Just stumbled across 2 independent articles saying the same thing:

Football programs are being cancelled at 2 major universities known for hoops: KY and VA.

Think about that. Cancelling their football programs.

One can only imagine that these decisions reflect financial pressures on higher education. Colleges and universities at all levels need to notice the implications, not just for sports programs.

It also seems significant to me that football teams are being rolled up at universities closely linked with the state identity. I cannot help but see this as at least a loosening of football’s grip on college sports and the sporting population that supports them. One thinks of various factors: looming dangers of lawsuits over head injuries, the rise of soccer, etc.

Obviously, by themselves, these 2 cases don’t mean that much. But I can only imagine that they won’t be the last. How many more futile years will Indiana put in on the gridiron? Northwestern has occasionally done rather well, but its heart is not in football. Knowledgeable folks could probably name schools in this situation from every conference.

How about the mid-major conferences? How long will Ball State or Kent State or Ohio U keep plugging away at football? In IL, Northern does well, but Southern? Ill. State? Eastern?

I dunno. You may call me silly silly, but I sense an ominous undertone here.

By virtue of the absurd ...
