McVay says the Rams are “sticking with the plan” on LB Mark Barron. He’ll participate in a scrimmage Tuesday, but won’t plan in a preseason game. “Goal for him is to be good to go Sept. 10”
Only two injury issues from Houston game. McVay says OLB Ryan Davis (ankle) suffered a mid-level sprain and may be out a “a week or two.” Ethan Westbrooks (shoulder) “checked out good.”

McVay said Rams would prefer to have Aaron Donald back by the end of this week in order to play him in week 1, but he had no update beyond that.
First, McVay said ideally, Aaron Donald would get 1 1/2 or 2 weeks of preparation before game action. Then he said, “by the end of this week.” I’m strictly giving my opinion here, but I think if Aaron got in the building on Sept. 3, there’s no question he would play.

The Rams have reason for concern with their backup QB situation after Sean Mannion got off to another slow start on Saturday against the Texans. Mannion threw four incomplete passes and an interception before he mustered a turnaround. He finished 11-of-17 for 68 yards and a touchdown, with an interception, in the first half. McVay said after the game that Mannion responded well to adversity, but that they needed to find a way to “start sharp right from the beginning.” Mannion played poorly in a preseason opener against the Ravens, but showed improvement against the Raiders. He’ll likely play the first half against the Saints to close out the preseason.
Rams backup RB John Kelly continued his impressive preseason showing on Saturday against the Texans. The sixth-round pick from Tennessee rushed for 64 yards and two touchdowns in 15 carries. “Good runner, good, confident player,” Sean McVay said. “Just good play energy where he kind of brings guys around him where guys get excited playing with him.” Kelly took a handoff from Mannion and rushed 15 yards up the middle for a touchdown in the third quarter. “I just want to make sure that whenever I’ve got to go out there and execute a play, I’m going to do what I’m supposed to do,” Kelly said.
