AgamemnonParticipantWell not everything is for the average reader. If it were that would severely limit the range of discussion. Some stuff is for people already conversant with a field, so they can sharpen their sense of things. Then, some of those write for mainstream consumption.
It seems to me what would help reading that would be some knowledge of post-colonial history. Just the idea of it. For example, the crucial idea that post-colonial african and middle-eastern nations are not “organic” — they arose from some foreign power drawing lines on a map. Then leaving, and saying okay you’re a country now. That right there alone is one of the single most significant factors in 20th and 21st century history and drives more of our world experience than virtually any other political factor.
If you persist with that article it’s not so bad btw.

New Jeff Fisher, Les Snead deals may have one-year void provisions

LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA – AUGUST 13: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams works during warmups for the game against the Dallas Cowboys at the Los Angeles Coliseum during preseason on August 13, 2016 in Los Angeles, California. (Photo by Stephen Dunn/Getty Images) Getty ImagesWith the Rams five games away from concluding the five-year contract signed in 2012 by coach Jeff Fisher, league insiders continue to suggest that Fisher already has a new deal in place, along with G.M. Les Snead.
As one league source explained it to PFT, the theory/hypothesis/rumor currently making the rounds is that the contracts will cover multiple years, but will give the Rams the ability to void the contracts after one year.
If true, this means that the deals will actually be one-year Band-Aids masquerading as multi-year deals, giving the Rams the flexibility to cancel the arrangements without financial penalty after 2017.
The Rams consistently have said that there is no update regarding the contracts of Fisher and Snead, both of whom will become free agents absent new contracts. Recent comments from COO Kevin Demoff have been interpreted as a strong hint that Fisher will indeed be back.
AgamemnonParticipantRams extend Les Snead, too

ST. LOUIS, MO – DECEMBER 21: Les Snead, general manager of the St. Louis Rams looks on during warm ups prior to playing against the New York Giants at the Edward Jones Dome on December 21, 2014 in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Dilip Vishwanat/Getty Images) Getty ImagesRams coach Jeff Fisher isn’t the only guy who has gotten a new contract in L.A. G.M. Les Snead has a new deal, too.
PFT has confirmed that the new contract for the coach coincides with a new contract for the General Manager.
Snead, who was hired in 2012 from the Falcons front office, has worked closely with Fisher over the past five years. The fact that Fisher was hired before Snead created the impression that Fisher runs the show, and that Snead sets the table for the draft and free agency.
Snead presumably has a two-year extension as well. It’s unclear whether the extension previously was in place, but given that Fisher’s was, it’s safe to assume Snead’s was, too.

Jeff Fisher extension was signed “weeks ago”

MINNEAPOLIS, MN – SEPTEMBER 1: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams looks on during the fourth quarter of the game against the Minnesota Vikings on September 1, 2016 at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, Minnesota. The Vikings defeated the Rams 27-25. (Photo by Hannah Foslien/Getty Images) Getty ImagesFor most of the season, league insiders have insisted that the Rams and coach Jeff Fisher already have a new deal in place. In the aftermath of the news that Fisher has a two-year extension, Adam Schefter of ESPN reports that the deal indeed has been in place for “weeks.”
Which raises an interesting question about the contract: Why was the news of it leaked today?
It could be that the Rams and Fisher became increasingly antsy about the fan base’s willingness to accept a continuation of Fisher’s tenure with the team, given an all-out assault from Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson that has culminated in Dickerson recently playing the “where are the naked pictures?” card.
Then there’s the fact that the news was leaked only a few hours before the Rams face the Patriots, a franchise that has beaten Jeff Fisher-coached teams by the combined score of 104-7 in their past two encounters. Squatting on the secretly-signed contract until after the Patriots hang another 40 or 50 on the Rams would have made it a lot harder to justify the move.
And so while the Rams apparently were waiting for the right moment to announce the deal with Fisher, it could be that they decided there would be no right moment, and that the contract needed to be unveiled before the wrong moment became a worst-case scenario.

