AgamemnonParticipant“My passion is coaching defense the way I know how to coach defense. I wanted a four-man front, and this is where it was.”
This line, from Bill Johnson, is interesting, since Wade is a 34 guy.

Rams close to adding Joe Barry, Bill Johnson to coaching staff
By RICH HAMMOND
2017-01-14 17:13:29Sean McVay’s top priority, as the Rams’ new coach, is to complete his staff of assistants, and that process already is taking shape with moves inside and outside the organization.
The Buffalo Bills announced Saturday that they hired Mike Waufle to be their defensive line coach. Waufle had filled that role for the Rams since the start of the 2012 season.
The Rams this week agreed to terms with Wade Phillips, who is set to become their defensive coordinator, and according to published reports, McVay intends to add a couple more defensive coaches who recently became available.
Sporting News reported that the Rams intend to hire Joe Barry as their linebackers coach and assistant head coach, while NFL.com reported that the Rams intend to hire Bill Johnson to replace Waufle as defensive line coach.
The Rams have not made any of those hires official, including that of Phillips. They have announced that special teams coach John Fassel will be retained.
Barry played linebacker at USC from 1991-93 and also worked for the Trojans as a graduate assistant (1991-93) and linebackers coach (2000). Barry primarily has been an NFL linebackers coach since 2001 but on Jan. 6 he was fired after two seasons as Washington’s defensive coordinator. McVay was Washington’s offensive coordinator during that time.
Johnson has been a line coach since 1982, first for 17 years in college and then during NFL stints with Atlanta (2001-06), Denver (2007-08) and New Orleans (2009-16). The Saints announced this month that Johnson would not be retained for the 2017 season.
AgamemnonParticipantI did a search on Kromer. I got 3 or 4 pages of him being arrested and a bit on him getting into it with Cutler.
AgamemnonParticipant#Rams can definitely use Trumaine in Wade's scheme. I'm certain they'll revisit the stance on Johnson/Britt with the new staff in place. https://t.co/1ZZcLO44Z5

AgamemnonParticipantQuite often the OL coaches are also the run game coordinators (Hanifan had that role with Martz).
So he is looking for a coordinator who has input into the running game.
OC/Oline is next on my list:
1. McVay takes care of Goff. Takes care of the passing game.
The best guy to develope Goff’s potential.
2. Wade Phillips takes care of the Defense
Better than Williams.
3. Fassel takes care of Special Teams
Keeps Special Teams in the top 10.
4. Next: Offensive Line
????? Talent is OK. drop Robinson and Rhaney
5. Next: Running game
????? Talent is OK.
AgamemnonParticipantHearing the Rams have some interest in former Bears/Saints assistant Aaron Kroemer for vacant OC job. Other options have been blocked

Wes Phillips is thought of highly by new Rams HC Sean McVay, worked closely in WSH. And Wes's dad Wade is D coordinator for McVay in LA

Forrest and Tree (odd, now that I think of it)
January 13, 2017 01:59PM
Will be a great tandem in the middle, and Littleton and Grigsby played 3-4OLB in college …I think we only need middle depth .. and an Outside starter across from Quinn … easier said than done of course.

220lb LBs can work as WOLBs in a 3/4 scheme….
January 13, 2017 02:10PMIf used correctly – which I would think WPhillips WILL do….or get the right guys to fill the spots.
So, here’s a thot….I dunno defense too well – so just spitballin here…LDE – Easley/Westbrooks/Longacre/Fox?
NT – Brockers/CamThomas
RDE – Donald/Easley?
SOLB – Forrest/Longacre/Fox?
SILB – Tree/Hager
WILB – Barron/MoWilliams
WOLB – Quinn
SS – MoWilliams(I assume TJ leaves)
FS – Joyner/DavisNotes: lotsa guys may be interchangeable too…playing multiple positions in relief.
Longacre & Fox are 260lbs for SOLB along with Forrest.Heck, even TJ is almost 220lbs and is good close to the LoS if we resign him.
Mo Williams is the same weight(220lbs) as LBs Grigsby & Littleton….and might become a Shazier type.I dunno, but watching WPhillips and reading B&Gs posts makes it seem like Wade will use the talent he has…
the best way he can to get the most from the talent. I’m just lgad we have a vet DC that SM can just turn the defense over to…
so SeanM can focus on the offense.January 13, 2017 at 9:24 pm in reply to: speculation conversation…what if they switched to a 3/4 #63463

