Rams coach Sean McVay told reporters in Green Bay after the game that he is “definitely optimistic” Aaron Donald will be available to him by Week 1. He also said he is “optimistic about the direction that we’re going, and the level of urgency that both sides have.” That’s as strong as McVay has been about Donald since basically the start of training camp. Rams GM Les Snead has said Donald would probably have to be at that first practice this coming week to be available for Week 1.

AgamemnonParticipantBrowns deal OL Erving to Chiefs for 5th … Cleveland has traded C/T Cameron Erving, the Browns’ first-round pick in 2015, to Kansas City for a 5th round pick in 2018. An All-American OT in college at Florida State, Erving was the Browns’ starting centre last fall, but apperaed to be ticketed for a backup role this season. With the new pick, the Browns currently holds 13 selections in the 2018 draft, the most in the league; indeed, San Francisco (with 10) is the only other team in double figures.

AgamemnonParticipantBonsignore: Hey Aaron Donald, the Rams aren’t budging, it’s time to get back to work
By Vincent Bonsignore | vbonsignore@scng.com | Daily News
PUBLISHED: August 30, 2017 at 12:32 pm | UPDATED: August 30, 2017 at 1:02 pmAaron Donald deserves to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
So let’s just get that out of the way at the very top, lest anyone thinks sides are being taken in a contract holdout that has cost Donald all of training camp and preseason. And if he doesn’t report in the next day or so, it likely will mean sitting out at least the Rams’ season opener Sept. 10 against the Indianapolis Colts.
Repeat: Aaron Donald deserves to be the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
Have we cleared that up?
Good.
Let’s make something else clear: It’s time for Donald to end his contract holdout and get back to Los Angeles.
Preferably by Friday. But absolutely in time for Donald to be available when the Rams open the season at the Coliseum.
He’s taken his stand far enough by holding out. Made his point loud and clear.
Up until now, we’ve all just sort of stood off to the side and nodded in agreement. Of course Donald needs to be compensated as one of the best players in the NFL. And if it means him sitting out some voluntary offseason practices and skipping the grind of training camp and not suiting up for some meaningless preseason games nobody pays much attention to, so be it.
Nothing was being lost, tangibly, other than time and preparation.
If it meant the Rams standing up and taking notice and ultimately doing right by Donald as a result, that’s something we can all get behind.
Thing is, the Rams got that point a long time ago.
And while they won’t say so publicly, there is a strong sense they’ve made it clear they are open to making Donald the highest-paid defensive player in the league relative to annual average salary while guaranteeing him a life-changing amount of money.
If you’re doing the math at home, that means Donald making $70 million in guaranteed money and, should he play out the length of the deal, pocket $118 million or so.
For point of reference, think somewhere above Ndamukong Suh’s six-year, $114.4 million deal that guarantees him $60 million, and Von Miller’s six-year, $114 million contract that guarantees him $70 million.
That’s an incredibly fair offer given that Donald has two years remaining on his original rookie deal and that, frankly, with the Rams controlling him for at least the next four years they aren’t obligated to do anything.
But they understand Donald has massively outplayed his rookie contract, and the $8.7 million he has coming to him over the next two seasons is almost an insult relative to his talent, his standing among his peers and the impact me makes for the team.
Which is why they are willing to tear that contract up and renegotiate a new one that reflects the Hall of Fame caliber player they were so fortunate to draft with the 13th pick in 2014.
What they won’t do – and frankly, shouldn’t – is appease all of Donald’s demands and desires.
Not with two years left on his deal and them having him under control through at least the 2020 season.
Sorry, it doesn’t work that way.
If Donald wants all those boxes checked off he needs to return to work, play out his original deal, then go into free agency and pit all 32 teams against one another for his services.
If, at that point, someone is willing to give him the sun and the moon and Venus and Saturn and Jupiter, more power to him.
An open, free market can be a beautiful thing.
But he isn’t on the open market and, from a contractual standpoint, he most assuredly isn’t free.
The Rams have no reason to budge from their present offer as a result.
And they won’t.
They hold all the leverage.
Donald essentially is just spinning his wheels at this point.
He obviously believes he’s worth X Y and Z over Miller and Suh.
The Rams believe he is worth A B and C over them.
Donald and his people likely want contractual flexibility so that, if the league salary cap spikes in the next few years he can renegotiate a new deal that takes into account the higher cap sooner rather than later.
With the Rams re-doing Donald’s contract two years before they technically have to, you can bet their desire is to lock him up for the next six years.
Period.
No loopholes. No out clauses. No free pass in which Donald can come knocking again in three years seeking a new deal.
“That would be horrible if they gave into that,” a high-ranking team executive told me. “It would be a terrible precedent to set.”
Not that we all don’t understand Donald’s thinking, of course.
If any one of us were given a bat and a batter’s box to hit from we’d swing as hard as we could for the very same things.
But Donald hasn’t played long enough to reach that batter’s box. He might not even be in the on-deck circle yet, for that matter.
Given all the dynamics and circumstance, the stand he took was never really strong enough to get him quite as far as he wanted.
There was always a finish line, and the Rams controlled it.
They’ve been holding it out in front of him for awhile.
And it will make him the highest-paid defensive player in the NFL.
Donald apparently wants more. But he won’t get what he’s demanding by holding out. The Rams have no reason to budge.
Donald needs to either take the offer on the table or double down on himself by playing out the last two years of his contract to earn free agency.
Whichever option he chooses, he needs to get back to Los Angeles ASAP.
Because if it goes on much longer, he won’t just be hurting himself. There are 52 other players on the roster counting on him and a critically important season looming ahead.
It’s time for Donald to get back to work.