Two-year extension suggests 2017 will be up-or-out for Jeff Fisher

GLENDALE, AZ – OCTOBER 02: Head coach Jeff Fisher of the Los Angeles Rams walks the sidelines during the second quarter of the NFL game against the Arizona Cardinals at the University of Phoenix Stadium on October 2, 2016 in Glendale, Arizona. (Photo by Christian Petersen/Getty Images) Getty ImagesWhen it comes to contracts given to NFL players and coaches, the devil takes up permanent residence in the details. As to players, those details always become known. As to coaches, the nuances rarely make their way to the surface.
As to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, who officially has received a two-year extension, the biggest detail relates to the actual security Fisher has received. If, as some league insiders believe, the contract includes a one-year out for the team, Fisher has security only for 2017.
The winds had been blowing in the direction of Fisher staying put. Comments from COO Kevin Demoff strongly suggested that the team’s 4-7 record wouldn’t be held against Fisher, given the changes the team has endured in 2016.
Even without a one-year out clause in the new contract, 2017 now feels like an up-or-out year for Fisher. In 2012, Fisher received a five-year deal, and the exclamation point of commitment that went along with it. With only a two-year Band-Aid currently in place beyond 2016, the not-so-subtle message is that, while Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson isn’t getting what he wants for now, the change he craves could be coming in 2017

Rams’ Jeff Fisher gets extension; GM also extendedBy Kevin Patra

Published: Dec. 4, 2016 at 09:35 a.m.
Updated: Dec. 4, 2016 at 10:32 a.m.Despite staring at another losing record this season, Jeff Fisher isn’t going anywhere.
NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport reported Sunday on GameDay Morning the Los Angeles Rams signed the head coach to a two-year extension through 2018.
Per Rapoport, the deal was agreed to in the preseason and was signed during the season.
In addition, the Rams also have signed general manager Les Snead to a contract extension beyond 2017, a source informed of the situation told Rapoport.
Fisher entered the season in the final year of his deal.
While the Rams did not announce a deal was in place, questions about Fisher’s extension have swirled since the summer.
Speaking with NFL Network’s Steve Wyche recently, Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff was mum on an extension, but defended his coach’s performance this season.
“Everybody will want to judge Jeff through the prism of just the record, but that’s totally unfair when you look at the set of circumstances he was handed this year,” Demoff said. “It was different than any team in the NFL.
“We moved halfway across the country, then had OTAs in Oxnard. Training camp was in Irvine, now we’re in Thousand Oaks. We moved coaches and players and families. To provide leadership and consistency, he’s done a model job.”
In his first four seasons with the Rams, Fisher has guided the team to records of 7-8-1, 7-9, 6-10, and 7-9. The Rams currently sit at 4-7 with a difficult schedule down the stretch. Fisher hasn’t led a team to a winning season since 2008 and has just six seasons in his 22-year coaching career with more than eight victories.
Fisher was under heat locally this week, as Rams legend Eric Dickerson called for the coach to be fired.
Despite the uproar in Los Angeles regarding Fisher, the contract extension ensures that the coach will be around at least next season.
AgamemnonParticipant. His strategy is to limit possessions. Like what coaches do in basketball when there is no shot clock and they play a better team, “like the 4 corners offense”. This lets you steal games from better teams, but also makes the games close between lesser or equal opponents.
I don’t believe that’s his strategy. I think we’ve seen a lot of that with qbs they either ended up not seeing as starters, or never saw as starters (eg. Foles and Keenum). Now even with a rookie they play less like that (keeping it close) already.
Their strategy on offense, IMO, is to field a balanced attack. I don’t think the “play it close” thing has anything to do with it–I think that has been true recently, mostly because of the qb situation. But I already see that changing with Goff, even though he’s a rookie.
IMO people often talk about the Fisher offense when what they’re actually seeing is the Fisher offense without a quarterback.
…
All that is true, but I am not saying what you are. Look at it through the lens, QB or no QB, balanced or not.