Blinkscout 3-4 Discomfort and analysis …
January 13, 2017 01:58PM
I know, from posters I trust, that this is not as violent a transition as it appears … and honestly I can only see one real issue.I have been scouting for about 7 years I think … and I have never scouted for us from a 3-4 perspective, nor have I been focusing much on 3-4 aligned players this year … and this has caught me more than a tad off guard.
So let me look at what we have when in a base 3-4 … as nickel 4-2-5 should be about the same …
NT – Brockers and Cam Thomas … this for me is the easiest transition … Brockers IMO could also play at the 5 T … There are many teams making this switch that don’t have a capable Nose on the roster. We got lucky here I think.
5T – Donald? Sims? Westbrooks? Easley? Im not sure if these 3 techs are long enough or that Sims is heavy enough. Westbrooks seems like a solid rotational guy though.
3-4 OLB – Quinn, Littleton, Grigsby … oddly Littleton and Grigsby played that spot in college so we have some depth. BUt how much of an issue will that be for Quinn? Might it help him not having to burst out of his stance as far as his back goes? Thoughts on that?
ILB – We Have Forrest and Ogletree … both played ILB in college and Tree played in a 3-4 … this may actually suit him better, both of them in fact. We need depth here, but that can be had later in the draft, IMO, or even in UDFA.
Secondary doesn’t really change … though I’m less sure we keep TJ now.
Player left out — Barron. 3-4 OLB? ILB? Box Safety again? Anyone have any ideas?
Needs … 5 tech … OLB opposite Quinn … depth at ILB.
Of course, I have not been focus tracking these positions because we ran a 4-3 and needed a DE, now that changes and Demarcus Walker is off my board, and TJ Watt jumps into his place … though I’m sure of CB at 37 now unless Wormley drops.
Guys like Ejuan Price and Ekanem and Tim Williams and the like are now in my field of vision … but I have to go back and try to find more 5 techs …
Thoughts and comments are welcome, of course, as this is mainly brainstorming and trying to convince myself that Donald will be as effective in a new system. I’m actually thinking Quinn and TRee will do better, and that Josh Forrest has a better fit in this at 6-3 255. Littleton as a situational pass rusher excites me too …
I’m going to restart my fanspeak drafts now with these positions in mind.

If you believe Donald and Quinn are athletic enough to play LB in a 34 and you don’t think that will hurt their production, then you can do a line up like this. Barron is sort of the odd man out. You have enough on the DL and you have backups there too. LBer starts to look thin.
Or, Wade coaches a 43 until we find more LBers. 😉
I guess Barron could go back to safety. Is he that much different than McDonald?

AgamemnonParticipantcan josh forrest play mike? that’s the key for me. if he can, my guess is phillips can make forrest and ogletree work. he can make it more than work.
oh wait. the key also is if quinn can play weakside linebacker. according to phillips that’s where the sack production will come from.
you listen to demarcus ware gush about wade. i think he could be great for both quinn and donald.
If you play Forrest at Mike, you don’t have a SLBer.
This thread is about speculation, so speculate. 😉

AgamemnonParticipantThat’s all true, but, Barron was small even for a 4/3 LB.
In a 3/4 he may be a flat-out liability.
WP uses a 1-gap system but then so did Williams. Even in a 4/3 with Donald drawing double teams, Barron would often just get blown out.
You still have to control the gap. You can’t do that by getting launched into the upper seats.
Yeah, Barron is small. I was surprised he held up last year. How often will the Rams be in Nickel or Dime coverage? What alignments will we use then?

