AgamemnonParticipantHey, Ag.
Just got home from vacation. I re-read Zelazny’s “Lord of Light” on the beach. What a great novel…
He was always up there in my pantheon, just not as high as Phil Dick; a must read, especially NOW.
He was one of my favorites too, all his work. I liked his Nine Princes in Amber best.

I did read a classic once. Jane Eyre? The comic book version. For a required book report in English.

AgamemnonParticipantif i’m the rams, i would. i’m gonna gamble that those first round picks are very low first round picks.
I don’t know how real that was though. Rams couldn’t afford the 14 M cap hit for Mack in 2018. Not without some serious heavy roster surgery.
They move $7M to future years, make $6M part of a signing bonus, pay him $1M this year. They are $6.8M under the cap now. They could squeeze him in. Barron could be structured. Brockers, too.
.
I don’t know if it would be wise. But they could do it without doing anything extra ordinary.-

The #Bears and star pass-rusher Khalil Mack have agreed to terms on a massive 6-year, $141M contract extension, source said. Total value: $155M over 7. $90M guaranteed. $60M fully guaranteed at signing. $23.5M new money average. Nicely done.23.5 M per year. 90 M guaranteed which is 3 more than Donald.
That was quick and painless. I would like to see the breakdown.

Los Angeles will be able to carry 54 players, as the club has received a roster exemption for defensive tackle Aaron Donald that expires on Sept 17, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport. Sunday will mark the team’s first practice with the reduced roster, as the Rams continue preparation for Monday Night Football in Oakland on September 10.
47 Codey McElroy is not listed in the Rams cut downs on their site, but he is not on the initial 53 man roster.
Maybe they cut him when they added that RB for the last preseason game and I missed it.

AgamemnonParticipantSome speculations.
I don’t think anyone guessed all of this–22.5 M annual avg. 6 years, high 80s guaranteed, huge bonus. And I mean no one, not on any board or in the media. Quite a few guessed the between 22 and 23 annual avg. but the rest was not guessable.
Part of what makes this deal unique is the combination of bonus money and guaranteed money. And that would be because of Kroenke. If I have the details on this right, a team has to have the cash set aside in advance to cover guaranteed money. And of course with the cap, most of the money for players comes through league revenue, but that’s not how signing bonuses work—the cap hit may be spread out over the length of the deal but the player gets the money upfront and for that you need cash flow.
So 2 things need cash flow money at hand—the guaranteed money and the bonus. AD got a huge bonus and a lot of guaranteed money, and then gave the Rams the years (6) and the annual avg. (22.5 is a bit less than the metrics say he should have gotten).
To me that looks like Kroenke’s advantage was cash on hand, and that allowed AD to compromise on years and annual avg.
I agree. No one got it all right. The unique thing is the large guarantee and the large upfront moneys. You need a lot of cash to do that.
AgamemnonParticipantBefore the end of the day, the #Bears are expected to negotiate a long-term deal with Khalil Mack that should eclipse the deal for Aaron Donald. Either way, Chicago just made a huge move.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 1, 2018
The price of trading for Khalil Mack was described to me late last night as 2 first-round picks and a player. There was only one team willing to do that. That is what may be going to the #Raiders in exchange for Khalil Mack.
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 1, 2018
It’s actually 2 first-rounders plus for Mack. https://t.co/gOutZd2tOD
— Ian Rapoport (@RapSheet) September 1, 2018
Getting 2 first-round picks back is a lot even for a superstar player. Among personnel people this morning, it seems like a toss-up. A rare win-win. Hard for either side to turn down. https://t.co/zlamHtxmaO

AgamemnonParticipantMy opinion:
Rams won on length of contract, and money per year. The money equals what you would pay a franchise DE. 10.4% of the est Cap.
Donald won on guaranteed money, and bonus money upfront. He gets a large portion of money early in the contract. Almost 2/3 of the gross amount.
In the end, the contract was good for both sides. imo

AgamemnonParticipantWith today's cuts the #Rams only have Whitworth, Havenstein and Noteboom at tackle. Jamil Demby played LT last night and was relatively solid there. Still can't see a scenario where the Rams do not go out and sign or claim an OT.

Rams Continue Friday Cuts
Clarence Dennis
Staff WriterThe Rams continued making roster moves Friday afternoon, submitting 12 more names to the league office ahead of Saturday’s 1 p.m. deadline.
The latest round of cuts includes:
Waived, No Recall
Bryant, Omarius (DT – Western Kentucky)
Clements, Chunky (DT – Illinois)
Eldrenkamp, Jake (C – Washington)
Hyeamang, Lord (DT – Columbia)
Kolone, Jeremiah (G – San Jose State)
Martin, Marcus (DE – Slippery Rock)
Mikell, Curtis (DB – Southern Mississippi)
Murphy, McKay (DT – Weber State)
Neary, Aaron (C – Eastern Washington)
Nixon, Taurean (DB – Tulane)
Scales, Tegray (LB – Indiana)
Womac, Brian (DE – Rice)
The team has now trimmed its roster by 24 names, moving closer and closer to the 53-man lineup that will head to Oakland for Monday Night Football in Week 1.
13 more to go, by tomorrow at 4PM est.
AgamemnonParticipantYou need money for guys on IR, typically ~$5M more or less, ~$1M cause what counts are 53 players now not 51, ~$1M for the practice squad. According to Spotrac the Rams have $7,421,122 left on the Cap. They could add a low cost player if they wanted, but they are on target. Any extra money left at the end of the year, they can rollover to next year. They had $4M from last year that they added to this year.

AgamemnonParticipantAlthough we don’t have the exact terms, we can break it down a bit.
.
This contract was modeled on von Miller’s contract. imo The overall numbers, adjusted for an est salary cap, fit. imo
.
The guaranteed money is more in line with Suh’s guarantees. imo
.
I think it is a good contract for the team and the player.August 31, 2018 at 12:39 pm in reply to: Rams, Aaron Donald Agree to Terms on Six-Year Extension #90161
AgamemnonParticipantRams now have the most expensive players in the NFL, relative to their positions per @Jason_OTC https://t.co/PfJiIIXBcH
— Joe Curley (@vcsjoecurley) August 31, 2018
$40M signing bonus is the largest for a non-QB. I think Charles Johnson was the highest ever at $30M. I think this is also the highest prorated number at signing for a non-QB (Megatron and Haloti Ngata at $36 and $35M) #Rams
— Jason_OTC (@Jason_OTC) August 31, 2018
Just to head off those “future cap jail” tweets, Rams were $58m under the cap for 2019 per @Jason_OTC. Don’t know next year’s AD cap number yet, but even after subtracting Donald’s $22.5m AAV from that figure, the Rams would have more cap room in 2019 than 20 NFL teams.
