EARTH CITY, Mo. — Despite fears to the contrary, the St. Louis Rams got some good news when it comes to defensive end Chris Long’s injured right knee Monday afternoon.

According to Rams coach Jeff Fisher, Long is dealing with a hyperextended knee but managed to avoid any ligament damage after suffering the injury in Sunday’s 24-10 loss to the Green Bay Packers.

“We got good news,” Fisher said. “It’s not an ACL or MCL, so that’s good. We feared the worst last night. We don’t know if he’s going to be available this week [or] for a couple of weeks. So we’ll just kind of go week to week on him.”

That’s particularly good news for the Rams as they enter their bye week, meaning Long will have an additional week to recover without missing an extra game.

Long suffered the injury with 4:10 left in the second quarter of Sunday’s game and did not return. William Hayes replaced him at left end.

Long missed 10 games in 2014 with a foot/ankle injury that landed him on the injured reserve/designated to return list.

While Fisher declined to put a specific timetable on Long’s return this time, he intimated that it would be a few weeks or so.

“It’s technically a hyperextension but there’s some pain things he has to deal with over the next few weeks,” Fisher said.