AgamemnonParticipant“Look how quick Mannion gets the ball out.”
I’ve always seen that. It is true his delivery has a quirk in it, as some say. But it has never kept him from getting the ball out quick.
Mannion works on stuff. I think of him like I did Long and Laurinaitis. A player who will make himself a good player whether he gets coaching or not. Mannion used to throw some balls high because of bad mechanics and footwork. Evidently he has fixed that. I know Mannion can throw a tight spiral. And none of this takes anything away from Goff.
.
Mannion will throw to the deeper guy more often than ?most Qbs. Anyway he is willing to take a shot.-

AgamemnonParticipantThe Bad
16) Cooper’s gator arms when Jatavis Brown was about to light him up.
I thought Cooper made some good tuff catches. I will have to find that play.
20) Mannion staring down receivers. He’s a backup. He’s not a bad backup … but if he stares down receivers in the regular season should something happen to Goff it’s going to be pick 6 city.
Staring down WRs is getting to be a pet peeve of mine. I don’t see it. I see Mannion going with his first read. I see him throwing into tighter windows, but that is ok. Nothing wrong with that. I don’t see a slow release. It seems no better or worse than any other QB. He has moved in the pocket and made plays.
.
Watch the second half of the SD game and listen to Fouts comment on Mannion’s play.
“Look how quick Mannion gets the ball out.”
“Good timing… throwing before the WR makes his break.”
“Another perfect pass.”I like his stuff, alyoshamucci. But I will have to go with what I see.