Featuring one of the most respected defensive coaches in the history of the game, The 3-4 Defense: Alignments, Assignments, and Responsibilities provides an overview of several of the key factors involved in the 3-4 defensive scheme. Initially, the DVD details the advantages of a 3-4 defense, particularly when compared to a 4-3. The DVD then discusses how players are aligned in the 3-4, what assignment they’re expected to undertake, what technique they should employ, and how coaches should individualize how each defender plays according to his unique skill set. The DVD also reviews how the “Phillips 3-4 defense” is executed. Finally, the DVD explains how coaches can utilize the 3-4 to combat specific offensive strategies.
Wade says he has gone away from the traditional 3-4 LBers who take on the guards. He might use one, but the other MLB would be a move lber. He also uses a one-gap technique, not the two-gap that is the more tradional 3-4. His will lber is a chase LBer. He does use a SLBer, which maybe Forrest can fill?

Bill Callahan ‘The Best’ At Helping Offensive Lines
Posted Apr 13, 2015
Stephen Czarda Senior Writer And Content Coordinator @Redskins
As the Redskins look at increasing their offensive production in 2015, head coach Jay Gruden says the hiring of Bill Callahan will instantly help a young offensive line.
While there are many great offensive line coaches out there in the NFL, Washington Redskins head coach Jay Gruden believes he has the best one of all on his coaching staff in Bill Callahan.
During his career coaching in the NFL, 10 different linemen have earned 22 Pro Bowl appearances.
But while he’s helped players get the most out of talent from an individual standpoint, Callahan has also helped units come together to help strengthen already-strong offensive units.
As the Dallas Cowboys’ offensive coordinator and offensive line coach last season, the team finished second in the NFL with 147.1 rushing yards per game, while DeMarco Murray ran for a league- and franchise-high 1,845 yards.
Gruden said he looks forward to adding that Callahan touch to his team this season.
“Having the ability to run different type runs and get them coached up, Coach Callahan will do a great job teaching them [the offensive line] the right fundamentals, footwork and all the different combinations that are necessary in offensive line play,” Gruden said at the NFL Annual Meetings last month. “He’s the best at it. What type of runs we’re going to feature, hopefully it will be a diverse group, but we’ll be sound in what we do.”
One characteristic that stands out about Callahan-led lines and his offenses is their physicality.
As Gruden seeks to get the right players in place for a more physical rushing approach, he believes Callahan is the right man to help get the offensive linemen ready for more battles in the trenches.
“Coach Calllahan, obviously his staple is being a great line coach, a physical line coach and the running game he brings to us is more a physical, downhill approach, gap scheme-type runs that we employed some last year, but not as many as we could, and part of that is because of the type of linemen we have,” Gruden said. “We have to adjust our running game to the style we want to be, but we have to make sure we have the linemen in the building to do what we want to do.”
While the Redskins will still use the zone-running game to their advantage when situations seem fit, Callahan told Redskins.com TV’s Larry Michael that the coaches have already been working together to come up with a versatile rushing attack this offseason.

Redskins Hire Bill Callahan As Offensive Line Coach
“If you’re talking schematics and you’re talking about the power running game, the gap blocking aspects of the power running game come into play,” Callahan said. “I think what Coach [Sean] McVay has brought here and what he’s done here has been very positive. We’re trying to augment what we’re doing with the gap game – which we’re going to evolve.”What This Means For Morris
Over the last three seasons, running back Alfred Morris thrived in the Redskins’ zone-running scheme, rushing for almost 4,000 yards and 28 touchdowns during that span while also setting the franchise single-season rushing record his rookie season. So what does this shift in emphasis — particularly with Callahan’s hiring — mean for Morris?
Gruden believes the Florida Atlantic product will, like Murray, won’t skip a beat under Callahan’s tutledge.
“Well, he’s a running back, and if you’re a running back, you want to play for Coach Callahan because he likes to run the ball a lot,” Gruden said. “I think Alfred will be happy. There will be some different styles of runs for him, so for the most part, Alfred’s got great vision and did a great job protecting the football last year, so I think Alfred will be happy with some of the changes.”