AgamemnonParticipantI think a new OC overhaul and a 2yr deal from Stan will give Fisher the team he needs to win with now that we have a QB and RB.
I honestly think it is THIS simple.
They just needed the qb.
Having the qb will not turn them into the GSOT.
But they have the pieces to field a decent scoring offense IF they just have the qb.
Right now, it’s not really personnel that holds them back–it’s playing in a situation where they are always close, and have a slim margin of error. This has led to pressing, magnifying mistakes, having to have everything go right every play for it to work, etc. It strains the OL.
You put a qb in the middle of all that, and it increases the margin for error. It just comes together more effectively. I think of the Seattle example–until they had Wilson, they were a perpetual 7-9 team.
And of course I think Goff is that qb. He isn’t Wilson, he’s a different animal, BUT I also think he can be close to Wilson in QUALITY of play, just doing it differently.
.
.
I agree…with both things…what you said and what I said!

I DO think Goff is the right guy and will make this offense rank 15th…which is good enough for us to win with. imoI agree with that, except I am going to say the offensive line needs to play better.
But, since this thread is about Fisher, I will give an opinion how he plays the game. His strategy is to limit possessions. Like what coaches do in basketball when there is no shot clock and they play a better team, “like the 4 corners offense”. This lets you steal games from better teams, but also makes the games close between lesser or equal opponents. The result is, you steal a game, but you also lose a game/s. It is not, playing not to lose, like it has been characterized. imo If you watch his games through this lens, maybe you will agree?

I talked to Rams coach Jeff Fisher. He's extremely surprised by Eric Dickerson's public complaints given their phone conversation on Nov. 17
— Michael Silver (@MikeSilver) November 29, 2016
In that Nov. 17 conversation, Fisher said he explained his position to Dickerson and told him he wanted him to be part of the Rams' family
— Michael Silver (@MikeSilver) November 29, 2016
After the Nov. 17 conversation Dickerson texted Fisher to thank him for "being man enough to call me" and expressed his support…

So… what changed between that Nov. 17 text from Dickerson and yesterday? "I have no idea," Fisher told me.

Last year during a Rams-Cowboys joint practice Fisher had Dickerson line up & run "power" in the walkthrough portion. Again, he's surprised.

He didn't ban a legend. He told him he wanted to put him in a luxury suite, rather than on the sidelines, and explained why. The drama. Wow. https://t.co/DbE4hLJKE0

He wasn't threatened with "banishment." He was told his tickets would be in a luxury suite, rather than on sideline. Was invited to practice https://t.co/7Rfl3vIUJJ