Linebacker Andy Mulumba had the Rams lone sack. It was the Rams only QB hit of the night.
— Joe Curley (@vcsjoecurley) August 27, 2017
If he doesn’t play next week vs. Green Bay, Jared Goff will finish the preseason 24 of 32 for 250 yards with 1 TD and 1 int. @CVRamsClub
— Joe Curley (@vcsjoecurley) August 27, 2017
The Rams actually outgained (327-326) and had more first downs (23-17) than the Chargers last night.
— Joe Curley (@vcsjoecurley) August 27, 2017
AgamemnonParticipantThe sack is on Havenstein. But, still, Goff had right at 3 seconds to get rid of the ball or step up into a clean pocket and eliminate the sack altogether.
Yeah, Goff’s eyes were focused downfield as they should be but he needs to develop that timer in his head that tells him to get rid of the ball.
Brown had a screw up too. But besides that I thought the offensive line played ok to good.
AgamemnonParticipant
AgamemnonParticipant* Mannion is a #2, but we don’t know how good. So far he has performed well in the 2nd string role, with 2nd and 3rd string OL, WRs, and backs. That doesn’t tell you that much. He has quirks in his physical game but isn’t hindered by them; actually he gets the ball out fairly quickly all things considered. Just guessing, I personally think he’s a good #2 with enough there that he could be #1 if put in those circumstances.
* Goff has done well overall, with some minor down moments, but nothing that concerns me. The contrast with Rivers was sharp–as well as he;’s doing, he’s still not a fully formed franchise qb yet. But I don’t have any reason to doubt he will become that. If you add up all his snaps, it pretty much amounts to a single regular season game.
In that imagined game, he would be 24 of 32 (75%) for 250 yards and 7.8 per attempt, with 1 TD (3.125%)and 1 INT & a qb rating of 95.5. Where would that qb rank against the 16 game rankings of 2016 starters? (That;s not a projection of what he will do, it just gives you a rough sense of where he stands). He would be 1st in completion percentage, 5th in yards per attempt, 17th in yards per game, 25th in TD percentage, and 11th in qb rating (ahead of Roethlisberger, Stafford, Wilson, Rivers, Palmer, Flacco, and Eli).
With Mannion he played the equivalent of 2 regular season games. Mannion would be 49 of 76 (64.5%) for 490 yards and 6.4 per attempt, with 2 TDs (2.6%) and O Ints and a qb rating of 91.4. Where would that qb rank against the 16 game rankings of 2016 starters? He would be 14th in completion percentage, 27th in yards per attempt, 18th in yards per game, 30th in TD percentage, and 16th in qb rating (ahead of Rivers, Palmer, Flacco, and Eli).
Goff is still a work in progress, he’s the starter, he will probably have his ups and downs, Mannion could be a good #2, and they ain’t trading him.
…
I agree with that, zn. Although I think Mannion will be a better No. 1 than Goff.
.
Mannion was 7 of 12 for 51 yards in the first half, not great. But, those 2 drives resulted in 2 FGs. One was when they got the ball with less than a minute left until half time.
.
Even though it was in games against scrubs in preseason, he did come from behind to beat Dallas last year and the Raiders this year and except for a missed FG, the Chargers this year.-

Preseason Week 3 Preview: Chargers at Rams
By PFF Analysis Team • Aug 26, 2017Preseason Week 3 continues with the Los Angeles Chargers at the Los Angeles Rams. The third week of the preseason is generally considered a “dress rehearsal” for the NFL season, and starting positions and important roles can be won and lost this week. PFF’s analysts have all the important position battles and players to watch for each team below:
Players to Watch:
Offensive Line– The Rams offensive line has been a sieve for quite some time, but with some new coaching and free agent additions, the Rams offensive line sits at second in pass-blocking efficiency through the preseason with an 87.8. Their 12 quarterback pressures allowed are tied for third fewest and are six fewer than they had given up through two games of the 2016 preseason, not to mention they’ve seen 16 more pass blocking opportunities.
Blake Countess, S– Second-year safety Blake Countess was the highest graded Rams player in week three of the preseason and fourth highest graded safety of the week with an overall grade of 88.1. His coverage grade was even more impressive with an 89.5, which he earned by allowing only two receptions on his four targets for 11 yards and two passes defended for a passer rating of 56.3 when throwing into his coverage.
Omarius Bryant, DI– Bryant’s 80.7 pass rush grade was the highest by a Rams defender in their game against the Raiders. Through two preseason games, Bryant has generated three quarterback hits and one quarterback hurry on 13 pass rushing snaps. His three quarterback hits are second most among interior defenders this preseason and is tied with fellow rookie Tanzel Smart for the team lead in quarterback pressures this preseason. This isn’t the entire article.
