and you know what. he’s still played very well this season despite that. i’m not a laker fan. but i’ve tracked his career living in this area. you can’t help but not. i see shades of kobe in goff’s career. a lot of talent. but very green. he didn’t really take off until phil jackson became the lakers head coach. he had talent. he was fearless. but he lacked maturity. that’s what goff needs. he needs maturing.
then you got gurley who’s still only 23 years old in his third season. faulk was still playing for indianapolis at 23. he didn’t even reach his peak years until age 25 his fifth season in the league, when he was coupled with a way too mature for his age peyton manning in his rookie year. gurley won’t even reach his fifth season until 2019 when he’ll be 25 years old. that’s crazy. just need some luck. combined with lots of hard work. and that duo will be something else.
the receivers. there’s no one on this team that can compare to isaac bruce, but woods is a very dependable receiver. i think not having him available really hurt this game. but you know what? maybe just maybe. for the long-term. goff having to play these stretch of games without his number one receiver will actually help him. i don’t know. just babbling a little bit at this point. maybe a little delirious cuz i’m sick. kupp compares very easily to holt. rookies. mature rookies. but still rookies. kupp i expect to be much better next season. which is pretty crazy considering kupp has the chance to top 1000 yards this season especially if woods misses more games.
i guess my point is that as long as the offensive line holds up, and considering the ages of whitworth and sullivan that’s a little worrying, this offense is still full of potential even as well as they’ve played this year. that’s different from the 99 team which pretty much hit the ground running.
Wentz is a gamer Goff could be as well but needs more seasoning held the ball way to long. Imo his competing with Wentz hurt the team. He did some great stuff as well. To me that D is way over rated. We need 4 quarters of run D .
goff is young and raw. a lot of that can be overcome by experience and development.
and if you don’t believe me. i remember kobe before the lakers started winning all those championships. he was NOT clutch. he was the exact opposite of clutch. i think he drove his teammates mad because he’d just continue jacking up balls and bricking them in late game situations. he even cost them some important games. but with experience. with honing his skills. he eventually became insanely clutch.
that doesn’t guarantee goff anything. but the one thing i read about him is his demeanor. no matter what the play before, he’ll get back up and go after it. he just needs to refine his skills. he needs experience. and hopefully, it happens.
and not just goff. that goes for gurley, kupp, woods, watkins, and the rest of them. it never happens overnight.
Having said all that about SF they are winning halfway through the 4th quarter.
hyde’s a tough runner. shanahan has a qb now. if shanny was hired for the rams, i’m not so sure the rams wouldn’t be just as successful. i think he’s a good coach. great scheme. maybe doesn’t have the personality of a mcvay. but then again. belichick never had that either.
then again. maybe shanny wouldn’t have sonofbum.
it’s crazy. people laughed when the rams and eagles traded up to grab these guys.
they’re looking better than luck/rgiii and mariota/winston at this point. i think it shows how much coaching and luck factor in sometimes. i think mariota under mcvay would be one helluva qb/coach combo. not to take anything away from goff.
yeah. at first i thought he said goff audibled, but no. you’re right. listening to the interview again, he said he made a bad audible, and goff had to improvise directing reynolds with his hand motion. that was a brilliant throw into a tight spot.
i don’t know where goff is in his development, but if he is a little too reliant on the headset and i have no idea of knowing if he is or isn’t, that wouldn’t be the biggest surprise to me anyway. he’s like what? in his second season with 18 games starting experience? i’m not too worried. he’s got a lot of offseason work and game experience to go before he’s the finished product. it’s not going to happen immediately. and i don’t necessarily think helping him over the headset is going to stunt his growth.
even arians said it was a useful tool especially with young qbs. and he’s developed some good ones.