Did Rams ban Eric Dickerson from the sideline?
Nov. 28, 2016
Updated 9:55 p.m.
Former Rams running back Eric Dickerson, here being honored Sept. 18 at a Rams Hall of Fame Ring of Excellence ceremony, says he was told he’s no longer welcome on the Rams sideline during games. The team says that’s not true.By RICH HAMMOND / STAFF WRITER
THOUSAND OAKS – In a bizarre, public spat, Hall of Fame running back Eric Dickerson claimed Monday that Rams coach Jeff Fisher told Dickerson he is no longer welcome on the sideline during Rams games. Fisher offered a very different interpretation of their phone call.
“As long as he’s the head coach, I’ll never come to a Rams game. I’ll watch them from a distance,” Dickerson, who spent parts of five seasons with the Rams in the 1980s, said on Fox Sports Radio on Monday night.
Dickerson first went on his own show, which he co-hosts locally on 570-AM and said an unnamed person from “upper management” called him and said he made Rams players uncomfortable with his radio comments. Dickerson, for weeks, has been openly critical of Fisher and Rams management.
Rams chief operating officer Kevin Demoff quickly took to social media to say the Rams would always welcome Dickerson at games, and then Fisher, at his weekly news conference at Cal Lutheran, was asked about Dickerson’s comments.
Fisher said, “I don’t know where that’s coming from,” and added that he “had a really good conversation with Eric last week.”
“We welcome the alums. We welcome the tradition and the history,” Fisher said. “So, I don’t know where that’s coming from, Eric. But, I did have a really good conversation with him last week, as I did Jackie (Slater) and Jack Youngblood.”
Fisher’s answer apparently didn’t sit well with Dickerson, who told Southern California News Group that Fisher had made the comments that Dickerson didn’t attribute earlier. Dickerson then gave an impassioned interview on Fox Sports Radio.
Dickerson said Fisher called him approximately 10 days ago, after Dickerson had asked the Rams for extra sideline passes for a couple friends.
According to Dickerson, Fisher told him the Rams are “not going to have you talking about the team and having you come on the sidelines. The players feel uncomfortable with you on the sidelines, and as long as I’m the head coach here, you come to the games and you’re not going to be welcome on the sidelines. The players are uncomfortable with it. So I listened to what he had to say. He went on and on.”
Dickerson reiterated, several times, that he would not attend Rams games with Fisher as coach. Fisher could not be reached for comment after Dickerson’s radio comments. In his press conference, Fisher said he would welcome Dickerson to the Rams’ practice facility.
“I’d love to have him come in and come to practice, have him come to meetings,” Fisher said. “(Former NFL running back) Eddie George has been to my meetings more than Eric Dickerson has. I’d love to have him here.”

AgamemnonParticipantRams deny banning Eric Dickerson from sidelines after his critical remarks
The Rams’ legend rushed for the seventh-most yards in NFL historyby Sean Wagner-McGough @seanjwagner 11m ago • 2 min read
The Rams are bad. You know this, it’s a safe bet that most of the Rams players know this, and Eric Dickerson definitely knows this. And that’s apparently a problem for the Rams, according to Dickerson.
The Hall of Famer, who is seventh all-time in rushing yards, said that he has been banned from the team’s sidelines.
“Someone from upper management called me and said I make the players feel uncomfortable about some of the stuff I say on the radio,” Dickerson said, according to TMZ. “They don’t want me on the sidelines. They don’t want me at the games. I was told this. They called me and told me this. Look, I love my football team. I want my team to win. If you got the nerve to call me and tell me that crap that I make the players feel — these are grown men.”
Dickerson continued, revealing what he told the person who called him.
“If you get fired, you will go someplace else, but I will still be Eric Dickerson of the Los Angeles Rams,” Dickerson said. “That’s why I wear that gold jacket. I have the right to say what I want to say.”
Shortly after the story broke, the Rams denied Dickerson’s claim.
So, what did Dickerson say that was so bad about the Rams? I’m not sure what specific comment caused this controversy, but back in September, Dickerson did have this to say about Rams coach Jeff Fisher, per Pro Football Talk:
“I like Jeff Fisher, I do. But liking a coach and then winning football games is two different things. It’s no different from a player that’s not performing. What do they do, they cut him or release him. The same thing with a coach, I mean, if you’re not gonna perform and you can’t have a winning football team, you’re just not gonna be there, especially in L.A.
“L.A. is a city [where] they want winners. You have to win in that city. I think it would be hard pressed for the Rams to go 4-12 or 5-11 this year or 6-10 and him keep his job. I mean, that’s just being honest about it. It’s all about winning in Los Angeles, because we don’t have those kind of fans that are just the loyal diehard fans like a Packers fan or a Steelers fan. I wish we did but it’s not there yet; the Rams have been gone for just too long.”
And he said this Monday:
Neither of those comments are even critical of the Rams. If a coach doesn’t win, he’s not going to last long, though Fisher has certainly proven to be an exception to that rule throughout his tenure as the Rams’ coach. Furthermore, Dickerson has a right to be frustrated with his perpetually bad-to-mediocre football team. As he pointed out, he doesn’t work for the Rams, he’s just one of many fed-up fans.
