Donald and Ramsey are taking Phillips’ departure in stride.
“He was great,” Donald said. “Everybody knows he’s been doing it a long time with a lot of success and coached a lot of great players.
“He’s a guy that helped our defense to do a lot of great things, helped us as individual players to have success, so he put us in great positions. He’s definitely a guy you’re going to miss.
“Just a part of the business. It sucks, but just got to understand it’s a business.”
Donald and Ramsey said McVay reached out to them when Staley was hired.
“I know just talking to Coach, and hearing his mindset, what he’s going to bring,” Donald said. “I’m excited to see.”

Donald has talked to Staley already and spoke with Sean McVay when the hire was made, and he’s excited about the ideas he’s going to bring to the defense.
“I talked to him a little, not that much yet,” Donald told Rams Wire on Friday. “I talked to McVay a little bit about it. I’m excited from just talking to him to see what he’s going to bring to the defense and the things he’s going to do to free certain guys up to go out there and try to have success so we can win games. Part of this league is change and I’m just excited to see what he brings and what he can do.”
…
Donald is thankful to have had the chance to play for Phillips, and he’s going to miss the legendary defensive coordinator in Los Angeles.
“He’s a great coach. Learned a lot from him, he’s been coaching for a long time and having success,” Donald said. “Having an opportunity to play for him was great, we’re going to miss the swagger and the confidence he brought to the defense. He gave us a lot of opportunities to do a lot of different things and to be a successful defense, so definitely going to miss him.”

Here’s a weird fact. Rams’ team that won only 1 SB (by an inch btw) and lost to Pats in 2001 now has 5 players off it in the Hall while NE dynasty that won 3 SBs in 4 years has only one., Ty Law.==

Super Bowl LIV’s nearly upon us, but 30 teams already have begun the effort to reach Tampa a year from now for Super Bowl LV. @greggrosenthal supplies one thing each NFC team can do to supplant the 49ers as conference champions.LOS ANGELES RAMS: Hope that Brandon Staley is the next Sean McVay.
I have more faith than most that McVay will come up with some counter moves to resuscitate the Rams’ offense, even with plenty of offensive line questions hanging over the team. The bigger X-factor for L.A.’s 2020 season is new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley. If you haven’t heard of him, you are not alone. Staley was coaching in Division III only three years ago, before learning under Vic Fangio. At 37, Staley is actually three years older than his new boss. But they have a lot of similarities, considering their meteoric career climbs and the awed tones they engender at every stop, including during the interview process. Staley’s first NFL coordinator gig doesn’t figure to be easy because the Rams’ defense could be in transition, with key starters Cory Littleton, Michael Brockers and Dante Fowler Jr. all headed to free agency and safety Eric Weddle’s future uncertain. In Staley, McVay hopes to have found a jolt of energy and schematic advantage like he himself brought the team’s offense back in 2017.

February 3, 2020 at 10:15 am #110925znModeratorfrom 2020 NFL Power Rankings: Way-too-early 1-32 offseason poll
Our power panel — a group of more than 80 writers, editors and TV personalities — evaluated how teams stack up throughout the season.
13. Los Angeles Rams
2019 record: 9-7
Reason for optimism: Sean McVay’s willingness to adapt — even if it means hiring unproven coaches. The Rams finished 9-7 in 2019 and were the only team with a winning record to miss the playoffs. Following the season, McVay could have remained content knowing his team was only a couple of plays away from earning a postseason berth. However, McVay made a bold move in not renewing defensive coordinator Wade Phillips’ contract, replacing him with newcomer Brandon Staley. He also demonstrated that he is not too proud to bring in extra help on offense in his hiring of offensive coordinator Kevin O’Connell, who fills a position that’s been vacant the past two seasons. — Lindsey Thiry

LOS ANGELES RAMS: OFFENSIVE LINEMEN THAT CAN GET THE RAMS’ LINE BACK TO ITS 2018 FORM
Secondary needs: edge defender, linebackerThe Rams’ offensive line was one of the better units in the league in 2018, and their offense flourished behind it as a result. That all fell apart this past season, with injuries and personnel changes taking a toll on the group. They finished the season 31st in PFF’s offensive line rankings, and now, the most consistent player from the line — Andrew Whitworth — is set to be a free agent at 38 years old. There isn’t a position on the line that the Rams can’t look to improve on in 2020.
They should also look to add some new pieces defensively. Edge defender becomes an area of need with the impending free agency of Dante Fowler Jr., but even if the Rams retain him, they can look to improve the other starting edge slot over Clay Matthews (54.2 overall grade in 2019) and Samson Ebukam (66.7). At linebacker, the Rams should make every effort to re-sign Cory Littleton. Since 2018, his coverage grade of 90.1 trails only Lavonte David and Luke Kuechly among linebackers with 1,000 or more defensive snaps.

Idea that you can’t pay a top QB and be a Super Bowl contender is folly. Smart teams do it all the time.Roughly 50% of NFL rosters are on rookie contracts, making +/- $1 million. The idea a team can’t afford elite contracts for QB, other top players is ridiculous.

Some folks have asked about the trip to China the Rams had scheduled with Taylor Rapp this month. That trip is not taking place now, over concerns about the coronavirus. It could happen at some point, but nothing scheduled at this timFebruary 4, 2020 at 8:24 pm #110970znModeratorFYI: #Rams C Austin Blythe underwent successful clean-up surgery on both shoulders this week. Blythe played through a nagging ankle injury throughout season & made a successful transition from G to C at the midway point to help solidify a Rams o-line that finished season strong.
